Dos supuestos testimonios del vino de Saguntum en Juvenal y en Frontón

2017

Although it has been believed Iuuenal V 24-49 and Fronto 134.23 ss. van den Hout (2nd ed.) do not probably refer to the Saguntum wine. Iuuenal appears to allude to Saguntine pottery, which proverbially was of low quality in the epigrammatic and satirical tradition. Fronto’s sentence would be one more example of confusion in the manuscript tradition between Saguntum and Zacynthos on the one hand, and Saguntinus and Zacynthius on the other.

In situ synthesis of lipopeptides as versatile receptors for the specific binding of nanoparticles and liposomes to solid-supported membranes.

2008

A detailed study of the in situ coupling of small peptides such as CGGH6 (H6) and CGWK8 (K8) to maleimide functionalized phospholipid bilayers is presented. Individually addressable microstructured membranes are employed to unequivocally probe the conjugation. The in situ coupling of peptides via a terminal cysteine moiety to maleimide functionalized phospholipids is shown to be a convenient and versatile way to selectively fabricate peptide-modified phospholipid bilayers serving as specific receptor platforms for functionalized vesicles and nanoparticles. Specific binding of functional vesicles to the peptide-modified bilayers is achieved by either histidine complexation with Ni-NTA-DOGS c…

Involvement of neuronal processes and nitric oxide in the inhibition by endotoxin of pentagastrin-stimulated sastric acid secretion

1994

Administration of E. coli endotoxin (1 mg kg-1, i.v.) abolished the acid response induced by the i.v. infusion of pentagastrin (8 micrograms kg-1 h-1) in the continuously perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. Local serosal application of tetrodotoxin (36 ng per rat) completely restored acid responses to pentagastrin in endotoxin-treated rats. However, pretreatment with atropine (0.5 mg kg-1, s.c.), capsaicin (20, 30, and 50 mg kg-1, s.c. 2 weeks before the study) or guanethidine (16 mg kg-1, s.c. 3 and 16h before) did not influence the inhibitory effects of endotoxin. Continuous i.v. infusion with NG-nitro arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10 mg kg-1 h-1) restored the secretory responses …

LTB4 is present in exudative pleural effusions and contributes actively to neutrophil recruitment in the inflamed pleural space

2004

SUMMARY The pleural space is a virtual compartment between the lung and chest wall that becomes filled with fluid and inflammatory cells during a variety of respiratory diseases. Here, we study the potential role of the eicosanoid metabolite leukotriene B4 (LTB4) in disparate diseases leading to acute (pneumonia) or chronic (tuberculosis, cancer) inflammation of the pleural space. LTB4 concentrations were significantly higher in pleural fluid due to pneumonia, tuberculosis and cancer with respect to congestive heart failure and correlated with neutrophil elastase, which is used as an indication of state of activation of neutrophils in the pleural space. Moreover, pleural LTB4 was biological…

Interaction of a Liquid Gallium Jet with ISTTOK Edge Plasmas

2008

The use of liquid metals as plasma facing components in tokamaks has recently experienced a renewed interest stimulated by their advantages in the development of a fusion reactor. Liquid metals have been proposed to solve problems related to the erosion and neutronic activation of solid walls submitted to high power loads allowing an efficient heat exhaust from fusion devices. Presently the most promising candidate materials are lithium and gallium. However, lithium has a short liquid state range when compared, for example, with gallium that has essentially better thermal properties and lower vapor pressure. To explore further these properties, ISTTOK tokamak is being used to test the inter…

Progress in the benchmark exercise for analyzing the lithiate breeder pebble bed thermo-mechanical behaviour

2006

The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) Blanket is one of the reference concepts for the European Breeding Blanket Programme for DEMO. In the reference blanket module, alternate layers of lithiated ceramics and beryllium pebbles act, respectively, as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier. The thermo-mechanical behaviour of both the pebble beds and their performances in reactor relevant conditions are also dependent on the pebble size and cell geometries (bed thickness, pebble packing factor, bed thermal conductivity). Therefore, in the EU Fusion Technology Programme, several out-of-pile experimental test campaigns have been performed to determine these behaviours. Theoretical calculations have…

Intravenous high-dose furosemide and hypertonic saline solutions for refractory heart failure and ascites.

2011

Several studies have shown the efficacy of hypertonic saline solution infusion in conditions in which regional organ blood flow is impaired. Our group has shown that treatment of patients with diuretic-resistant heart failure with high-dose furosemide plus hypertonic saline is effective and well tolerated, improving symptoms of congestion, reducing plasma levels of markers of neurohormonal and inflammatory activation, decreasing hospital readmission rates, and reducing long-term mortality. The same regimen was shown to be better than repeated paracentesis in patients with cirrhosis and refractory ascites, yielding better control of ascites, pleural effusions, and/or leg edema without an inc…

Non invasive blood flow measurement in cerebellum detects minimal hepatic encephalopathy earlier than psychometric tests

2013

AIM: To assess whether non invasive blood flow measurement by arterial spin labeling in several brain regions detects minimal hepatic encephalopathy. METHODS: Blood flow (BF) was analyzed by arterial spin labeling (ASL) in different brain areas of 14 controls, 24 cirrhotic patients without and 16 cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE). Images were collected using a 3 Tesla MR scanner (Achieva 3T-TX, Philips, Netherlands). Pulsed ASL was performed. Patients showing MHE were detected using the battery Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score (PHES) consisting of five tests. Different cognitive and motor functions were also assessed: alterations in selective attention we…

Triple therapy in treatment-experienced patients with HCV-cirrhosis in a multicentre cohort of the French Early Access Programme (ANRS CO20-CUPIC) – …

2013

International audience; Background & AimsIn phase III trials, the safety profile of triple therapy (pegylated interferon/ribavirin with boceprevir or telaprevir) seems to be similar in HCV treatment-experienced cirrhotic and non-cirrhotic patients, but few cirrhotics were included. We report the week 16 safety and efficacy analysis in a cohort of compensated cirrhotics treated in the French Early Access Programme.Methods674 genotype 1 patients, prospectively included, received 48 weeks of triple therapy. The analysis is restricted to 497 patients reaching week 16.ResultsA high incidence of serious adverse events (40.0%), and of death and severe complications (severe infection or hepatic dec…
