Abstract 1. 1. Gastric evacuation rate and lipid absorption and transport were studied in sea bass reared at 25°, 20° and 15°C. 2. 2. An increase in gastric evacuation and a reduction in lipid absorption were observed at the higher temperature. 3. 3. Lowering temperature (15°C), led to a decrease in the rate of gastric emptying, with a prolonged lipid absorption. 4. 4. Relationships between lipid absorption and gastric evacuation are discussed.

PURPOSE: Epidural anesthesia is believed to benefit colorectal anastomotic blood flow because of the sympathetic blockade it produces. Our purpose is to measure with tonometry the effect of epidural anesthesia on colorectal anastomotic oxygenation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen patients operated on for rectal cancer (radical anterior resection) were monitored postoperatively using tonometers placed in the stomach (celiac trunk), transverse colon (superior mesenteric artery), and the anastomotic area during the operation. Effect of lactose, lactulose and bisacodyl on gastrointestinal transit studied by metal detector.

SUMMARY Aim and methods: To study the effect of 45 g lactose, 30 g lactulose and 10 mg bisacodyl on gastrointestinal transit in 30 healthy volunteers by metal detector and Hinton marker method. The first set of measurements were performed under standard conditions. In a second stage, transit was slowed to twice the original value by loperamide to simulate constipation conditions. Results: Bisacodyl drastically accelerated small and large intestinal transit. Colonic transit was shortened to 23 % and to 31% of control values, without and with loperamide. The expression and prognostic role of cyclin D1, cyclin E, and p21 (WAF1/CIP1) were immunohistochemically investigated in 413 curatively resected gastric carcinomas. p21 was expressed in 65.4 per cent (n=270), cyclin D1 in 23.7 per cent (n=98), and cyclin E in 13.6 per cent ( n=56) of the tumours. The expression of p21, cyclin D1, and cyclin E was positively associated with the papillary or tubular type of the WHO classification, as well as with the intestinal type according to the Lauren classification. 1. The effect of acetate absorbed from the gut on glucose turnover has been determined in four healthy subjects during both fasting and an intravenous glucose infusion by using [U-13C]glucose. 2. In the first part of the study, after an overnight fast, a tracer dose of [U-13C]glucose was infused at a constant rate along with an infusion of saline for 7 h.
