Steel jacketing of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a common retrofitting technique used to restore bearing and deformation capacity of buildings presenting structural deficiencies. For practical reasons, steel angles are in several cases arranged leaving a gap with the end beams or slabs. Geometrical analysis of self-compensating suspension systems for railcar engineering

The present analysis addresses several passive tilt systems for railroad cars aiming to compensate for the cart deficiency on curved tracks. To this end, the virtual centre of suspension must be located as close as possible to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the coach, above the mass centre level for stability reasons. On the one hand, pantograph or Peaucellier's mechanisms may achieve the correct self-compensation. There is one aspect of globalization of IT work that appears only in fleeting glimpses in the mainstream IS literature and is sidelined in the discourse in general. If global IT work is painted mainly as outsourcing IT-infused work from developed countries to poorer countries (euphemistically referred to as "low income countries"), shouldn't the development of capabilities in these very same less-developed countries be a vital cog? Simply put, if these countries do not have a capable workforce, IT work, or any other work for that matter, cannot be outsourced to these countries. AbstractThe fundamental period of vibration appears to be one of the most critical parameters for the seismic design and assessment of structures. In the present paper, the results of a large-scale analytical investigation on the parameters that affect the fundamental period of reinforced concrete structures are presented. Infill masonry walls in framed structures make a significant contribution to the response under seismic actions. With special regard to reinforced concrete (RC) structures, it is known that internal forces modifications caused by the frame–infill interaction may be not supported by the surrounding frame because of the additional shear forces arising at the ends of beams and columns. Hybrid optimal control problems are, in general, difficult to solve. A current research goal is to isolate those problems that lead to tractable solutions [5]. In this paper, we identify a special class of hybrid optimal control problems which are easy to solve. We do this by using a paradigm borrowed from the Operations Research field. As main result, we present a solution algorithm that converges to the exact solution in polynomial time.
