Excited-state non-radiative decay in stilbenoid compounds: An: Ab initio quantum-chemistry study on size and substituent effects

2019

In the framework of optoelectronic luminescent materials, non-radiative decay mechanisms are relevant to interpret efficiency losses. These radiationless processes are herein studied theoretically for a series of stilbenoid derivatives, including distyrylbenzene (DSB) and cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene (DCS) molecules in vacuo. Given the difficulties of excited-state reaction path determinations, a simplified computational strategy is defined based on the exploration of the potential energy surfaces (PES) along the elongation, twisting, and pyramidalization of the vinyl bonds. For such exploration, density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent (TD)DFT, and complete-active-space self-co…

Interface Solid-State Reactions in La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/Ce0.8Sm0.2O2 and La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/BaCe0.9Y0.1O3 Disclosed by X-ray Microspectroscopy

2019

The stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface is a critical issue in solid-oxide cells working at high temperatures, affecting their durability. In this paper, we investigate the solid-state chemical mechanisms that occur at the interface between two electrolytes (Ce0.8Sm0.2O2, SDC, and BaCe0.9Y0.1O3, BCY) and a cathode material (La0.8Sr0.2MnO3, LSM) after prolonged thermal treatments. Following our previous work on the subject, we used X-ray microspectroscopy, a technique that probes the interface with submicrometric resolution combining microanalytical information with the chemical and structural information coming from space-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In LSM/BCY, the …

Three-ring filters increase the effective NA up to 1.46 in optical sectioning fluorescence microscopy

2003

Single-photon fluorescence confocal microscopy techniques can be combined with the use of specific binary filters in order to increase their optical sectioning capability. We present a novel class of axially super-resolving binary pupil filters specially designed to reach this aim. These filters let us to obtain a relevant compression of the z-response together with the reduction of the photo-bleaching effect typically inherent to apodization techniques. The fact of joining both the three-ring filters we propose in the illumination path, and the confocal detection gives rise to an important effective increase of lenses of effective numerical aperture.

Characterizing the Glassy Phase of a Statistical Copolymer Monolayer

1999

Monolayers of a statistical copolymer with a poly(methacrylate) chain and hydrophilic and hydrophobic side groups are investigated at the air/water interface. The isotherms suggest a fluid and a frozen phase. With in-situ X-ray reflectivity the monolayer thickness is determined to be 2.5 nm or less. The shear viscosity in the fluid phase is extremely high yet can be described in the framework of the free area model. However, the parameter which characterizes the overlap of holes available for a diffusing monomer unit is a factor of 2 higher than expected, suggesting local diffusion barriers formed by nanosized clusters. In the glassy phase single-molecule fluorescence shows anomalous diffus…

Linear and Angular Distyrylpyrazines with Terminal Donor Groups: Synthesis, Solvatochromism, and Acidochromism of the Electronic Spectra

2011

A series of linear and angular distyrylpyrazines and lateral donor groups has been prepared by aldol condensation between dimethylpyrazines and the appropriate aromatic aldehyde. The optical absorption and emission properties of these systems were studied in different solvents and media. The materials display a strong solvatochromism of the emission that is reflected by large red shifts of their fluorescence emission maxima on increasing the solvent polarity. This behaviour suggests a highly polar emitting state, which is characteristic of compounds that undergo an internal charge transfer upon excitation. Upon protonation, the UV-vis spectra are altered, and the fluorescence intensity of t…

Double pulse laser induced breakdown spectroscopy applied to natural and artificial materials from cultural heritages

2009

Abstract The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an applied physical technique that has shown in recent years its great potential for rapid qualitative analysis of materials. Thanks to the possibility to implement a portable instrument that perform LIBS analysis, this technique is revealed to be particularly useful for in situ analysis in the field of cultural heritages. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the potentiality of LIBS technique in the field of cultural heritages, with respect to the chemical characterization of complex matrix as calcareous and refractory materials for further quantitative analyses on cultural heritages. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyses were used…

Fluorescent nitrogen-rich carbon nanodots with an unexpected β-C3N4nanocrystalline structure

2016

Carbon nanodots are a class of nanoparticles with variable structures and compositions which exhibit a range of useful optical and photochemical properties. Since nitrogen doping is commonly used to enhance the fluorescence properties of carbon nanodots, understanding how nitrogen affects their structure, electronic properties and fluorescence mechanism is important to fully unravel their potential. Here we use a multi-technique approach to study heavily nitrogen-doped carbon dots synthesized by a simple bottom-up approach and capable of bright and color-tunable fluorescence in the visible region. These experiments reveal a new variant of optically active carbonaceous dots, that is a nanocr…

Dynamic In Vivo Biocompatibility of Angiogenic Peptide Amphiphile Nanofibers

2009

Biomaterials that promote angiogenesis have great potential in regenerative medicine for rapid revascularization of damaged tissue, survival of transplanted cells, and healing of chronic wounds. Supramolecular nanofibers formed by self-assembly of a heparin-binding peptide amphiphile and heparan sulfate-like glycosaminoglycans were evaluated here using a dorsal skinfold chamber model to dynamically monitor the interaction between the nanofiber gel and the microcirculation, representing a novel application of this model. We paired this model with a conventional subcutaneous implantation model for static histological assessment of the interactions between the gel and host tissue. In the stati…

Boosting the properties of a fluorescent dye by encapsulation into halloysite nanotubes

2021

Abstract The synthesis of a new biocompatible bichromophoric system (CURBO) was developed, by connecting the skeleton of the naturally occurring curcumin to a BODIPY derivative. The system exhibited an intense fluorescence band with maximum at about 510 nm in organic solvent, while its emission spectra in aqueous solution were more complicated and slightly red-shifted, due to the effect of aggregation for the poor solubility of the dyad. To overcome these problems, the bichomophoric system has been loaded into the halloysite nanotubes (HNT). The HNT/CURBO nanocomposite, suspended in aqueous solution, showed an intensity of emission in the red region of the spectrum higher than the one exhib…
