SAXS investigation on aggregation phenomena in supercritical CO2.

2004

Synchrotron Small-Angle X-Ray scattering (SAXS) measurements on aggregate formation of a Polyvinyl acetate- b-Perfluoro octyl acrylate (PVAc- b-PFOA) block copolymer in supercritical CO(2) are here reported. Experiments were carried out for a series of different thermodynamic conditions, changing the solvent density by profiling both the pressure at constant temperature and the temperature at constant pressure. This block copolymer and in general fluorocarbon-hydrocarbon di-blocks form aggregates depending on the value of CO(2) density. A sharp transition between monomers dissolved as random coils and micelles characterized by a solvophilic shell and a solvophobic core occurs when the CO(2)…

Identification of effective parameters for anti-inflammatory concentration in València City's wastewater using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative anal…

2019

The current literature about pharmaceutical and personal care compounds (PPCPs) focuses on identifying their concentration and toxicological risk both in surface water and in wastewater. However, the influence of urban areas (population ageing, income level, hospitals and others) has not yet been analysed. Knowing how a population (and its facilities) affects PPCPs' presence in wastewater is important to identify the conditions that are responsible for their presence. In this work, the influence of water consumption, population ageing, income level, hospitals and nursing homes on the anti-inflammatory concentration have been analysed. To fill the gap between the quantitative data on PPCPs' …

Light-induced anomalous Hall effect in massless Dirac fermion systems and topological insulators with dissipation

2019

Employing the quantum Liouville equation with phenomenological dissipation, we investigate the transport properties of massless and massive Dirac fermion systems that mimics graphene and topological insulators, respectively. The massless Dirac fermion system does not show an intrinsic Hall effect, but it shows a Hall current under the presence of circularly-polarized laser fields as a nature of a optically-driven nonequilibrium state. Based on the microscopic analysis, we find that the light-induced Hall effect mainly originates from the imbalance of photocarrier distribution in momentum space although the emergent Floquet–Berry curvature also has a non-zero contribution. We further compute…

Blood absorption capacity of different xenograft bone substitutes. An in-vitro study

2019

Background Commercially available xenograft blocks, claim to have adequate characteristics to interact with biological media and thus permitting biological fluid absorption. The objective of this in vitro study was to compare the blood absorption capacity of four different xenograft block materials of different composition of collagen and porosity. Material and Methods Four brands of xenograft block materials were used (NuOss®, Bio-Oss®, Osteobiol® and Smartbone®). Five samples of each brand were analyzed, making a total of 20 tests. Human blood was used as the absorption liquid for the present experiment. The time period, in which the block remains in contact with the blood, was registered…

Pore structure and water transfer in Pietra d’Aspra limestone: A neutronographic study

2020

Neutron radiography (NR) was here applied to study the effects of two different commercially available consolidants on the water absorption properties in a particular type of limestone (biocalcarenite), known as Pietra d’Aspra stone, which is one of the most extensively used lithotypes in Sicilian Baroque buildings. Our attention was mainly focused on the evaluation, using a fast and nondestructive visualization of water motion through capillarity, of the effectiveness of such layers as consolidating agents in view of preserving and maintaining both old and modern structures. The biocalcarenite was treated with nanosilica (Nano Estel®) and nanolime (CaLoSil®) by brushing it until full satur…

β-Glucans and Post Prandial Satiety: The Role of Intestinal Hormones in Healthy Volunteers

2016

Recent interest in intestinal hormones has risen with the idea that they modulate glucose tolerance and food intake through a variety of mechanisms, and such hormones like peptide YY (PYY), ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-1 and 2, and cholecystokinin (CKK) are therefore excellent therapeutic candidates for the treatment of diabetes and obesity. Furthermore, in the recent years, multiple studies suggest that the microbiota is critically important for normal host functions, while impaired host microbiota interactions contribute to the pathogenesis of numerous common metabolic disorders. In this study, we considered the nutraceutical effects of β-glucans added to pasta at the con…

Hydrothermal Synthesis of ZnO Crystals from Zn(OH)2 Metastable Phases at Room to Supercritical Conditions

2014

The originality of this work is to highlight the effect of temperature and pressure on the size and morphology of hydrothermal ZnO particles from ambient to supercritical conditions (T > 374 °C and P > 221 bar) using a unique continuous one-step process. Experiments were carried out from zinc nitrate (Zn(NO3)2) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) solutions in the ranges of 1–300 bar and 30–400 °C. The as-prepared particles of ZnO (flower, ellipsoid, and sphere) and e-Zn(OH)2 (polyhedral) sized from nano to micrometers were characterized by X-ray diffraction and electronic microscopy. The wulfingite phase (e-Zn(OH)2) was detected inside some powders especially at room temperature for higher pressu…

Generalised power series solutions of sub-analytic differential equations

2006

Abstract We show that if a solution y ( x ) of a sub-analytic differential equation admits an asymptotic expansion ∑ i = 1 ∞ c i x μ i , μ i ∈ R + , then the exponents μ i belong to a finitely generated semi-group of R + . We deduce a similar result for the components of non-oscillating trajectories of real analytic vector fields in dimension n. To cite this article: M. Matusinski, J.-P. Rolin, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 342 (2006).

Feasibility of D-D start-up under realistic technological assumptions for EU-DEMO

2021

Abstract One of the main issues in view of the realization of a DEMOnstration fusion reactor is the availability of a sufficient external supply of tritium (T) to start operation. T is an unstable nuclide, which is almost absent in nature and is currently available as by-product in e.g. CANDU, whose operation in the next decades (both in terms of life extension of existing reactors and construction of new ones) is at the moment under debate. During DEMO operation, T will be generated on-site by breeding blanket, employing the neutrons originating from D-T reaction. However, it is considered that a certain initial amount of T is needed to start operation, the so-called start-up inventory. An…

2019

The paper presents the design activities and testing plan of a vertical target mock-up, developed within the pre-conceptual design phase for DEMO Work Package DIV-1 “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” - EUROfusion Power Plant Physics & Technology (PPPT) program. Activities concerning the Divertor Outboard Vertical Target cooling mock-up are presented in term of CAD model, thermal-hydraulic numerical simulation, structural analysis, structural integrity verification and manufacturing procedure. Moreover, the mechanical dimensions of support systems for Plasma Facing Components (PFCs), manifold and diffuser have been analyzed in detail, in order to avoid structural fault during the tes…
