Fractal dimension versus density of built-up surfaces in the periphery of Brussels

International audience; This paper aims at showing the usefulness of the fractal dimension for characterizing the spatial structure of the built-up surfaces within the periurban fringe. We first discuss our methodology and expectations in terms of operationality of the fractal dimension theoretically and geometrically. An empirical analysis is then performed on the southern periphery of Brussels (Brabant Wallon). We show how photocrosslinking of small nanoparticles within a very dilute colloidal dispersion leads to the formation of large fractal particle clusters, which have a strong influence on the viscosity of the dispersion although the overall solid content is well below 5 wt %. Furthermore, the solvent plays an important role because of its function as an optical filter, for example, in toluene only photocrosslinking but no photocleavage takes place. Therefore, a diffusion-controlled cluster growth mechanism, leading to clusters with low fractal dimension, is expected; on the other hand, in tetrahydrofuran the photoreaction is partially reversible. A novel partial discharge (PD) defect identification method is described. Starting with PD data on different families of specimens, a suitable set of parameters are determined and then used as input variables to a neural network for the purpose of identifying the defects within the insulation. Abstract The problem in this work is the computational characterization of cyclodextrins, crown ethers and hyaluronan (HA) as hosts of inclusion complexes for nanosized drug delivery vehicles in pharmaceutical formulations. The difficulty is addressed through a computational study of some thermodynamic, geometric and topological properties of the hosts. The calculated properties of oligosaccharides of D-glucopyranoses allow these to act as co-solvents of polyanions in water. In crown ethers, the central channel is computed. Abstract The elution behaviour of different polymer–solvent systems in three types of organic columns for SEC has been compared and interpreted. The experimental data show that the classical universal calibration is not accomplished. Deviations from a unique curve are observed due to the binary and ternary interactions between the components of the system (solvent, polymer and gel) which results on secondary mechanisms accompanying the main pure or “ideal” SEC separation mechanism. This paper presents a systematic in situ study of the process of formation of silico-calco-alkaline gels starting from a liquid colloidal solution containing different alkaline ions and different calcium concentration until the final gel state. The combined use of X-ray and neutron small-angle scattering (SAS) and dynamical rheometry techniques lead to a consistent description of the structure of the aggregates and of the mechanisms of aggregation involved in gel formation.
