The design of multifunctional polymer-based vectors, forming pDNA vaccines, offers great potential in cancer immune therapy. Pentafluorophenyl Ester-based Polymersomes as Nanosized Drug-Delivery Vehicles

In this work, activated ester chemistry is employed to synthesize biocompatible and readily functionalizable polymersomes. Via aminolysis of pentafluorophenyl methacrylate-based precursor polymers, an N-(2-hydroxypropyl) methacrylamide (HPMA)-analog hydrophilic block is obtained. The precursor polymers can be versatile functionalized by simple addition of suitable primary amines during aminolysis as demonstrated using a fluorescent dye. Vesicle formation is proven by cryoTEM and light scattering. Evolution of fitness in experimental populations of vesicular stomatitis virus

Abstract The evolution of fitness in experimental clonal populations of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) has been compared under different genetic (fitness of initial clone) and demographic (population dynamics) regimes. In spite of the high genetic heterogeneity among replicates within experiments, there is a clear effect of population dynamics on the evolution of fitness. Those populations that went through strong periodic bottlenecks showed a decreased fitness in competition experiments with wild type. Comparison of the fish assemblages associated with Posidonia oceanica after the partial loss and consequent fragmentation of the meadow

An extensive Posidonia oceanica meadow was partially destroyed by excavation, resulting in areas of seagrass habitat of equal complexity (shoot density) but different heterogeneity (degree of fragmentation). The fish assemblages associated with differently fragmented beds were compared from a landscape perspective. Cytoprotective effect of NMDA receptor antagonists on prion protein (PrionSc)-induced toxicity in rat cortical cell cultures

Rat cortical cells were incubated with the Scrapie prion protein, PrionSc. At concentrations of 3 ng/ml of PrionSc and higher, the viability of the cells decreased significantly after a 12-h incubation period. Simultaneously, the degree of DNA fragmentation increased. In control experiments with antibodies against PrionSc, PrionSc lost its deleterious effect on neurons. PrionSc did not affect the viability of astrocytes. The triaminopyridine flupirtine prevents cell death in rat cortical cells induced by N-methyl-D-aspartate and gp120 of HIV-1.

Abstract Flupirtine, a triaminopyridine derivative, is a non-opiate centrally acting analgesic agent with muscle relaxant properties. Now we show that this drug displays a potent cytoprotective effect on neurons (rat cortical cells) treated with (i) the excitatory amino acid N-methyl- d -aspartate (NMDA) or (ii) with the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) coat protein gp120. In the absence of the drug the two agents cause a >90% reduction of cell viability after a 18 h incubation. Cytocidal effects of Escherichia coli hemolysin on human T lymphocytes.

Escherichia coli hemolysin is the prototype of a large family of pore-forming toxins produced by gram-negative organisms. Besides its known cytotoxic activities against granulocytes, monocytes, endothelial cells, and renal epithelial cells, we now demonstrate that the toxin potently kills human T lymphocytes. Evidence based on different and independent approaches indicates that lymphocidal activity is due to formation of transmembrane pores.
