Over the Cuckoo’s Nest : Towards a Nordic Model of the Responsible University?

2019

AbstractThis concluding chapter takes stock of the major elements, both empirical and conceptual, that underpin the case chapters presented in the book. The chapter is organised in three distinct sections. First, addressing a largely scientific audience, the chapter attempts to make conceptual sense of the findings from an organisational theory perspective. Second, it shifts focus to the wider community of practitioners (policy makers, advisers, university managers and administrators, etc.) by shedding light on the practical implications of the volume’s core findings for both policy and practice. Third, the chapter once again addresses an academic audience by sketching out the road ahead re…

The Role of the Internet in Overcoming Information Barriers: Implications for Exporting SMEs of the East African Community

2012

Small and medium-sized enterprises play a significant role in the East African Community, contributing highly to the national income and employing a significant number of people. Exportation provides a great opportunity for these enterprises to expand their businesses and improve their performance. However, they encounter a number of information- related barriers before and during exportation. Based on literature, this paper identifies these barriers and discusses how the internet could be used to reduce them. Based on the internet, international business and small business literature, the paper provides propositions and develops a model that will be useful for future studies in this area.

Barriers to open e-learning in public administrations

2016

Abstract This article presents a comparative study of the barriers to open e-learning in public administrations in Luxembourg, Germany, Montenegro and Ireland. It discusses the current state of open e-learning of public administration employees at the local government level and derives the barriers to such learning. This paper's main contribution is its presentation of an empirical set of barriers in the four European countries. The results allow informed assumptions about which barriers will arise in the forthcoming use of open-source e-learning technology, particularly open educational resources as means of learning. Furthermore, this study offers a contextualised barrier framework that a…

Futuro passato

2021

The volume propose a collection that reflects on what an event is and in what how temporality is schematized, so as to make it humanly understandable, manageable, thinkable. Covid-19 was, in this sense, just a great accelerator, a particularly caseinteresting about "temporal subversion".

Hedging effectiveness of European wheat futures markets

2014

The instability of commodity prices and the hypothesis that speculative behaviour was one of its causes has brought renewed interest in futures markets. In this paper, the hedging effectiveness of European and US wheat futures markets were studied to test whether they were affected by the high price instability after 2007. Implicitly, this is a test of whether the increasing presence of speculation in futures markets have made them divorced from the physical markets. A multivariate GARCH model was applied to compute optimal hedging ratios. No important evidence was found of a change in the effectiveness of hedging after 2007.

Exploring the Future of Universities Through Experimental Foresight

2020

Throughout 2018/2019, The Futures Lab, Inc. (TFL) was commissioned to undertake a comprehensive foresight study on the potential futures for universities in Norway. For the most part, the project followed the full, TFL comprehensive six-stage foresight process and a number of customized approaches that leveraged the specificities of the Norwegian Education System. The foresight project covered two future time horizons, namely 2025 to 2030 and 2031 to 2040. Rather than focus here on the Future of the University project itself, this paper considers five experimental foresight methods that produced an extra edge to the creative inputs to this project and delivered some unexpected and critical …

Future 0,0,0. Urban/human futures

2014

“Futurus” in Latin is the future participle (!) of the verb to be, then, we literally translate it into “what will be” and, in the classical ontology of the pre-Socratic period, being does not derive from the Man who scratches time and bends the path of history producing effects reduced to the tickle done to a pachyderm. Will the future, then, inexorably be independent from the human will? Not necessarily. the futures If we try to distinguish the future as the time line that goes to infinity as a positive future like a projection of human action in time, two views will come out: a static view - far in the coordinates x, y, t - and a dynamic vision which tends to reach a point of coordinates…

FUTURE IS BACK

2017

What motivates the adoption of green restaurant products and services? A systematic review and future research agenda

2021

Issues regarding green restaurants have received significant scholarly and practitioner attention in the last decade, particularly concerning why consumers adopt green restaurants. Although several reviews exist on green hospitality, a comprehensive review of the literature on consumers' green restaurant adoption is currently lacking. The following systematic literature review examines 50 research studies published on the consumer adoption of green restaurant services to address this gap accordingly. Through a detailed content analysis, the research profile and thematic analysis are presented. The review further identifies four key thematic foci: (a) consumer behavior variables studied, (b)…

Speculative and hedging activities in the European Carbon Market

2015

Abstract We explore the dynamics of the speculative and hedging activities in European futures carbon markets by using volume and open interest data. A comparison of the three phases in the European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) reveals that (i) Phase II of the EU ETS seems to be the most speculative phase to date and (ii) the highest degree of speculative activity for every single phase occurs at the moment of listing the contracts for the first time. A seasonality analysis identifies a higher level of speculation in the first quarter of each year, related to the schedule of deadlines of the EU ETS. In addition, a time series analysis confirms that most of the speculative activity…
