It is evident that our technological society is undoubtedly linked to the diffusion of images. Authors such as Gottfried Boehm John Mitchell Hans Belting investigated the nature of the image by laying the foundations in the 1990s for the idea of a pictorial turn of a culture totally dominated by images that has now become a real technical possibility on global scale. A new statute of the image that is used to collect under the label of iconic turner inserted in the wider field of visual culture studies. The use of the term culture alongside that of visual is indicative of the breadth of the field of investigation that visual culture studies aim to seek: they do not want to limit themselves to ascertaining the predominance of the visual in contemporary society and an evaluation of its aesthetic component. but they want to proceed towards an anthropological research in which visual culture is analyzed as a particular lifestyle that expresses certain meanings and values not only in art and high culture but also in institutions and daily behavior. We will try to apply this new paradigm to photographs: instead of asking ourselves what the images mean let's try to ask ourselves what they want.

A Comparison and Survey of Finite Difference Methods for Pricing American Options Under Finite Activity Jump-Diffusion Models

2012

Partial-integro differential formulations are often used for pricing American options under jump-diffusion models. A survey on such formulations and numerical methods for them is presented. A detailed description of six efficient methods based on a linear complementarity formulation and finite difference discretizations is given. Numerical experiments compare the performance of these methods for pricing American put options under finite activity jump models.

Microscopic calculations of the hipernucleus λ5He

1993

Ground state results for the hypernucleus λ5He are reported. They have been calculated with a variatonal Jastrow-like trial wave function and also within the Diffusion Monte Carlo method. Simple central potential have been used to describe NN and λN interactions. The validity of the rigid core approximation is discussed. Mesure de la section efficace de l'électroproduction de photons à JLAB dans le but d'effectuer une Séparation Rosenbluth de la contribution DVCS

2014

The study of the inner structure of hadrons allows us to understand the nature of the interactions between partons, quarks and gluons, described by Quantum Chromodynamics. The elastic scattering reactions, which have been studied in order to measure the nucleon form factors, are included in this frame. The inelastic scattering reactions are also included in this frame, they allow us to obtain information about the nucleon structure thanks to the development of the parton distribution functions (PDFs). While through elastic scattering we can obtain information about the charge distribution of the nucleon, and hence, about the spatial distribution of the partons, through inelastic scattering …

First Results of the Testing of the Liquid Gallium Jet Limiter Concept for ISTTOK

2006

The use of liquid metals as plasma facing components in tokamaks has recently experienced a renewed interest stimulated by their advantages to the development of a fusion reactor. Liquid metals have been proposed to solve problems related to the erosion and neutronic activation of solid walls submitted to high power loads allowing an efficient heat exhaustion from fusion devices. Presently the most promising materials are Lithium and Gallium. ISTTOK, a small size tokamak, will be used to test the behavior of a liquid Gallium jet in the vacuum chamber and its influence on the plasma. This paper presents a description of the conceived setup as well as experimental results. The liquid Gallium …

Interaction of a liquid gallium jet with the tokamak ISTTOK edge plasma

2008

Abstract The interaction of a liquid gallium jet with plasma has been investigated in the tokamak ISTTOK. This paper presents a description of the conceived experimental setup, a detailed characterization of the produced jets and the first experimental results related to the gallium–plasma interaction. A stable jet has been obtained, which was not noticeably affected by magnetic field transients. ISTTOK has been successfully operated with the gallium jet without degradation of the discharge or a significant plasma contamination by liquid metal. This observation is supported by spectroscopic measurements showing that gallium radiation is limited to the region around the jet. Furthermore, the…

ESP for small scale wood combustion

2009

In this paper new ESP technology developed for fine particle processes are presented. The ESP is based on diffusion charging of particles using sonic jet charger. The ESP concept has been tested using a commercial 20kW wood pellet burner. The removal efficiency was measured to be 80% for submicron particles.

Phase dynamics in graphene-based Josephson junctions in the presence of thermal and correlated fluctuations

2014

In this work we study by numerical methods the phase dynamics in ballistic graphene-based short Josephson junctions. The supercurrent through a graphene junction shows a non-sinusoidal phase-dependence, unlike a conventional junction ruled by the well-known d.c. Josephson relation. A superconductor-graphene-superconductor system exhibits superconductive quantum metastable states similar to those present in normal current-biased JJs. We explore the effects of thermal and correlated fluctuations on the escape time from these metastable states, when the system is stimulated by an oscillating bias current. As a first step, the analysis is carried out in the presence of an external Gaussian whit…

Effect of boldine, secoboldine, and boldine methine on angiotensin II-induced neutrophil recruitment in vivo.

2005

AbstractAngiotensin-II (Ang-II) has inflammatory activity and is involved in different diseases associated with the cardiovascular system. This study has evaluated the effect of boldine (B), and two phenanthrene alkaloids semisynthesized by us, secoboldine (SB) and boldine methine (BM), on Ang-II-induced neutrophil recruitment. Intraperitoneal administration of 1 nM Ang-II induced significant neutrophil accumulation, which was maximal at 4–8 h. BM inhibited neutrophil infiltration into the peritoneal cavity at 4 h and 8 h by 73% and 77%, respectively, SB at 8 h by 55%, and B had no effect on this response. Although BM inhibited the release of cytokine-inducible neutrophil chemoattractant/ke…
