Dispersive interactions between atoms and nonplanar surfaces

We calculate the dispersive force between a ground state atom and a non planar surface. We present explicit results for a corrugated surface, derived from the scattering approach at first order in the corrugation amplitude. A variety of analytical results are derived in different limiting cases, including the van der Waals and Casimir-Polder regimes. We compute numerically the exact first-order dispersive potential for arbitrary separation distances and corrugation wavelengths, for a Rubidium atom on top of a silicon or gold corrugated surface. A mesoscopic mechanical model of the surface tension and some simulation results

Abstract Drops of mercury do not spread on a surface. A metal paper clip can float on water. These phenomena are macroscopic manifestations of molecular interactions and can be explained in terms of surface tension. In this study, we discuss a simple mesoscopic mechanical model of the surface tension and the results of numerical fluid dynamics simulations implemented on the basis of it. We study the droplet formation without and with gravity when it can drop from a narrow hole like a trickling tap and finally the behaviour of free surface liquid in a vessel. Comparison of laboratory-scale thermophilic biofilm and activated sludge processes integrated with a mesophilic activated sludge process

A combined thermophilic-mesophilic wastewater treatment was studied using a laboratory-scale thermophilic activated sludge process (ASP) followed by mesophilic ASP or a thermophilic suspended carrier biofilm process (SCBP) followed by mesophilic ASP, both systems treating diluted molasses (dilution factor 1:500 corresponding GF/A-filtered COD (COD(filt)) of 1900+/-190 mgl(-1)). With hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 12-18 h the thermophilic ASP and thermophilic SCBP removed 60+/-13% and 62+/-7% of COD(filt), respectively, with HRT of 8 h the removals were 48+/-1% and 69+/-4%. Instant labeling of therapeutic cells for multimodality imaging

Autologous therapeutic cells are typically harvested and transplanted in one single surgery. This makes it impossible to label them with imaging biomarkers through classical transfection techniques in a laboratory. To solve this problem, we developed a novel microfluidic device, which provides highly efficient labeling of therapeutic cells with imaging biomarkers through mechanoporation. Alteration of anion gap during almost total plasma replacement with synthetic colloids in piglets

In ten piglets (body weight 8.2-11.6 kg), acid base, electrolyte and anion gap changes were investigated during almost total plasma replacement with hydroxyethyl starch (HES) and modified fluid gelatin (GEL) in saline solution using a cell saver autotransfusion technique. During the study, there were only moderate acid base changes, but marked disturbances in anion balance. At study end, the mean chloride concentration was significantly higher (mmol/l: normal values 97-108, HES 116 +/- 1.5, GEL 108 +/- 1.1, p0.01) and the mean anion gap was significantly lower in the HES group in comparison to the GEL group (mmol/l: normal values 5-14, HES 3 +/- 1.7, GEL 11.9 +/- 0.9, p0.01). Sympathetic cooling of a trapped proton mediated by an LC circuit

Efficient cooling of trapped charged particles is essential to many fundamental physics experiments1,2, to high-precision metrology3,4 and to quantum technology5,6. Until now, sympathetic cooling has required close-range Coulomb interactions7,8, but there has been a sustained desire to bring laser-cooling techniques to particles in macroscopically separated traps5,9,10, extending quantum control techniques to previously inaccessible particles such as highly charged ions, molecular ions and antimatter. Sympathetic cooling of protons and antiprotons with a common endcap Penning trap.

2017

We present an experiment to sympathetically cool protons and antiprotons in a Penning trap by resonantly coupling the particles to laser cooled beryllium ions using a common endcap technique. Our analysis shows that preparation of (anti)protons at mK temperatures on timescales of tens of seconds is feasible. Successful implementation of the technique will have immediate and significant impact on high-precision comparisons of the fundamental properties of protons and antiprotons. This in turn will provide some of the most stringent tests of the fundamental symmetries of the Standard Model.

Inhomogeneous vortex tangles in counterflow superfluid turbulence: flow in convergent channels

Abstract We investigate the evolution equation for the average vortex length per unit volume L of superfluid turbulence in inhomogeneous flows. Inhomogeneities in line density L andincounterflowvelocity V may contribute to vortex diffusion, vortex formation and vortex destruction. Development of spontaneous airway changes consistent with human asthma in mice lacking T-bet.

Human asthma is associated with airway infiltration by T helper 2 (TH2) lymphocytes. We observed reduced expression of the TH1 transcription factor, T-bet, in T cells from airways of patients with asthma compared with that in T cells from airways of nonasthmatic patients, suggesting that loss of T-bet might be associated with asthma. Mice with a targeted deletion of the T-bet gene and severe combined immunodeficient mice receiving CD4+cells from T-bet knockout mice spontaneously demonstrated multiple physiological and inflammatory features characteristic of asthma.
