A new application for nickel foam in alkaline fuel cells

The use of nickel foam as an electrode substrate in alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) has been investigated for bi-polar cells incorporating an electrically conducting gas diffusion layer. This contribution focuses on the cathode, and draws comparisons between nickel foam and nickel mesh substrates. One of the principal electrocatalysts for the cathodic reduction of oxygen is silver, so an improvement in electrochemical performance was obtained by electroplating the nickel foam with silver. The electrodeposition process was optimised to maximise electrochemical performance with a minimum of silver deposited. Domain formation in monolayers

For phospholipids at the air/water interface we demonstrate that molecular chirality in some, but not in all, cases influences the domain shapes. In other cases chirality in the head group region can cause a chiral structure considering the tail arrangement. This indicates head group ordering. Minute changes of the molecular structure may change domain morphology from circular to dendritic. This can be related to slight changes of the lattice structure. In case of a dendritic domain the chains are more tilted, the deviation from hexagonal symmetry is more pronounced, and hence the lattice anisotropy is larger. Successful treatment of paraquat poisoning: activated charcoal per os and "continuous hemoperfusion".

AbstractIngestion of paraquat results in an extremely dangerous poisoning. The first aim is to clear the gastrointestinal tract by inducing emesis and performing gastric/gut lavage; as much activated charcoal as possible should be administered per os and as quickly as possible. The best measure to eliminate paraquat from blood and tissue is hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal; it has to be performed in the sense of “continuous hemoperfusion” about 8 h/d over a period of 2–3 weeks. These measures give a chance to lower the lethality of paraquat poisoning.

Influence of oxide substrates on monolayer graphene doping process by thermal treatments in oxygen

Abstract The structural and the electronic properties of monolayer graphene made by chemical vapor deposition and transferred on various oxide substrates ( SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , and HfO 2 ) are investigated by Raman Spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy in order to highlight the influence of the substrate on the features of p-doping obtained by O 2 thermal treatments. By varing the treatment temperature up to 400 °C, the distribution of the reaction sites of the substrates is evaluated. Influence of radiation defects on tritium release parameters from Li2O

Abstract The study of the influence of radiation defects on tritium release behavior from polycrystalline Li2O was performed by simultaneous measurements of the luminescence emission and tritium release. It was found that the radiation defects in Li2O introduced by electron irradiation cause the retention of tritium. It is thought that the tritium recovery is affected by the formation of a Li–T bond, which is tolerant of high temperatures. The retardation of tritium decreases with increasing absorbed dose in the dose range from 50 to 140 MGy. Formation and characterization of oxidic and metallic Fe/Ni multilayers prepared from Langmuir-Blodgett films

Oxidic and metallic iron, nickel, and mixed iron/nickel mono- and multilayers were prepared by some treatments of iron- and nickel-containing Langmuir-Blodgett films. The layers were characterized by several surface-sensitive methods. Interactions between the iron and the nickel could be observed. The results are different to those obtained from disordered bulk alloys and from simple diffusion calculations.

Search for Neutrons as Evidence of Cold Fusion

In this paper investigations performed at the University of Palermo in an attempt to reproduce the cold fusion experiment are reported. The search was devoted to detecting neutron emission from palladium electrodes electrolytically charged with deuterium. In no test was neutron emission significantly over the background observed, either in bursts or continuous. Results of a few tests are reported. For the more sensitive test, an upper limit for D(d,n) cold fusion (at 98% confidence level) of {lambda}{sub f} {lt} 3.6 {times} 10{sup {minus}24} fusion/s {center dot} d-d pair is determined.

Water Fluxes in Polymeric Membranes for Desalination via Membrane Distillation

Membrane distillation is an emerging technique for seawater desalination. Hydrophobic polymeric membranes are used to separate the solute‐free water vapour from the hot solution. Vapour fluxes of commercial polymeric membranes were measured in various conditions, i.e. natural and forced convection and vacuum. Vapour fluxes were also predicted with models and compared with experimentals. Higher fluxes were recorded in vacuum conditions.
