Abstract Background Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is a proline selective serine protease that is overexpressed in tumor stroma and in lesions of many other diseases that are characterized by tissue remodeling. In 2014, a most potent FAP-inhibitor (referred to as UAMC1110) with low nanomolar FAP-affinity and high selectivity toward related enzymes such as prolyl oligopeptidase (PREP) and the dipeptidyl-peptidases (DPPs): DPP4, DPP8/9 and DPP2 were developed. Electrical manipulation of magnetism via spin-orbit torques (SOTs) promises efficient spintronic devices. In systems comprising magnetic insulators and heavy metals, SOTs have started to be investigated only recently, especially in systems with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). Here, we quantitatively study the SOT efficiency and iDMI in a series of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) / thulium iron garnet (TmIG) / platinum (Pt) heterostructures with varying TmIG and Pt thicknesses. Photoelectron spectroscopy of thin discontinuous metal films deposited onto a sapphire substrate

Abstract The charging of small metallic clusters forming discontinuous gold and gallium films, condensed in vacuum onto an insulating substrate (sapphire), was experimentally studied by the method of ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) for a photon energy of 5.4 eV. It seems that the charging is due to electron emission as well as to electron transfer from metal islands to the empty electron states in the metal-insulator interface.

Tight-binding study of the optical properties of GaN/AlN polar and nonpolar quantum wells

The electronic structure of wurtzite semiconductor superlattices (SLs) and quantum wells (QWs) is calculated by using the empirical tight-binding method. The basis used consists of four orbitals per atom (sp3 model), and the calculations include the spin-orbit coupling as well as the strain and electric polarization effects. We focus our study on GaN/AlN QWs wells grown both in polar (C) and nonpolar (A) directions. The band structure, wave functions and optical absorption spectrum are obtained and compared for both cases.

Recent reports have claimed a superior performance of HEPES buffer in comparison to alternative buffer systems for 67/68 Ga labeling in aqueous media. In this paper we report spectroscopic (1H and 71 Ga NMR), radiochemical, mass spectrometry and theoretical modeling studies on the Ga3+/HEPES system (HEPES = N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N′-2-ethanesulfonic acid) performed with the aim of elucidating a potential contribution of HEPES in the 68/67 Ga radiolabeling process. Our results demonstrate that HEPES acts as a weakly but competitive chelator of Ga3+ and that this interaction depends on the relative Ga3+: HEPES concentration. Prevalence of biliary lithiasis in the elderly people of a small town in Sicily

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of biliary lithiasis (BL) and its major associated factors in the elderly people of a small town in Sicily. All inhabitants over the age of 65 were interviewed and underwent a general physical examination, blood tests and ultrasonography of the gallbladder and biliary tracts. The final group included 328 subjects (162 men and 166 women), representing 63.1% of the population asked to participate, with a mean age of 74.3 +/- 6.8 years (range 65-95). The prevalence of BL (lithiasis in progress + subjects cholecystectomized for previous calculosis) was 18.6%. No male subject had been cholecystectomized. Prevalence was higher in women …

Communities of symbiotic microorganisms that colonize the gastrointestinal tract play an important role in food digestion and protection against opportunistic microbes. Diet diversity increases the number of symbionts in the intestines, a benefit that is considered to impose no cost for the host organism.
