Cardiovascular disease in primary sjögren’s syndrome

2018

Background A close relationship between rheumatic diseases and cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported, accounting for the higher mortality and morbidity observed in these patients. In the last years, it has been clearly reported that patients affected by primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) experienced an increased risk of CVD. Objective This review aimed at investigating CVD, traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and possible targeted therapeutic strategies in pSS patients. Method Available literature concerning CV risk factors in pSS patients has been selected and discussed. Conclusion Disease-related characteristics and traditional CV risk factors contribute to observed athero…

Cluster headache in relation to different age groups

2019

Cluster headache (CH) has always been considered a type of primary headache affecting predominantly male subjects in early and medium adulthood. However, recent studies carried out in large case series of patients with CH show that not infrequently it may set in also after age 50; by contrast, onset before adolescence is very rare. Additionally, when onset occurs before age 14 or from the sixth decade of life onward, male predominance decreases to the point that in chronic forms CH predominantly affects the female sex. This particular pattern of the gender ratio in relation to onset in different age groups suggests that hormonal factors may actually play a role in the genesis of CH. In part…

Utilizing nutritional genomics to tailor diets for the prevention of cardiovascular disease: a guide for upcoming studies and implementations.

2017

Introduction: Personalized diets based on an individual’s genome to optimize the success of dietary intervention and reduce genetic cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, is one of the challenges most frequently discussed in the scientific community. Areas covered: The authors gathered literature-based evidence on nutritional genomics and CVD phenotypes, our own results and research experience to provide a critical overview of the current situation of using nutritional genomics to tailor diets for CVD prevention and to propose guidelines for future studies and implementations. Expert commentary: Hundreds of studies on gene-diet interactions determining CVD intermediate (plasma lipids, hypertens…

Basic self-reports as an indicator of physical activity

2016

Introduction: Basic self-reports of physical activity (PA) has been applied by clinicians to identify whether adolescents with asthma are physically active. Aim: To investigate whether basic self-reports of PA in adolescents with and without asthma can be used as an indicator of PA with objective measures as criterion. Methods: One-hundred-and sixty (99 boys) adolescents (mean age 13.5 yrs) with (n=88) and without (n=72) asthma completed recordings of PA for three consecutive week-days and one weekend-day using the SenseWear TM Pro 2 Armband (BodyMedia Inc., Pittsburgh, PA). Cut off point defining moderate to vigorous intensity PA (MVPA) was 3 metabolic equivalents. Self-reported PA was ass…

Modern Strategies in the Prevention of Implant-Associated Infections

2005

The application of medical devices either for temporary or permanent use has become an indispensible part of almost all fields of medicine. However, foreign bodies are associated with a substantial risk of bacterial and fungal infections. Implant-associated infections significantly contribute to the still increasing problem of nosocomial infections. To reduce the incidence of such infections, specific guidelines providing evidence-based recommendations and comprising both technological and nontechnological strategies for prevention have been established. Strict adherence to hygienic rules during insertion or implantation of the device are aspects of particular importance. Besides such basi…

Dimensional analysis of the upper airway in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome patients treated with mandibular advancement device: A bi‐ and three‐di…

2020

BACKGROUND The efficiency of the mandibular advancement device (MAD) in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) has been demonstrated. Nevertheless, the behaviour of the upper airway once MAD is placed and titrated, and its correlation with the apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) is still under discussion. OBJECTIVES To analyse the morphological changes of the upper airway through a bi- and three-dimensional study and correlate it with the polysomnographic variable, AHI. METHODS Patients were recruited from two different hospitals for the treatment of OSAS with a custom-made MAD. A cone-beam computer tomography and a polysomnography were performed at baseline and once the MAD was ti…

Event-related potentials to unattended changes in facial expressions: detection of regularity violations or encoding of emotions?

2013

Visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), a component in event-related potentials (ERPs), can be elicited when rarely presented “deviant” facial expressions violate regularity formed by repeated “standard” faces. vMMN is observed as differential ERPs elicited between the deviant and standard faces. It is not clear, however, whether differential ERPs to rare emotional faces interspersed with repeated neutral ones reflect true vMMN (i.e., detection of regularity violation) or merely encoding of the emotional content in the faces. Furthermore, a face-sensitive N170 response, which reflects structural encoding of facial features, can be modulated by emotional expressions. Owing to its similar latency …

Salesperson adoption and usage of mobile sales configuration tools

2018

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine salespersons’ adoption and usage of mobile sales configuration tools (MSCT) and to identify areas for further development in this realm. Another objective is to offer a conceptualization of MSCT adoption.Design/methodology/approachFor this purpose, a qualitative case study approach was selected as the research method to better understand acceptance of a mobile configuration tool used by business-to-business (B2B) salespersons. Primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews, which included a series of open-ended questions to gain more detailed and contextual data.FindingsThe results obtained from the interviews indicated several …

Shared socioeconomic pathways for climate change research in Finland: co-developing extended SSP narratives for agriculture

2021

AbstractShared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), developed at global scale, comprise narrative descriptions and quantifications of future world developments that are intended for climate change scenario analysis. However, their extension to national and regional scales can be challenging. Here, we present SSP narratives co-developed with stakeholders for the agriculture and food sector in Finland. These are derived from intensive discussions at a workshop attended by approximately 39 participants offering a range of sectoral perspectives. Using general background descriptions of the SSPs for Europe, facilitated discussions were held in parallel for each of four SSPs reflecting very different c…

Miasto przyszłości na tle koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju

2017

Isto…
