We have investigated the vortex core transition in 3He-B by measuring the associated changes in mutual friction dissipation within the superfluid. If rotation is continuously stopped and restarted while cooling or warming then the transition occurs at a clearly defined temperature, but temperature sweeps during continuous rotation show substantial supercooling and superheating. Moreover, the high temperature vortex shows a continuum of metastable states when supercooled to a constant, arbitrary low temperature, the mutual friction dissipaton depending on the temperature at which rotation was started. Spatial development of multiple-gap states in nonequilibrium superconductors

We have studied the gap instability in a superconductor under tunneling injection at high voltages by probing the spatial distribution of the phonon emission. A high sensitivity was achieved by using the fountain pressure of superfluid helium for detecting the phonons. Spatial structures were observed at gap depressions as small as 2%. From their spatial development we find that the quasiparticles diffuse into regions where their density is higher.
Charge-Induced Deformation of the 4He Solid-Superfluid Interface

The interface between solid and superfluid 4He has revealed unusual dynamic properties. Characteristic of this quantum system are the very high thermal conductivity of the superfluid phase, and an extremely small heat of fusion below temperatures of about 1 K. As a result, equilibrium at the solid-superfluid 4He interface is established quite rapidly, which gives rise, e.g., to melting — crystallization waves [1,2] — similar in appearance to surface waves on a free liquid surface — and to anomalous transmission of sound [3].
Time-domain analysis of electronic spectra in superfluid 4He

Abstract Electronic absorption spectra of impurities in superfluid helium is developed in time domain, using time-dependent density functional theory to describe liquid 4 He and time-dependent perturbation theory to describe the electronic degrees of freedom of the impurity. Angularly isotropic potentials are used to describe the molecule–helium interactions in the ground and excited electronic states. The calculations rationalize experimentally observed phonon side-bands in 4 He droplets and in bulk helium, and allow assignments of spectral features to specific motions of the liquid.

Susceptibility of contrail ice crystal numbers to aircraft soot particle emissions

We develop an idealized, physically-based model describing combined effects of ice nucleation and sublimation on ice crystal number during persistent contrail formation. Our study represents the first effort to predict ice numbers at the point where contrails transition into contrail cirrus—several minutes past formation—by connecting them to aircraft soot particle emissions and atmospheric supersaturation with respect to ice. Results averaged over an observed exponential distribution of ice supersaturation (mean value 15%) indicate that large reductions in soot particle numbers are needed to lower contrail ice crystal numbers significantly for soot emission indices around 1015 (kg-fuel)−1,…

The electrochemical conversion of dichloroacetic acid to chloracetic acid is investigated in conventional cells and in microreactors. Two different microreactors are used: the first is a filter press cell equipped with PTFE micrometric spacers, easy to assemble and disassemble and available for a large variety of electrodes and solvents; the second is made using an adhesive spacer, micromilling and press and could easily be developed on an industrial scale. The electrochemical synthesis is performed successfully in the microreactors equipped with a graphite cathode under proper operative conditions. Toward a density functional description of liquid pH2.

A finite-temperature density functional approach to describe the properties of parahydrogen in the liquid-vapor coexistence region is presented. The first proposed functional is zero-range, where the density-gradient term is adjusted so as to reproduce the surface tension of the liquid-vapor interface at low temperature. The second functional is finite-range and, while it is fitted to reproduce bulk pH2 properties only, it is shown to yield surface properties in good agreement with experiments.
