Trisomy 12 and translocation (7;9) in an ovarian immature teratoma.
1989
We report a case of an immature malignant ovarian teratoma with peritoneal implants diagnosed in an 18-year-old woman. The tumor was brought into remission after surgery (three laparotomies) and adjuvant chemotherapy. A residual peritoneal implant showed a mature epithelial and glial configuration. Histologically, the neuroectodermal component was dominant in the original tumor as well as in the metastases, being confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. A stem cell line has been obtained with cell culture, having a germ cell character and a yolk sac configuration. This line possessed a trisomy 12 and a translocation (7;9) similar to other chromosomal abnormalities describe…
Circadian variations of ?synaptic? bodies in the pineal glands of Brattleboro rats
1990
The function of the mammalian pineal gland is regulated primarily by the sympathetic system. Arginine-vasopressin (AVP) may also be involved in the regulation of pineal melatonin synthesis under experimental conditions. The present study was conducted in the AVP-deficient rat strain, the Brattleboro rat, to investigate whether the numbers and rhythms of pineal "synaptic" bodies in this strain are different from those found in intact rats. AVP or its non-vasoconstrictive analog, deamino-D-AVP, was also injected intra-arterially in Brattleboro or Sprague-Dawley rats to test whether this procedure influences "synaptic" body numbers. Brattleboro rats were killed at different time-points through…
Forensic tools for the diagnosis of electrocution death: Case study and literature review
2018
Diagnosis of death by electrocution may be difficult when electric marking is not visible or unclear. Accordingly, the body of a man who appeared to have died from accidental electrocution was carefully forensically analysed. Macroscopic and microscopic analysis of the current mark was carried out using a variable-pressure scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray microanalyser to highlight skin metallisation, indicating the presence of iron and zinc. The histological findings of electrocution myocardial damage were supported by the results of biochemical analysis which demonstrated the creatine kinase-MB and cardiac troponin I elevation. The effects of electric cu…
Detecting Asset Misappropriation: Forensic Accounting
2021
The main task of the investigation of asset misappropriation is the correct classification of a crime: identification of the fact of misappropriation and determination of the amount of misappropriated assets. Specificity of asset diversity, asset accounting requirements, and a wide range of misappropriation opportunities require specialised knowledge in accounting and economics that investigators often lack. The aim of the study is to increase the knowledge of investigators in forensic accounting in order to increase effectiveness of investigations in detecting asset misappropriation. In this article, the authors, Latvian and Lithuanian accounting experts, talk about typologies of asset mis…
Science and law in the time of cholera: the mystery of the biscuits in Torroja (1865)
2018
By focussing on a case of collective poisoning in 1865, four features of forensic cultures are analysed: technologies for detection, authorized voices, regulations in action and the predominant social anxieties. Local newspapers and archival documents kept in the medical academies of Barcelona and Madrid are analysed. The analysis shows the tensions between various types of proof employed in legal medicine and the ambiguities between epidemic diseases and poisoning accidents. In the first section, I review the fears caused by the cholera epidemic in 1865, which was the first explanation of the accident. The changes of popular perception are also discussed by analysing contemporary newspaper…
Forensic multidimesnional reconstruction as based on post-mortem image examination and spherical photography
2017
The aim of the paper is to present the methods of creating multi-dimensional reconstructions used in modern forensic medicine and state-of-the-art autopsy technique. Making use of the computer tomography technology and sophisticated software by the forensic pathologists allows a new standard of quality to be introduced into the forensic medical examination and hitherto unprecedented effects to be obtained. These developments significantly enhance the information available to the expert, particularly in case where an incident involved the use of firearms, the presence of foreign object in the body of the deceased, or advanced decay of the corps. Furthermore, the paper touches upon a subject …

Testing the recoverability of grass DNA transferred to textiles for forensic purpose
2010
Botanical evidence such as grass stains on textiles is sometimes present in the crime scene and can allow investigators to establish an association between persons linked to the criminal event and the crime scene. In this study, extraction of grass DNA from stains on textiles was undertaken. DNA extraction was performed on four grass species conserved both indoors and outdoors for 7, 14 and 30 days after staining. Once the extracted DNA was quantified, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifying a fragment of the internal transcribed spacer was performed.DNA extraction was successful in 97.5% of samples. No significant differences in the amount of extracted DNA were detected among species …
Linee guida in ortodonzia e attuale valutazione dei profili di responsabilitÃ
2016
Alla luce della nuova legge entrata in vigore in Italia, si discute il valore protettivo delle linee guida in ortodonzia sotto il profilo medico-legale. OBJECTIVES. In view of the Italian law recently come into force, this study aims at discussing the protective value of orthodontic guidelines in terms of legal medicine. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A review of orthodontic guidelines was conducted, including general orthodontic guidelines as well as specific guidelines for clinical and surgical cases. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS. Orthodontic practices envisaging professional liability include diagnosis, prevention, interception, care planning and treatment of all types of malocclusion (even when asso…
