Size of the accretion disk in the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS J1004+4112 from the statistics of microlensing magnifications
2016
We present eight monitoring seasons of the four brightest images of the gravitational lens SDSS J1004+4112 observed between December 2003 and October 2010. Using measured time delays for the images A, B and C and the model predicted time delay for image D we have removed the intrinsic quasar variability, finding microlensing events of about 0.5 and 0.7 mag of amplitude in the images C and D. From the statistics of microlensing amplitudes in images A, C, and D, we have inferred the half-light radius (at {\lambda} rest = 2407 {\AA}) for the accretion disk using two different methods, $R_{1/2}=8.7^{+18.5}_{-5.5} \sqrt{M/0.3 M_\odot}$ (histograms product) and $R_{1/2} = 4.2^{+3.2}_{-2.2} \sqrt{…
Dynamics of magnetized relativistic tori oscillating around black holes
2007
We present a numerical study of the dynamics of magnetized, relativistic, non-self-gravitating, axisymmetric tori orbiting in the background spacetimes of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. The initial models have a constant specific angular momentum and are built with a non-zero toroidal magnetic field component, for which equilibrium configurations have recently been obtained. In this work we extend our previous investigations which dealt with purely hydrodynamical thick discs, and study the dynamics of magnetized tori subject to perturbations which, for the values of the magnetic field strength considered here, trigger quasi-periodic oscillations lasting for tens of orbital periods. Ove…
Shell-like structures in our cosmic neighbourhood
2016
Signatures of the processes in the early Universe are imprinted in the cosmic web. Some of them may define shell-like structures characterised by typical scales. We search for shell-like structures in the distribution of nearby rich clusters of galaxies drawn from the SDSS DR8. We calculate the distance distributions between rich clusters of galaxies, and groups and clusters of various richness, look for the maxima in the distance distributions, and select candidates of shell-like structures. We analyse the space distribution of groups and clusters forming shell walls. We find six possible candidates of shell-like structures, in which galaxy clusters have maxima in the distance distribution…
Recent Type II Radio Supernovae
2007
We present the results of radio observations, taken primarily with the Very Large Array, of Supernovae 1993J, 2001gd, 2001em, 2002hh, 2004dj, and 2004et. We have fit a parameterized model to the multi-frequency observations of each supernova. We compare the observed and derived radio properties of these supernovae by optical classification and discuss the implications.
On the universality of void density profiles
2014
The massive exploitation of cosmic voids for precision cosmology in the upcoming dark energy experiments, requires a robust understanding of their internal structure, particularly of their density profile. We show that the void density profile is insensitive to the void radius both in a catalogue of observed voids and in voids from a large cosmological simulation. However, the observed and simulated voids display remarkably different profile shapes, with the former having much steeper profiles than the latter. Sparsity can not be the main reason for this discrepancy, as we demonstrate that the profile can be recovered with reasonable accuracy even with very sparse samples of tracers. On the…
Multimodality of rich clusters from the SDSS DR8 within the supercluster-void network
2012
We study the relations between the multimodality of galaxy clusters drawn from the SDSS DR8 and the environment where they reside. As cluster environment we consider the global luminosity density field, supercluster membership, and supercluster morphology. We use 3D normal mixture modelling, the Dressler-Shectman test, and the peculiar velocity of cluster main galaxies as signatures of multimodality of clusters. We calculate the luminosity density field to study the environmental densities around clusters, and to find superclusters where clusters reside. We determine the morphology of superclusters with the Minkowski functionals and compare the properties of clusters in superclusters of dif…
High X-Ray Luminosity from Dynamo Stars
1981
In the present work we intend to show that a stellar dynamo mechanism can produce high X-ray luminosities and also give account for modulation periods of the order thousand seconds or larger.
Models and Astrophysical Parameters of High Mass X-ray Binaries
1996
The objective of this work is the High Mass X-ray Binaries. These systems consist of a neutron star orbiting around a star of spectral type OB. According to the luminosity class of the optical companion they split into Supergiant X-ray binaries and Be/X-ray systems. In both systems the high energy radiation is due to the accretion phenomenum, but in the first case the accreted metter comes from the strong stellar wind of the primary and in the second case it comes from the circumstellar envelope surrounding the Be star equator. In this work I concentrate on the optical and infrared bands of the electromagnetic spectrum although a discussion of the X-ray characteristics for some systems is a…
A method to constrain the neutron star magnetic field in Low Mass X-ray Binaries
2005
We describe here a method to put an upper limit to the strength of the magnetic field of neutron stars in low mass X‐ray binaries for which the spin period and the X‐ray luminosity during X‐ray quiescent periods are known. This is obtained using simple considerations about the position of the magnetospheric radius during quiescent periods. We applied this method to the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4‐3658, which shows coherent X‐ray pulsations at a frequency of ∼ 400 Hz and a quiescent X‐ray luminosity of ∼ 5 × 1031 ergs/s, and found that B ⩽ 5 × 108 Gauss in this source. Combined with the lower limit inferred from the presence of X‐ray pulsations, this constrains the SAX J1808.4‐3…
VLBI Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Galaxies. VII. Study of the FR I Sources 3C 31, 4C 35.03, and 3C 264
1997
We present results from global VLBI and VLA observations of three FanaroU-Riley type I radio gal- axies, 3C 31, 4C 35.03, and 3C 264, at a frequency of 5 GHz. In all three cases, we observe asymmetric parsec-scale structures consisting of a compact core and a single jet pointing in the direction of the more prominent kiloparsec jet. We interpret such alignment as evidence for the relativistic nature of FR I radio jets at parsec scales. Comparing the VLBI and VLA images of these sources, we —nd a progressive deceleration of the plasma —ow from parsec to kiloparsec scales. We consider another —ve FR I radio galaxies studied previously by us and —nd that, in a set of eight FR I objects, the es…
