Electromagnetic field fluctuations near a dielectric-vacuum boundary and surface divergences in the ideal conductor limit

2012

We consider the electric and magnetic field fluctuations in the vacuum state in the region external to a half-space filled with a homogeneous non-dissipative dielectric. We discuss an appropriate limit to an ideal metal and concentrate our interest on the renormalized field fluctuations, or equivalently to renormalized electric and magnetic energy densities, in the proximity of the dielectric-vacuum interface. We show that surface divergences of field fluctuations arise at the interface in an appropriate ideal conductor limit, and that our limiting procedure allows to discuss in detail their structure. Field fluctuations close to the surface can be investigated through the retarded Casimir-…

Dispersion Interactions between Neutral Atoms and the Quantum Electrodynamical Vacuum

2018

Dispersion interactions are long-range interactions between neutral ground-state atoms or molecules, or polarizable bodies in general, due to their common interaction with the quantum electromagnetic field. They arise from the exchange of virtual photons between the atoms, and, in the case of three or more atoms, are not additive. In this review, after having introduced the relevant coupling schemes and effective Hamiltonians, as well as properties of the vacuum fluctuations, we~outline the main properties of dispersion interactions, both in the nonretarded (van der Waals) and retarded (Casimir--Polder) regime. We then discuss their deep relation with the existence of the vacuum fluctuation…

Energy level shifts of a uniformly accelerated atom in the presence of boundary conditions

2009

We discuss the radiative level shifts of an atom moving with uniform acceleration near an infinite reflecting plate. We first consider the case of a two-level system interacting with a massless scalar field in the vacuum state. The acceleration of the two-level atom is supposed in a direction parallel to the conducting plate. We evaluate the contribution of vacuum fluctuations and of the radiation reaction field to the energy shift of the atomic levels, and discuss their behaviour as a function of the atomic acceleration and of the atom-plate distance. Then, we investigate the more general case of an hydrogen atom accelerating near a perfectly reflecting plate and interacting with the elect…

Time-dependent Maxwell field operators and field energy density for an atom near a conducting wall

2009

We consider the time evolution of the electric and magnetic field operators for a two-level atom, interacting with the electromagnetic field, placed near an infinite perfectly conducting wall. We solve iteratively the Heisenberg equations for the field operators and obtain the electric and magnetic energy density operators around the atom (valid for any initial state). Then we explicitly evaluate them for an initial state with the atom in its bare ground state and the field in the vacuum state. We show that the results can be physically interpreted as the superposition of the fields propagating directly from the atom and the fields reflected on the wall. Relativistic causality in the field …

The influence of time-dependent phenomena in segmental construction of concrete cable-stayed bridges

2011

Construction stages of a cable-stayed bridge are characterized by a sequence in which geometric configuration, restraints and consequently stress and strain patterns vary many times till the final arrangement is achieved. When construction of concrete bridges is made by cantilever method the influence of time-dependent phenomena becomes significant. In this study an evaluation of stay stressing procedures is given by taking into account creep and shrinkage in cantilever construction of concrete cable-stayed bridges. A methodology of stay stressing is proposed with the final target of reaching the desired geometric configuration. Comparison with classical analyses performed by backward metho…

Adjustable prestressing for construction stages of incrementally launched bridges

2014

Incrementally launched bridges, which are generally built with the static scheme of a continuous beam on supports, change their scheme several times during launching. In these different configurations, internal forces vary and bending moments of opposite signs occur in the same sections for different positions of deck during advancement. In these bridges, two different kinds of prestressing are necessary: a temporary one during launching and a definitive one in service life. In this study, the possibility of implementing automatic adjustable prestressing for the launching stages is investigated; the launch prestressing is partially supplied by a system which can change the tension value in …

Weighting non-covalent forces in the molecular recognition of C60. Relevance of concave–convex complementarity

2008

The relative contributions of several weak intermolecular forces to the overall stability of the complexes formed between structurally related receptors and [60]fullerene are compared, revealing a discernible contribution from concave–convex complementarity. The evolution of market power in European banking

2017

This paper analyses the effect that European financial market integration has had on the evolution of the banks' market power disparities. The results show that market power disparity has narrowed among eurozone banks. The reduction is attributable to the convergence in the average levels of market power of the European banking sectors. In contrast, the disparities observed within each country have remained stable. As a result, the measures adopted to advance towards a single banking market should be complemented by measures at the national level designed to intensify competition among the banks within a given country.

Market entry decisions of US small and medium‐sized software firms

2008

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate market entry decisions of the US software SMEs by analyzing the impact of the most obvious factors (cultural distance, geographical distance, country risk, and three market size variables) in traditional internationalization theories to target country selection. By investigating the influence of these commonly cited macro‐level factors, this study proposes the best indicator for market entry decisions of the US small and medium‐sized software firms.Design/methodology/approachThis study uses a quantitative research approach applied to a sample of 100 US small and medium‐sized software firms.FindingsEmpirical findings in this study indicate t…

Non-syndromic Mitral Valve Dysplasia Mutation Changes the Force Resilience and Interaction of Human Filamin A

2018

International audience; Filamin A (FLNa), expressed in endocardial endothelia during fetal valve morphogenesis, is key in cardiac development. Missense mutations in FLNa cause non-syndromic mitral valve dysplasia (FLNA-MVD). Here, we aimed to reveal the currently unknown underlying molecular mechanism behind FLNA-MVD caused by the FLNa P637Q mutation. The solved crystal structure of the FLNa3-5 P637Q revealed that this mutation causes only minor structural changes close to mutation site. These changes were observed to significantly affect FLNa's ability to transmit cellular force and to interact with its binding partner. The performed steered molecular dynamics simulations showed that signi…
