Insight into Disrupted Spatial Patterns of Human Connectome in Alzheimer’s Disease via Subgraph Mining

2012

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of age-related dementia, which prominently affects the human connectome. In this paper, the authors focus on the question how they can identify disrupted spatial patterns of the human connectome in AD based on a data mining framework. Using diffusion tractography, the human connectomes for each individual subject were constructed based on two diffusion derived attributes: fiber density and fractional anisotropy, to represent the structural brain connectivity patterns. After frequent subgraph mining, the abnormal score was finally defined to identify disrupted subgraph patterns in patients. Experiments demonstrated that our data-driven approa…

Discovering Aberrant Patterns of Human Connectome in Alzheimer's Disease via Subgraph Mining

2012

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of age-related dementia, which prominently affects the human connectome. Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) provides a promising way to explore the organization of white matter fiber tracts in the human brain in a non-invasive way. However, the immense amount of data from millions of voxels of a raw diffusion map prevent an easy way to utilizable knowledge. In this paper, we focus on the question how we can identify disrupted spatial patterns of the human connectome in AD based on a data mining framework. Using diffusion tractography, the human connectomes for each individual subject were constructed based on two diffusion derived attributes: …

Mobile phone based laser speckle contrast imager for assessment of skin blood flow

2014

Assessment of skin blood flow is of interest for evaluation of skin viability as well as for reflection of the overall condition of the circulatory system. Laser Doppler perfusion imaging (LDPI) and laser speckle contrast imaging (LASCI) are optical techniques used for assessment of skin perfusion. However, these systems are still too expensive and bulky to be widely available. Implementation of such techniques as connection kits for mobile phones have a potential for primary diagnostics. In this work we demonstrate simple and low cost LASCI connection kit for mobile phone and its comparison to laser Doppler perfusion imager. Post-occlusive hyperemia and local thermal hyperemia tests are us…

Automated Uncertainty Quantification Through Information Fusion in Manufacturing Processes

2017

International audience; Evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs) such as energy consumption is essential for decision-making during the design and operation of smart manufacturing systems. The measurements of KPIs are strongly affected by several uncertainty sources such as input material uncertainty, the inherent variability in the manufacturing process, model uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the sensor measurements of operational data. A comprehensive understanding of the uncertainty sources and their effect on the KPIs is required to make the manufacturing processes more efficient. Towards this objective, this paper proposed an automated methodology to generate a hierarchical B…

Evaluation of the registration of temporal series of contrast-enhanced perfusion magnetic resonance 3D images of the liver.

2011

The registration of 2D and 3D images is one of the key tasks in medical image processing and analysis. Accurate registration is a crucial preprocessing step for many tasks; consequently, the evaluation of its accuracy becomes necessary. Unfortunately, this is a difficult task, especially when no golden pattern (true result) is available and when the signal values may have changed between successive images to be registered. This is the case this paper deals with: we have a series of 3D images, magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the liver and adjacent areas that have to be registered. They have been taken while a contrast is diffused through the liver tissue, so intensity of each observed poi…

Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos Through Optical Flow

2021

Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed. The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it to register one view onto the other both geometrically …

Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging in the Diffusion Imaging in Python Project

2021

ABSTRACTDiffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) measurements and models provide information about brain connectivity and are sensitive to the physical properties of tissue microstructure. Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging (DKI) quantifies the degree of non-Gaussian diffusion in biological tissue from dMRI. These estimates are of interest because they were shown to be more sensitive to microstructural alterations in health and diseases than measures based on the total anisotropy of diffusion which are highly confounded by tissue dispersion and fiber crossings. In this work, we implemented DKI in the Diffusion in Python (DIPY) project - a large collaborative open-source project which …

"Islands of Innovation" and "School-Wide Implementations" : Two Patterns of ICT-Based Pedagogical Innovations in Schools

2005

The study reported here is a secondary analysis of data collected in 10 schools as part of Israel’s participation in two international studies: IEA’s SITES Module 2, focusing on innovative pedagogical practices at the classroom level, and the OECD/CERI case studies of ICT and organizational innovation, focusing on ICT-related innovations at the school system level. We identify and analyze two patterns of ICT-based curricular innovations: “islands of innovation” and “school-wide implementations.” In the analysis of both patterns we focus on (a) the levels and domains of innovation reached in schools; (b) the communication agents and school variables affecting the diffusion of the innovation;…

Quantum Monte Carlo study of high pressure solid molecular hydrogen

2013

We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method to calculate the ground state phase diagram of solid molecular hydrogen and examine the stability of the most important insulating phases relative to metallic crystalline molecular hydrogen. We develop a new method to account for finite-size errors by combining the use of twist-averaged boundary conditions with corrections obtained using the Kwee-Zhang-Krakauer (KZK) functional in density functional theory. To study band-gap closure and find the metallization pressure, we perform accurate quasi-particle many-body calculations using the $GW$ method. In the static approximation, our DMC simulations indicate a transition from the insulating…

Structure and transport properties of amorphous aluminium silicates: computer simulation studies

2005

The structure and transport properties of SiO2-Al2O3 melts containing 13 mol% and 47 mol% Al2O3 are investigated by means of large scale molecular dynamics computer simulations. The interactions between the atoms are modelled by a pair potential which is a modified version of the one proposed by Kramer et al. [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 64, 6435 (1991)]. Fully equilibrated melts in the temperature range 6000 K >= T > 2000 K are considered as well as glass configurations, that were obtained by a rapid quench from the lowest melt temperatures. Each system is simulated at two different densities in order to study the effect of pressure on structural and dynamic properties. We find that the Al ato…
