Alleles and haplotypes of the estrogen receptor alpha gene are associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion.
2010
Objective To investigate whether polymorphisms in estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) or beta (ERβ) genes are associated with a risk of miscarriage. Design A retrospectively analyzed, prospectively obtained database of cases and controls. Setting University hospital menopause unit. Patient(s) 177 women with at least one spontaneous abortion and 442 controls with at least one live birth and no history of miscarriage. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Genotype frequencies and odd ratios for abortion risk in cases and controls for four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in intron 1 (C>T and A>G), intron 4 (A>T), and exon 8 (T>C) for the ERα gene, and two SNPs located in intro…
FokI Polymorphism of the Vitamin D Receptor Gene Correlates with Parameters of Bone Mass and Turnover in a Female Population of the Italian Island of…
2005
One of the most promising genetic approaches to dissecting a multifactorial disease is represented by genetically isolated population studies. We studied a genetic marker in a cohort of women living on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, a geographically isolated population. Lampedusa, located between the African coast and Sicily, consists of a young genetic isolate (<20 generations) with an exponential growth in the last generations. We analyzed the association between the FokI vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism, previously proposed as a predictor of bone mass, with parameters of bone mass and turnover in a cohort of pre- and postmenopausal women living on Lampedusa. In 424 wome…
Association between CCK-AR gene and schizophrenia with auditory hallucinations
2007
[Objective]: Previous studies on a possible association between CCK-AR polymorphisms and schizophrenia have been controversial. The aim of the present study was to assess a potential association between schizophrenic patients with auditory hallucinations and polymorphisms of the CCK-AR gene.
Can Avatar Appearance Influence Physical Activity? User-Avatar Similarity and Proteus Effects on Cardiac Frequency and Step Counts
2020
This study combined user-avatar similarity and Proteus effect predictions to incentivize physical activity. 305 participants ran while wearing accelerometers and a heart rate monitor. They were randomly assigned to onscreen motion-capturing avatars displaying either participant or stranger faces dressed in sports or formal clothes. Participants assigned to avatars displaying their own face showed increased cardiac frequency compared with those exposed to avatars with a stranger's face. Relative to the remaining conditions, participants assigned to avatars with their own face also wearing sports clothes showed increased cardiac frequency but participants assigned to avatars with a stranger's…
Five-year results from the prospective European multicentre cohort study on radiofrequency segmental thermal ablation for incompetent great saphenous…
2015
AbstractBackgroundThis was a prospective study of radiofrequency segmental thermal ablation (RFA) for the treatment of incompetent varicose great saphenous veins (GSVs). The present report describes long-term follow-up at 5 years.MethodsThe 5-year follow-up of this multicentre European study included assessment of the Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS), and GSV occlusion and reflux on duplex imaging.ResultsA total of 225 patients had 295 GSVs treated by RFA, achieving an initial vein occlusion rate of 100 per cent. With 80·0 per cent compliance, Kaplan–Meier analyses showed a GSV occlusion rate of 91·9 per cent and a reflux-free rate of 94·9 per cent at 5 years. Among the 15 GSVs noted w…
Resonance frequency analysis-reliability in third generation instruments : Osstell mentor ®
2012
Few studies assess repeatability and reproducibility in registers of resonance frequency analysis (a value of dental implant stability). Objective: Few studies assess repeatability and reproducibility in resonance frequency analyses (implant stability evaluation). This study is aimed at assessing reliability (repeatabilty and reproducibility) in the Osstell Mentor® system using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) as the statistical method. Study Design: ISQ measurements of RFA were carried out by means of the Osstell Mentor ® instrument in 58 implants in 19 patients. Six measurements were performed on each implant by means of two different Smart-Pegs (I and II). Three consecutive m…
Primary spinal Burkitt’s lymphoma: Case report and literature review
2021
Background:Burkitt’s lymphoma is a non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma, occurring mostly in Equatorial Africa. According to the WHO, classification is three different variants: sporadic, endemic, and immunodeficient-associated. Here, we present a patient with “sporadic” primary epidural Burkitt’s lymphoma resulting in chronic low back pain (LBP).Case Description:A 63-year-old female presented with a 2-month history of LBP and the left lower extremity sciatica. The thoracolumbar MRI showed a L5 irregular, osteolytic epidural lesion that was hypointense on T1-weighted images, hyperintense on STIR studies, and inhomogeneously enhanced with contrast. Additional hypointense lesions were also seen at the…
Healon5 viscoadaptive formulation: Comparison to Healon and Healon GV
2001
Abstract Purpose To compare the rheological characteristics of a viscoadaptive viscoelastic formulation with those of 2 standard ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs). Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, and Max Planck-Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany. Methods An independent comparative study of 3 OVDs of sodium hyaluronate (Healon®, Healon GV®, and Healon®5) was performed using the Advanced Rheometric Expansion System to analyze rheologic behavior (eg, dynamic frequency dependence of the complex viscosity) as well as rheological parameters (eg, viscosity at zero shear rate, pseudoplasticity, relaxation time, elastic and viscous modulus). Resu…
High-Speed Video Microscopy for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Diagnosis: A Study of Ciliary Motility Variations with Time and Temperature
2021
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://www.mdpi.com/2075-4418/11/7/1301 Este artículo de investigación pertenece al número especial "Progress in Diagnosing and Managing Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia". Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare disease resulting from a defect in ciliary function that generates, among other issues, chronic upper and lower respiratory tract infections. European guidelines recommend studying ciliary function (pattern (CBP) and frequency (CBF)), together with characteristic clinical symptoms, as one of the definitive tests. However, there is no “gold standard”. The present study aims to use high-speed video microscopy to describe how CBF…
Effect of a Mediterranean Diet Intervention on Dietary Glycemic Load and Dietary Glycemic Index: The PREDIMED Study
2014
© 2014 Ana Isabel Rodríguez-Rejón et al. Objective. To compare the one year effect of two dietary interventions with MeDiet on GL and GI in the PREDIMED trial. Methods. Participants were older subjects at high risk for cardiovascular disease. This analysis included 2866 nondiabetic subjects. Diet was assessed with a validated 137-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). The GI of each FFQ item was assigned by a 5-step methodology using the International Tables of GI and GL Values. Generalized linear models were fitted to assess the relationship between the intervention group and dietary GL and GI at one year of follow-up, using control group as reference. Results. Multivariate-adjusted mode…
