Whispering-gallery modes resonances of submicron wall thickness capillaries exhibit very large wavelength shifts as a function of the refractive index of the medium that fills the inside. The sensitivity to refractive index changes is larger than in other optical microcavities as microspheres, microdisks and microrings. The outer surface where total internal reflection takes place remains always in air, enabling the measure of refractive index values higher than the refractive index of the capillary material. Interrogation of whispering-gallery modes resonances in cylindrical microcavities by backreflection detection

The excitation of whispering-gallery-mode resonances of cylindrical microcavities, using narrow fiber tapers, produces simultaneously the excitation of spiral modes. The power coupled to the spiral modes leads to a significant broadening of the dips observed in the spectrum of light transmitted through the taper. We demonstrate that whispering-gallery modes resonances of cylindrical microcavities can also be interrogated by measuring the reflection spectrum. Unlike the dips observed in transmission, the peaks in the reflection spectrum are symmetric and narrower than the corresponding transmission dips.

Tässä artikkelissa otamme erityiseen tarkasteluun Gallen-Kallela Museon Afrikka-kokoelman näyttelyhistorian ja pohdimme, miten museo on kokoelmaa esittäessään osallistunut kolonialistisen kuvaston tuottamiseen ja uudelleen tulkitsemiseen. Artikkeli on kokonaisuudessaan ensimmäinen laatuaan Suomessa ja se esittelee tutkimuksen tuloksia koskien Akseli Gallen-Kallelan käyttämiä väriaineita. Tutkimusaineisto on läpileikkaus taiteilijan taiteellisesta tuotannosta vuosilta 1880–1929.  Se koostuu 265:stä maalauksesta ja 83:sta öljy- ja temperavärituubista. Tutkimuksessa käytetyt analyysimentelmät ovat ainetta tuhoamattomia luonnontieteellisiä analyysimenetelmiä: energiadispersiivinen röntgenfluoresenssi spektroskopia (EDXRF) ja polarisaatiomikroskopia (PLM).

An all-organic waveguide sensor for volatile solver detecting was presented. Device consists of SU-8 waveguide with novel organic material used as sensitive cladding. Created device was tested in isopropanol and N2 vapor mixture.

Communities of symbiotic microorganisms that colonize the gastrointestinal tract play an important role in food digestion and protection against opportunistic microbes. Diet diversity increases the number of symbionts in the intestines, a benefit that is considered to impose no cost for the host organism. However, less is known about the possible immunological investments that hosts have to make in order to control the infections caused by symbiont populations that increase due to diet diversity. Darbā kalibrēta vienkārša, kvantitatīva metode entomopatogēno nematožu Steinernema feltiae (Filipiev, 1934) sastopamības novērtēšanai izmantojot Galleria mellonella (Linnaeus, 1758) kāpurus kā ēsmu. G. mellonella ēsmas tests tika kalibrēts divu dažāda vecuma sterilizētas kokosa šķiedras substrātā, kur tika konstatēta būtiska korelācija starp S. feltiae indivīdu blīvumu un G. mellonella mirstību 48h laikā gan svaigā (p<0.01, r=0.86, n=25), gan trīs gadus lietotajā (p<0.01, r=0.85, n=25) substrātā. En este artículo abordamos el análisis de la evolución reciente del gallego en el ámbito familiar. En concreto, nos interesan los procesos de producción, reproducción y no reproducción de la lengua y sus consecuencias en la actual situación de substitución lingüística. En el periodo que va desde 1992 a 2008, la distribución de la lengua inicial se ha visto sensiblemente modificada, sobre todo por la penetración del español en la mayor parte de las familias. Sin embargo, el artículo pone de manifiesto los errores que plantea tomar la lengua inicial como única variable de referencia para medir la transmisión lingüística intergeneracional.
