Dry vs soaked wood: Modulating the volatile extractible fraction of oak wood by heat treatments

The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the water content of wood on the concentrations of volatile compounds which can be extracted after heat treatments. Head Space-Solid Phase Micro Extraction Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (HS-SPME GC-MS) has been used to compare the concentrations of six aroma compounds (vanillin, furfural, eugenol, guaiacol and cis- and trans-whisky lactones) in hydroalcoholic extracts of heated oak wood samples either previously soaked in hot water or not. Prefractionation of aroma extracts from fat-containing food by high-performance size-exclusion chromatography

A method for the prefractionation of aroma extracts of fat-containing food using high-performance size-exclusion chromatography is presented. The aim was to obtain a fraction of volatile compounds with a residual triglyceride content as low as possible, in order to allow its direct analysis by gas chromatography. Two different mobile phases, diethyl ether and dichloromethane, were tested and the elution volumes of triglycerides and a large variety of aroma compounds were measured. The quality of separation between triglycerides and volatile compounds as a function of column load was studied. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of goat cheese volatiles.

Effect of onion consumption by rats on hepatic drug-metabolizing enzymes

Fruits and vegetables or their natural constituents which increase detoxication enzymes and/or reduce activating enzymes are considered as good candidates to prevent chemically-induced carcinogenesis. In this study, rats were fed a diet supplemented with 20% onion powder for 9 days. Several cytochrome P450 (CYP)s enzymes (CYP 1A, 2B, 2E1, 3A), which are involved in carcinogen activation, were determined by measuring their enzyme activities using specific substrates. In addition, phase II enzymes activities such as UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), involved in detoxication of carcinogens, were measured. Characterization of a novel selenium methyltransferase from freshwater bacteria showing strong similarities with the calicheamicin methyltransferase

A novel group of Se-methyltransferases is presented. The genetic determinant, named mmtA, which revealed this group was isolated from selenite and selenate-resistant freshwater bacteria. E. coli expressing mmtA and grown with a Se supplement emitted dimethyl selenide (DMSe) and dimethyl diselenide (DMDSe). Phylogenetic analysis divided MmtA-like bacterial sequences into two clusters, one grouping MmtA with S- and O-methyltransferases, and one grouping UbiE C-methyltransferases. Se methylation by some of these MmtA phyletic neighbours was investigated.

Identification of bound alcohols in soil humic acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

International audience; Humic acids are complex, partly macromolecular, yellow-brownish substances occurring in soils, waters and sediments. In order to shed some light on their molecular structure, crop humic acids were cleaved by alkaline hydrolysis (KOH). The products were fractionated by thin layer chromatography to give mono-alcohols which were analysed as acetate derivatives by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Abstract CuO oxidation is traditionally used for soil lignin study, although, like other degradation methods it might give access only to a part of the lignin polymers. For structural characterization, lignins are conventionally isolated from plant material by combining ball-milling, cellulolysis and solvent extraction to recover a milled wall enzymatic lignin (MWEL) fraction. Powerful odorants in bovine, ovine, caprine and water buffalo milk determined by means of gas chromatography-olfactometry

SummaryThe main compounds responsible for the aroma of bovine, ovine, caprine and water buffalo freshly secreted milk have been identified by means of a gas chromatography–olfactometry technique. Of the fourteen odour-active volatile compounds detected, eight were present in all milks studied. Ethylbutanoate and ethylhexanoate (fruit-like aroma), among the neutral odorants, were the major contributors to the odour of bovine, ovine and caprine milk. Neutral volatile compounds in the raw milks from different species

SummaryA comparative study was carried out on the flavour constituents of bovine, ovine, caprine and water buffalo fresh raw milks. The volatiles were isolated from milks by means of vacuum distillation and liquid–liquid extraction. Eighty neutral volatile compounds were identified using high resolution gas chromatography (HRGC) and HRGC-mass spectrometry. About 30 of these components have not been detected previously in milk. The volatiles in milk were similar for the four species, although several quantitative differences might explain the different odours. Inverse gas chromatography study of acid-base properties of cation resin used as catalysts of Bisphenol A synthesis

The inverse gas chromatography method have been used for estimation of relative number of acid and base active centres for two type cation exchangers that are used as catalysts of Bisphenol A industrial synthesis. It was stated that after a few weeks of the continuous work of reactors filled with the catalysts, the acid-base properties of the latter have undergone significant changes. The number of acid centres decreased while the number of base centres increased. Simultaneously, the decreased of the yield of the synthesis product was observed.

This study concerns the development of a coupled diffusion denuder system capable of separating and quantifying gaseous molecular iodine (I(2)) and two other highly reactive iodine species, ICl and HOI, which are collectively named activated iodine compounds (AIC).
