Space variant vision and pipelined architecture for time to impact computation
2002
Image analysis is one of the most interesting ways for a mobile vehicle to understand its environment. One of the tasks of an autonomous vehicle is to get accurate information of what it has in front, to avoid collision or find a way to a target. This task requires real-time restrictions depending on the vehicle speed and external object movement. The use of normal cameras, with homogeneous (squared) pixel distribution, for real-time image processing, usually requires high performance computing and high image rates. A different approach makes use of a CMOS space-variant camera that yields a high frame rate with low data bandwidth. The camera also performs the log-polar transform, simplifyin…
An FPGA-based design for real-time Super Resolution Reconstruction
2018
Since several decades, the camera spatial resolution is gradually increasing with the CMOS technology evolution. The image sensors provide more and more pixels, generating new constraints for the suitable optics. As an alternative, promising solutions propose Super Resolution (SR) image reconstruction to extend the image size without modifying the sensor architecture. Convincing state-of art studies demonstrate that these methods could even be implemented in real-time. Nevertheless, artifacts can be observed in highly textured areas of the image. In this paper, we propose a Local Adaptive Spatial Super Resolution (LASSR) method to fix this limitation. A real-time texture analysis is include…
Real-time Sub-pixel Cross Bar Position Metrology
2002
Many measurement application fields need to calculate cross bar intersection locations of horizontal and vertical bars. The system we developed and that we present in this paper is an embedded system that measures cross bar positions with sub-pixel accuracy on 1024×1024 pixel images delivered by a camera at a 50 MHz data rate in real time. This is done using an algorithm that looks for intersection areas and then locally calculates two lines representing horizontal and vertical bars. The two line intersection is considered to be the bar intersection. To achieve real time, we developed a hybrid architecture in which low level processes are implemented into FPGAs and others into DSPs. As a re…
Interaction of a host plant and its holoparasite: effects of previous selection by the parasite
2001
If parasites decrease the fitness of their hosts one could expect selection for host traits (e.g. resistance and tolerance) that decrease the negative effects of parasitic infection. To study selection caused by parasitism, we used a novel study system: we grew host plants (Urtica dioica) that originated from previously parasitized and unparasitized natural populations (four of each) with or without a holoparasitic plant (Cuscuta europaea). Infectivity of the parasite (i.e. qualitative resistance of the host) did not differ between the two host types. Parasites grown with hosts from parasitized populations had lower performance than parasites grown with hosts from unparasitized populations,…
Quarry limestone dust as fine aggregate for concrete
2018
In quarrying activities, rock is extracted and transformed into aggregate of various sizes for civil engineering applications. In this process waste fine aggregates (dust waste) are generated. The disposal of this type of waste is a further cost in the extraction process, but also a possible cause of environmental pollution (e.g. leaching into water reserves, atmospheric pollution as a result of small particles causing respiratory diseases or deposited on plants disrupting photosynthesis, affecting aquatic habitats, etc.). A strategy for the effective recycling of quarry dust does not only reduce waste generation and disposal, but also addresses protection of the environment. The Italian qu…

Iterative Regularization Techniques in Image Reconstruction
2000
In this survey we review recent developments concerning the efficient iterative regularization of image reconstruction problems in atmospheric imaging. We present a number of preconditioners for the minimization of the corresponding Tikhonov functional, and discuss the alternative of terminating the iteration early, rather than adding a stabilizing term in the Tikhonov functional. The methods are examplified for a (synthetic) model problem.
Tridiagonal preconditioning for Poisson-like difference equations with flat grids: Application to incompressible atmospheric flow
2011
AbstractThe convergence of many iterative procedures, in particular that of the conjugate gradient method, strongly depends on the condition number of the linear system to be solved. In cases with a large condition number, therefore, preconditioning is often used to transform the system into an equivalent one, with a smaller condition number and therefore faster convergence. For Poisson-like difference equations with flat grids, the vertical part of the difference operator is dominant and tridiagonal and can be used for preconditioning. Such a procedure has been applied to incompressible atmospheric flows to preserve incompressibility, where a system of Poisson-like difference equations is …
An aggregate AQI: comparing different standardizations and introducing a variability index
2012
Many studies demonstrate a strong relationship between air pollution and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. For this reason, assessing air pollution, and conveying information about its possible adverse health effects, may encourage population and policy makers to reduce those activities increasing pollution levels. In this paper a relative index of variability, to be associated with the aggregate Air Quality Index (AQI) among pollutants proposed by Ruggieri and Plaia (2011), is developed in order to better investigate air pollution conditions for the whole area of a city/region. The most widely-used and up to date pollution indices, based mainly on AQI computed by the US Environmenta…
