Salt spray fog ageing of hybrid composite/metal rivet joints for automotive applications
2017
Abstract The present experimental investigation aims to investigate the effect of salt-fog exposition on the mechanical behaviour of composite/metal riveted joints. To this aim, two kinds of joint were exposed to salt-fog environmental conditions according to ASTM B117 standard, for fifteen weeks. In particular, two composite laminates (i.e. glass fibre and carbon fibre/epoxy composites) were used as composite substrate joined with the metal substrate (i.e. aluminium alloy Al 6060). Single-lap shear tests were carried out in order to evaluate the evolution of the mechanical performances and the damage mechanisms of the riveted joints during the ageing exposition. The results evidence that t…
An aging evaluation of the bearing performances of glass fiber composite laminate in salt spray fog environment
2019
The aim of the present paper is to assess the bearing performance evolution of pinned, glass-composite laminates due to environmental aging in salt-spray fog tests. Glass fibers/epoxy pinned laminates were exposed for up to 60 days in salt-spraying, foggy environmental conditions (according to ASTM B117 standard). In order to evaluate the relationship between mechanical failure mode and joint stability over increasing aging time, different single lap joints, measured by the changing hole diameter (D), laminate width (W) and hole free edge distance (E), were characterized at varying aging steps. Based on this approach, the property-structure relationship of glass-fibers/epoxy laminates was a…
Isotopic composition of the precipitations in the central Mediterranean: Origin marks and orographic precipitation effects
2006
The isotopic composition of the rainfall in northwestern Sicily (Italy, central Mediterranean) was investigated in the period February 2002 to March 2003. A rain gauge network was installed and sampled monthly. The monthly values of the D and 18O ratios showed a wide range that reflected seasonal climatic variations. Mean weighted values were used to define an isotopic model of precipitation. Temporal variations in deuterium excess were also investigated. Using mean volume weighted values, the Local Meteoric Water Line (LMWL) can be represented by the equation: δD = 4.7δ18O - 8.2 (r2 = 0.96). Deuterium excess (d = δD - 8δ18O) was found to be strongly related to orography. The coastline samp…
Influences of synoptic situation and teleconnections on fog-water collection in the Mediterranean Iberian Peninsula, 2003-2012
2019
Fog-water collection has been widely analysed for its quantification and potential uses; however, there are few studies assessing the synoptic conditions and large-scale teleconnection patterns that affect its occurrence. Focusing on the Mediterranean Iberian Peninsula, this work aims to analyse the synoptic patterns, both at surface level and 850 hPa geopotential height, that most likely to favour fog-water collection, and to quantify the relationship between fog-water collection and the NAOi (North Atlantic Oscillation index), MOi (Mediterranean Oscillation index) as well as WeMOi (Western Mediterranean Oscillation index) teleconnection patterns. For this purpose, daily fog-water observat…
Chemical characterization in coastal fog and rain at Mount Monduver fog-collection station, Mediterranean Iberian Peninsula
2021
Abstract An experimental site was selected for fog- and rain-water quality analyses. The selected location corresponds to Mount Monduver of 843 m elevation, being geographically centered in the Mediterranean Iberian Peninsula. Single fog- and rain-water samples were taken manually with a dedicated fog and rain collectors, to prevent any contamination with dry-deposition. Besides, a permanently exposed fog collector and a rain gauge were also used for the collection of water samples affected by dry deposition. Results indicated that all chemical analyses complied with Spanish drinking water regulations, except for the particular case of the dry-deposition contaminated water samples. A furthe…

Distribution of radiative energy in ground fog
1970
This study deals with the distribution of solar and infrared radiation in a multiple scattering and absorbing fog consisting of water droplets and water vapor. An iterative solution of the radiative transfer equation, as formulated by Chandrasekhar (1960), is presented here, which is utilized to obtain radiative intensities, fluxes and their vertical divergence for the entire infrared spectrum. A sufficient number of sample computations is carried out also in the solar spectrum such as to verify the applicability of the numerical procedure for the entire heat spectrum. All calculations are made for two fog models, representing low and high fog for a liquid cloud water concentration of 0.1 g…
Fog attenuation prediction for optical and infrared waves
2004
The principal disadvantage of using free space optics (FSO) telecommunication systems is the disturbing role played by the atmosphere on light propagation and thus on the channel capacity, availability, and link reliability. The wavelength choice is currently a subject of disagreement among designers and users of FSO equipments. Generally this equipment operates in the visible and the near IR at 690, 780, 850, and 1550 nm. Several authors affirm that equipment working at 1550 nm presents less atmospheric attenuation in the presence of fog and thus better link availability. Others consider that for dense fogs (visibility<500 m), all wavelengths are attenuated in the same way (wavelength inde…
