Accumulation and self-organization in hydrofracturetransport of fluids

2003

Abstract Propagation of “mobile hydrofractures” is one of several mechanisms to transport fluids. Analogue experiments show howthis transport mechanism is intimately linked with accumulation, by stepwise mergers of fluid batches. Analogue experiments and numerical modelling indicate that such stepwise transport and accumulation may lead to the establishment of a self-organised critical state.

Verbal fluency in school-aged Spanish children: analysis of clustering and switching organizational strategies, employing different semantic categori…

2021

Imbalance between sympathetic and sensory innervation in peritoneal endometriosis

2011

To investigate possible mechanisms of pain pathophysiology in patients with peritoneal endometriosis, a clinical study on sensory and sympathetic nerve fibre sprouting in endometriosis was performed. Peritoneal lesions (n= 40) and healthy peritoneum (n= 12) were immunostained and analysed with anti-protein gene product 9.5 (PGP 9.5), anti-substance P (SP) and anti-tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), specific markers for intact nerve fibres, sensory nerve fibres and sympathetic nerve fibres, respectively, to identify the ratio of sympathetic and sensory nerve fibres. In addition, immune cell infiltrates in peritoneal endometriotic lesions were analysed and the nerve growth factor (NGF) and interleuki…

NELLA “REVISIONE INFINITA” DEL PROCESSO CONTRADA I NODI IRRISOLTI DELL’ESECUZIONE DELLE SENTENZE CEDU E DEL CONCORSO ESTERNO NEL REATO ASSOCIATIVO

2016

The rejection of the request for revision of the Contrada trial once again focuses attention on the issues of legal certainty/foreseeability of “external participation in criminal association” cases and the execution of judgements by the ECHR. Retracing the debate in the field we find su…

Dissection of C1q Capability of Interacting with IgG

1997

Abstract C1q-bearing immune complexes have been observed in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and human immunodeficiency virus infection-associated neuropathy. For the purpose of understanding better the phenomenon of C1q-bearing immune complexes, we investigated the constancy of the C1q-IgG interaction. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed in which wells were coated with IgG to mimic antigen-complexed IgG. Serial dilutions of C1q were applied for distinct time intervals, and bound C1q was detected either directly or after exposure to one of several elution buffers. Our results show that a part of C1q attached to IgG forms a tight association that is not reversible under t…

A new approach to fuzzy sets: Application to the design of nonlinear time series, symmetry-breaking patterns, and non-sinusoidal limit-cycle oscillat…

2019

Abstract It is shown that characteristic functions of sets can be made fuzzy by means of the B κ -function, recently introduced by the author, where the fuzziness parameter κ ∈ R controls how much a fuzzy set deviates from the crisp set obtained in the limit κ → 0. As applications, we present first a general expression for a switching function that may be of interest in electrical engineering and in the design of nonlinear time series. We then introduce another general expression that allows wallpaper and frieze patterns for every possible planar symmetry group (besides patterns typical of quasicrystals) to be designed. We show how the fuzziness parameter κ plays an analogous role to temper…

Explicit Granger causality in kernel Hilbert spaces

2020

Granger causality (GC) is undoubtedly the most widely used method to infer cause-effect relations from observational time series. Several nonlinear alternatives to GC have been proposed based on kernel methods. We generalize kernel Granger causality by considering the variables cross-relations explicitly in Hilbert spaces. The framework is shown to generalize the linear and kernel GC methods, and comes with tighter bounds of performance based on Rademacher complexity. We successfully evaluate its performance in standard dynamical systems, as well as to identify the arrow of time in coupled R\"ossler systems, and is exploited to disclose the El Ni\~no-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon f…

Segmentation algorithm for non-stationary compound Poisson processes

2010

We introduce an algorithm for the segmentation of a class of regime switching processes. The segmentation algorithm is a non parametric statistical method able to identify the regimes (patches) of a time series. The process is composed of consecutive patches of variable length. In each patch the process is described by a stationary compound Poisson process, i.e. a Poisson process where each count is associated with a fluctuating signal. The parameters of the process are different in each patch and therefore the time series is non-stationary. Our method is a generalization of the algorithm introduced by Bernaola-Galván, et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 168105 (2001)]. We show that the new algori…

Genomic characterization of a novel group A lamb rotavirus isolated in Zaragoza, Spain.

2008

An ovine rotavirus (OVR) strain, 762, was isolated from a 30-day-old lamb affected with severe gastroenteritis, in Zaragoza, Spain, and the VP4, VP7, VP6, NSP4, and NSP5/NSP6 genes were subsequently characterized molecularly. Strain OVR762 was classified as a P[14] rotavirus, as the VP4 and VP8* trypsin-cleavage product of the VP4 protein revealed the highest amino acid (aa) identity (94% and 97%, respectively) with that of the P11[14] human rotavirus (HRV) strain PA169, isolated in Italy. Analysis of the VP7 gene product revealed that OVR762 possessed G8 serotype specificity, a type common in ruminants, with the highest degree of aa identity (95–98%) shared with serotype G8 HRV, bovine rot…
