A Novel Gas Chromatographic Method to Measure Sorption of Dense Gases into Polymers

A novel experimental approach to determine the solubility of gaseous compounds inside polymers is here described. The method is based on the gas chromatographic determination of the composition of the fluid phase at equilibrium with the polymer. To take into account the effect of the volume swelling on the measurement a suitable probe, nonabsorbable by the polymer, was added to the fluid phase. Under the adopted configuration the apparatus can operate up to 35 MPa and 80°C. Characterization of interaction between tricyclic structures containing pharmaceuticals, their models and humic substances.

Their persistence and wide consumption identify pharmaceuticals as “emerging pollutants”. The complexation of pharmaceuticals containing adamantine ring structures and their model substances with humic acids (HA) of different origins was compared using fluorescence spectroscopy as a function of pH, humic acid concentration, ionic strength, and molecular mass of HA. Binding constants between the studied pharmaceuticals and humic acids were calculated. A combination of dynamic and static quenching processes as indicated by nonlinear Stern-Volmer plots and high Kd values were positively correlated with the concentration of carboxyl groups in the studied humic acids. Lipid content of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with different degrees of ethanol tolerance

We analysed the fatty acid and sterol compositions of various Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains with ethanol tolerance varying from 4% to 12% (v/v) ethanol and at different concentrations of ethanol. The results we obtained agree with the existence of a relationship between membrane fluidity and ethanol tolerance but they do not support a direct role of unsaturated fatty acids in this tolerance. On the other hand, they support the importance of ergosterol in this phenomenon.

Stability of fatty acids and tocopherols during cold storage of human milk

The stability of fatty acids and tocopherols from human milk from 8 healthy lactating mothers was determined in fresh milk and after cold storage. Refrigeration at 4 °C for 48 h or freezing at −20 °C for 30 days did not significantly decrease fatty acid contents (mg per 100 g human milk), or concentrations of α-, β-, γ- and δ-tocopherol isomers, compared with fresh milk. Results obtained in the present study showed that cold storage under the usual storage conditions in neonatal units, at home or in milk banks did not have a detrimental effect upon fatty acids and tocopherols contents in human milk. Enzymatic methods are sensitive and can be quite specific but they are subject to interference by inhibitors and not all are stoichiometric. The present work proposes some modifications of the Heath & Tappel (Anal Biochem 1976; 7:184—91) enzymatic method of determination of lipid hydroperoxides in order to standardize and automate it and to meet the analytical criteria required for a biological assay. Alteration in membrane fluidity and lipid composition, and modulation of H(+)-ATPase activity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae caused by decanoic acid.

Decanoic acid, a lipophilic agent, inhibited in vitro the plasma membrane H+-ATPase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown in YPD medium. Conversely, when decanoic acid (35 μM) was present in the growth medium, the measured H+-ATPase activity was four times higher than that of control cells. K m, and pH and orthovanadate sensitivity were the same for the two growth conditions, which indicated that H+-ATPase activation was not due to conformational changes in the enzyme. Scaffolds suitable for tissue engineering applications were prepared by Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) starting from a ternary solution PLLA/dioxane/water.
