Synthesis, characterization and the first crystal structure of the Zn(II) complex of 4,6-O-ethylidine-N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-β-D-glucopyranosylamine

2001

4,6-O-Ethylidine-N-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-β-D-glucopyranosylamine (H3L1) and N-(5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene-4,6-O-ethylidine-β-D-glucopyranosylamine (H3L2) molecules possessing a–C-1–N=C(H)–moiety for metal-ion binding were synthesized by condensing the 4,6–O–ethylidene–β–D–glucopyranosylamine with salicylaldehyde or 5–bromosalicylaldehyde. Complexes of these ligands with Zn(II) were isolated and characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR, UV–Vis absorption, NMR spectroscopic and FAB mass spectrometric techniques. The structure of the Zn(II) complex derived from H3L1 was established for the first time by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The anomeric nature of the saccharide moie…

Impact of molecular weight on the formation of electrosprayed chitosan microcapsules as delivery vehicles for bioactive compounds.

2016

The molecular weight of chitosan is one of its most determinant characteristics, which affects its processability and its performance as a biomaterial. However, information about the effect of this parameter on the formation of electrosprayed chitosan microcapsules is scarce. In this work, the impact of chitosan molecular weight on its electrosprayability was studied and correlated with its effect on the viscosity, surface tension and electrical conductivity of solutions. A Discriminant Function Analysis revealed that the morphology of the electrosprayed chitosan materials could be correctly predicted using these three parameters for almost 85% of the samples. The suitability of using elect…

Photocatalytic oxidation of phenol on TiO2 powders. A Fourier transform infrared study

1994

Abstract In the present paper a detailed investigation of a well known photoreaction, i.e. phenol photodegradation in the presence of TiO2, has been carried out. The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique has been used to characterize the catalyst surface and to follow the photoprocess by “in situ” measurements in a gas—solid regime, simulating the aqueous liquid—solid regime in which this photodegradation reaction has been usually carried out. The influence on the photoprocess of the surface hydroxylation of the catalyst has been investigated and the presence of some reaction intermediates has been revealed by FT-IR. The experimental results have demonstrated that the chosen gas—soli…

Conductimetric study of struvite crystallization in water as a function of pH

2017

Abstract The main objective of this work was to investigate the best pH for phosphorus removal from synthetic aqueous solutions using chemical precipitation of struvite, at constant temperature. The experimental approach, developed in the present study, consisted to precipitate struvite in synthetic wastewater containing PO 4 3− , NH 4 + and Mg 2+ ions in an equal molar ratio, using a stirred tank with continuous monitoring by conductimetry, at 25 °C. Different laboratory experiments were used to evaluate the effects of pH in the range of 8.5 till 11.8, on size, shape, and purity of the precipitated crystals. Struvite crystals were characterized by Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning ele…

PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE ACQUALADRONE ROSTRUM

2011

The archaeological discovery of the Acqualadrone rostrum (an offensive naval weapon mounted on the prow at the waterline), off the Italian coast near Messina in 2008, has led to the need for scientific research in order to plan the conservation treatment of this artefact. The discovery is exceptional because of the presence of a wooden section from the original ship. This paper describes the physico-chemical characterization of a metallic and two wooden samples by inductively coupled plasma – optical emission spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 13 C{ 1 H} cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, energy-dispe…

Analyzing chemical changes in verdigris pictorial specimens upon bacteria and fungi biodeterioration using voltammetry of microparticles

2017

[EN] It is reported the application of the voltammetry of microparticles (VMP), complemented with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques, to monitor the deterioration of verdigris pictorial specimens under the action of different biological agents. This methodology would be of application for identifying the type of biological agent causing deterioration of paintings, which is an important problem affecting cultural heritage. The analysis of biodeterioration processes is complicated by the fact that the action of microorganisms can affect both pigment and binding media. The deteriorat…

Investigation on four centuripe vases (late 3rd-2nd cent. B.C.) by portable X-ray fluorescence and total reflectance-FTIR

2021

Abstract Four Centuripe vases dated back to the late 3rd-2nd centuries B.C. were analysed using imaging under visible and ultra-violet illumination as well as complementary non-invasive and non-destructive portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) and Total Reflectance – Fourier Transform InfraRed (TR-FTIR) spectroscopies. The vases are of great importance since they represent a rare expression of the Hellenistic vase painting. Four specimens, a “pyxis”, a “lebes gamikos” and two “lekanides” decorated with figures of different type, are exhibited in the Antonino Salinas Archaeological Museum in Palermo-Italy. The investigation was aimed to identify the used pigments and the painting technique, to r…

Structural changes of glycolic acid (GA) complex with nitrogen induced by selective overtone excitation of the νOH mode were followed in argon matrices using FTIR spectroscopy. For the most stable SSC1 complex present in different trapping sites directly upon deposition site, selective changes in the νOH region were achieved upon near-infrared irradiation. Simultaneously, new conformers of the GA…N2 complex were formed, giving rise to several sets of bands in the νOH and νC=O regions of the spectra. Both position and intensity of new absorptions appeared to be highly sensitive on the wavelength of radiation used, as well as on the annealing of the matrix. Based on theoretical calculations a…

High resolution Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and analysis of the ν 6 band of jet-cooled Mo(CO) 6

2000

Abstract Rovibrational FTIR spectra of Mo(CO) 6 have been recorded in supersonic argon expansions at 0.004 cm −1 resolution. Rotational constants have been determined for the ν 6 fundamental band of Mo( 12 CO) 6 and for the parallel band of the symmetric top isotopomer Mo( 13 CO)( 12 CO) 5 . From these results, a precise estimate of the Coriolis parameter for the ν 6 band of the main isotopomer Mo( 12 CO) 6 is derived, necessary for the analysis of the ν 6 spectrum. The observation of an octahedral splitting clearly resolved for the highest J-lines in the R branch prompted the use of a specific treatment based on the tensorial formalism developed by J.P. Champion, M. Loete, G. Pierre (Spher…

Atomic layer deposition of polyimide thin films

2007

The atomic layer deposition (ALD) of different polyimide thin films has been studied. We have demonstrated self-limiting ALD deposition of PMDA–DAH, PMDA–EDA, PMDA–ODA and PMDA–PDA thin films at 160 °C. The maximum deposition rate of 5.8 A cycle−1 was obtained for the PMDA–DAH process. Although the deposition rate was high at 160 °C, a sudden decrease was observed when the temperature was increased. Regardless of the process studied, no film growth was obtained at 200 °C or above. Deposited polyimide films were analysed by FTIR, AFM and TOF-ERDA. According to the FTIR measurements, imide bonds were formed already in as-deposited films indicating polyimide formation without any additional th…
