Steel jacketing of reinforced concrete (RC) columns is a common retrofitting technique used to restore bearing and deformation capacity of buildings presenting structural deficiencies. For practical reasons, steel angles are in several cases arranged leaving a gap with the end beams or slabs. Despite this disconnection, the angles are still able to support a non-negligible portion of load because of the frictional forces developed along the column-angle contact interface. Geometrical analysis of self-compensating suspension systems for railcar engineering

The present analysis addresses several passive tilt systems for railroad cars aiming to compensate for the cart deficiency on curved tracks. To this end, the virtual centre of suspension must be located as close as possible to the longitudinal plane of symmetry of the coach, above the mass centre level for stability reasons. On the one hand, pantograph or Peaucellier's mechanisms may achieve the correct self-compensation. A polynomial algorithm solving a special class of hybrid optimal control problems

Hybrid optimal control problems are, in general, difficult to solve. A current research goal is to isolate those problems that lead to tractable solutions [5]. In this paper, we identify a special class of hybrid optimal control problems which are easy to solve. We do this by using a paradigm borrowed from the Operations Research field.
