Tidal gravity observations at Mt. Etna and Stromboli: Results concerning the modeled and observed tidal factors

2009

Continuous gravity observations performed in the last few years, both at Mt. Etna and Stromboli, have prompted the need to improve the tidal analysis in order to acquire the best corrected data for the detection of volcano related signals. On Mt. Etna, the sites are very close to each other and the expected tidal factor differences are negligible. It is thus useful to unify the tidal analysis results of the different data sets in a unique tidal model. This tidal model, which can be independently confirmed by a modeling of the tidal parameters based on the elastic response of the Earth to tidal forces and the computation of the ocean tides effects on gravity, is very useful for the precise t…

HAWC J2227+610 and its association with G106.3+2.7, a new potential Galactic PeVatron

2020

We present the detection of VHE gamma-ray emission above 100 TeV from HAWC J2227+610 with the HAWC observatory. Combining our observations with previously published results by VERITAS, we interpret the gamma-ray emission from HAWC J2227+610 as emission from protons with a lower limit in their cutoff energy of 800 TeV. The most likely source of the protons is the associated supernova remnant G106.3+2.7, making it a good candidate for a Galactic PeVatron. However, a purely leptonic origin of the observed emission cannot be excluded at this time.

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Dynamics of ionized and neutral gas in the Lagoon nebula (M 8)

2017

Aims. We present a spectroscopic study of the dynamics of the ionized and neutral gas throughout the Lagoon nebula (M 8), using VLT-FLAMES data from the Gaia-ESO Survey. The new data permit exploration of the physical connections between the nebular gas and the stellar population of the associated star cluster NGC 6530. Methods. We characterized through spectral fitting emission lines of Hα, [N II] and [S II] doublets, [O III], and absorption lines of sodium D doublet, using data from the FLAMES-Giraffe and UVES spectrographs, on more than 1000 sightlines toward the entire face of the Lagoon nebula. Gas temperatures are derived from line-width comparisons, densities from the [S II] doublet …

Gaia-ESO Survey: Gas dynamics in the Carina nebula through optical emission lines

2016

Aims. We present observations from the Gaia-ESO Survey in the lines of Hα, [N II], [S II], and He I of nebular emission in the central part of the Carina nebula. Methods. We investigate the properties of the two already known kinematic components (approaching and receding), which account for the bulk of emission. Moreover, we investigate the features of the much less known low-intensity high-velocity (absolute RV >50 km s) gas emission. Results. We show that gas giving rise to Hα and He I emission is dynamically well correlated with but not identical to gas seen through forbidden-line emission. Gas temperatures are derived from line-width ratios, and densities from [S II] doublet ratios. Th…

A search for anisotropy in the arrival directions of ultra high energy cosmic rays recorded at the Pierre Auger Observatory

2012

Observations of cosmic ray arrival directions made with the Pierre Auger Observatory have previously provided evidence of anisotropy at the 99% CL using the correlation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) with objects drawn from the Véron-Cetty Véron catalog. In this paper we report on the use of three catalog independent methods to search for anisotropy. The 2pt–L, 2pt+ and 3pt methods, each giving a different measure of selfclustering in arrival directions, were tested on mock cosmic ray data sets to study the impacts of sample size and magnetic smearing on their results, accounting for both angular and energy resolutions. If the sources of UHECRs follow the same large scale structu…

Solvent impact on the planarity and aromaticity of free and monohydrated zinc phthalocyanine: a theoretical study

2017

A theoretical investigation on the planarity of molecular structure of zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) and its aromaticity has been performed using B3LYP and M06-2X density functionals combined with selected Pople-type basis sets. The effect of the applied calculation method on the optimized structure of ZnPc and ZnPc∙∙∙H2O, both in the gas phase and in the polar solvent, was analyzed. To quantify the aromaticity of the ZnPc and ZnPc∙∙∙H2O complexes, both the geometric and magnetic criteria, i.e., Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA) index and the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) values at the centers or 1 A above the centers of structural subunits, were calculated. The energ…

Laboratory unraveling of matter accretion in young stars

2017

When matter accretes onto a young star, a shell of dense material can form around the impact, reducing its x-ray emission.

Rational normal curves and Hadamard products

2021

AbstractGiven $$r>n$$ r > n general hyperplanes in $$\mathbb P^n,$$ P n , a star configuration of points is the set of all the n-wise intersection of the hyperplanes. We introduce contact star configurations, which are star configurations where all the hyperplanes are osculating to the same rational normal curve. In this paper, we find a relation between this construction and Hadamard products of linear varieties. Moreover, we study the union of contact star configurations on a same conic in $$\mathbb P^2$$ P 2 , we prove that the union of two contact star configurations has a special h-vector and, in some cases, this is a complete intersection.

Communication: Rotational excitation of interstellar heavy water by hydrogen molecules

2010

Cross sections and rate coefficients for low lying rotational transitions in D(2)O induced by para-H(2) collisions are presented for the first time. Calculations have been performed at the close-coupling level with the deuterated variant of the H(2)O-H(2) interaction potential of Valiron et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 129, 134306 (2008)]. Rate coefficients are presented for temperatures between 1 and 30 K and are compared to the corresponding rate coefficients for H(2)O. Significant differences caused by the isotopic substitution are observed and are attributed to both kinematics and intramolecular geometry effects. Astrophysical implications are briefly discussed in view of the very recent detecti…
