Anomalous scaling of the critical temperature of unmixing with chain length for two-dimensional polymer blends
2003
The thermodynamics, structure and the chain configurations of symmetrical polymer mixtures confined into ultrathin films are studied by Monte Carlo simulations of the bond fluctuation model. It is shown that the Flory-Huggins–type scaling of the critical temperature (Tc ~ N) with chain length N in the bulk is replaced by a weaker increase, Tc ~ N1/2, in an ultrathin film, and this is interpreted in terms of geometric arguments. The pair-correlation function g(r) of monomers from different chains exhibits a pronounced correlation hole, and the density of intermolecular contacts zc decreases with N as zc ~ N−1/2.
Interaction Between Polymer Brush-Coated Spherical Nanoparticles: Effect of Solvent Quality
2012
The interaction between two spherical polymer brushes in solvents of variable quality is studied by molecular dynamics simulation and by self-consistent field theory, varying both the radius of the spherical particles and their distance, as well as the grafting density and the chain length of the end-grafted flexible polymer chains. Both the potential of mean force between the particles as a function of their distance is computed, for various choices of the parameters mentioned above, and the structural characteristics are discussed (density profiles, average end-to-end distance of grafted chains, etc.) It is found that for rather short chain lengths and not too large grafting densities, is…
Diastereodivergent Synthesis of Fluorinated Cyclic β(3)-Amino Acid Derivatives.
2015
The ability of 2-p-tolylbenzyl carbanions to behave as a source of chiral benzylic nucleophiles has been shown in its reaction with fluorinated imines. The process takes place with high levels of stereocontrol, rendering the corresponding amines as single diastereoisomers. Subsequent cross-metathesis followed by intramolecular aza-Michael reaction makes the synthesis of fluorinated homoproline derivatives bearing three stereogenic centers possible. Furthermore, the selectivity of the cyclization process can easily be tuned up in a diastereodivergent manner simply by changing the reaction conditions.
An ELF analysis of the C–C bond formation step in the N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed hydroacylation of unactivated C–C double bonds
2012
The changes in electron-density along the C–C bond-formation step in the N-heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed hydroacylation of unactivated double bonds has been studied by an electron localization function (ELF) analysis at the B3LYP/6-31G** level in order to characterize the reaction mechanism. Analysis of DFT reactivity indices and the natural bond orbital and ELF analysis at the most relevant points of the intrinsic reaction coordinate indicate that the reaction path takes place through a two-stage one-step mechanism with non-polar character. In the first stage a hydrogen atom is transferred from the hydroxyl group of Breslow intermediate 12 to the terminal olefinic carbon atom, to yield a …
Experimental and DFT study of the conversion of ephedrine derivatives into oxazolidinones. Double SN2 mechanism against SN1 mechanism
2010
Sulfonation of the N-Boc derivatives of 1,2-aminoalcohols, such as ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, norephedrine, norpseudoephedrine, thiomicamine, and chloramphenicol yields a mixture of the corresponding oxazolidinones with inversion (erythro derivatives) and/or retention of configuration (threo derivatives)at C5. We suggest a competition between two mechanisms: an intramolecular SN2 process initiated by attack of the carbonyl oxygen of the Boc group to the benzylic carbon and the other one through a double SN2 process. In the erythro derivatives the first mechanism is predominant, while in the threo derivatives both mechanisms have similar energy. This hypothesis is supported by theoretical c…
Applications of “Forced Rayleigh Scattering” and “Photon Correlation Spectroscopy” for the examination of transport properties in polymer melts
2007
The importance of optical techniques for the characterization of the dynamics in polymers has increased in the last 10 years. This was caused by the rapid development in optics and microelectronics which has made these techniques easily available and extremely precise. However, in case of the examination of transport properties in bulk polymers, new difficulties arise due to the comparably slow dynamics underlying these phenomena. The topic of this paper is a small survey of two optical techniques which can be applied to solve the arising problems and a presentation of some results of our working group concerning slow translational transport processes in polymers. In a first part, the techn…
Conformational investigation of α, β-dehydropeptides
2009
The crystal structure of Ac-Pro-delta Val-NHCH3 was examined to determine the influence of the alpha,beta-dehydrovaline residue on the nature of peptide conformation. The peptide crystallizes from methanol-diethyl ether solution at 4 degrees in needle-shaped form in orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 11.384(2) A, b = 13.277(2) A, c = 9.942(1) A, V = 1502.7(4) A3, Z = 4, Dm = 1.17 g.cm-3 and Dc = 1.18 g.cm-3. The structure was solved by direct methods using SHELXS-86 and refined to an R value of 0.057 for 1922 observed reflections. The peptide is found to adopt a beta-bend between the type I and the type III conformation with phi 1 = -68.3(4) degrees, psi 1 = -20.1(4) degrees, p…
Intramolecular coupling of acetylenic groups of bis(alkynyl)phosphanes and silanes mediated by benzynezirconocene: a route to new mono- and tricyclic…
2004
Benzo-zirconacyclohexadiene-phospha or silacyclobutene fused ring systems are easily prepared via a benzynezirconocene intermediate by means of thermolysis of Cp 2 ZrPh 2 in the presence of bis(alkynyl)phosphanes or silanes. These polyunsaturated systems are the source of a variety of new mono- or tricyclic heterocycles incorporating either one or two heteroatoms.
ChemInform Abstract: Toward an Understanding of the Mechanisms of the Intramolecular [5 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction of γ-Pyrones Bearing Tethered Alk…
2000
The molecular mechanism for the intramolecular [5 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of β-silyloxy-γ-pyrones bearing tethered alkenes has been characterized using ab initio methods. A comparative study for this sort of cycloaddition carried out at different computational levels points out that the B3LYP/6-31G* calculations give similar barriers to those obtained with the MP3/6-31G* level. Analysis of the energetic results shows that the reaction takes place along a stepwise process: first, the migration of the neighboring silyl group to the carbonyl group of the γ-pyrone takes place to give a weak oxidopyrylium ylide intermediate, which by a subsequent concerted intramolecular [5 + 2] cycloadditi…
Rapid characterization of alkylpolyphosphonates by CZE with indirect photometric and mass spectrometric detection.
2006
Methods for the rapid characterization of industrial alkylpolyphosphonates (APPs) by infusion MS and CZE with indirect photometric (IPD) and MS detection are described. Technical-grade APPs, including alkylaminepolyphosphonates with 3-5 phosphonate groups and different hydrocarbon skeletons, hydroxyethyl-amino-bis(methylenephosphonic acid), hydroxyethylidene-diphosphonic acid, and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid, were examined. A 10 mM solution of adenosine triphosphate disodium salt at pH 2.2 was used as BGE. The nominal compounds of the industrial APPs and their impurities were well resolved in less than 15 min. The peaks were identified by using extracted ion electropherograms…
