Fast spiking neural network architecture for low-cost FPGA devices

Spiking Neural Networks (SNN) consist of fully interconnected computation units (neurons) based on spike processing. This type of networks resembles those found in biological systems studied by neuroscientists. This paper shows a hardware implementation for SNN. First, SNN require the inputs to be spikes, being necessary a conversion system (encoding) from digital values into spikes. Digital background calibration algorithm and its FPGA implementation for timing mismatch correction of time-interleaved ADC

Sample time error can degrade the performance of time-interleaved analog to digital converters (TIADCs). A fully digital background algorithm is presented in this paper to estimate and correct the timing mismatch errors between four interleaved channels, together with its hardware implementation. The proposed algorithm provides low computation burden and high performance. It is based on the simplified representation of the coefficients of the Lagrange interpolator. Simulation results show that it can suppress error tones in all of the Nyquist band. Self-powered IoT Device based on Energy Harvesting for Remote Applications

In this paper, we present the design and prototype implementation of self-powered Internet of Things (IoT) device based on energy harvesting from a small solar panel of size 63mm x 63mm and 0.36W for remote applications. These IoT devices can be deployed in remote places within the range of a gateway. A complete proof of concept IoT device based on ambient energy harvesting is designed, prototyped and tested with super capacitors and Lithium cells in star topology. Based on the measurements, the IoT device can potentially last for one year with 55 seconds transmission interval with the fully charged 120mAh coin cell battery. Inversion of matrix pencils for generalized systems

Abstract This paper clarifies the nature of the Leverrier-Faddeev algorithm for generalized and state-space systems. It presents useful diagrams for recursive computation of the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial and the coefficient matrices of the adjoint matrix for various matrix pencils. A simplified case covers recursive equations and diagrams for inversion of the second-order matrix pencil (Es2 + A1s + A0) where E may be singular. The appendix provides two examples of mechanical and heat exchange systems which can be described by the generalized models.

Who shapes the news? Analyzing journalists’ and organizational interests as competing influences on biased coverage

This study investigates influences on gatekeeping processes that have the potential to cause biased media coverage. We tested whether and, if so, to what extent journalists’ and organizational interests affect journalistic news processing. In a content analysis, we contrasted the press coverage (n = 1199 articles) of trade disputes of newspaper journalists with the coverage of other trade disputes. Results indicate both coverage and statement bias. In their coverage of newspaper disputes, journalists evaluated employers’ offers significantly more negatively, framed industrial action as legitimate, and criticized employers’ behavior during strikes.

The design of NoCs for multi-core chips introduces new design constraints like power consumption, area, and ultra low latencies. Although 2D meshes are preferred, heterogeneous blocks, fabrication faults, reliability issues, and chip virtualization may lead to the need of irregular topologies or regions. In this paper, we present a method of obtaining complex predator-prey dynamic models from models at a detailed, behaviourial level of description. Government Size, the Role of Commitments*

We explore the hypothesis that long-term commitments affect the dynamics of government expenditure. With the aid of a simple median-voter model we interpret the pattern of increasing-then-constant tax rates observed in OECD countries in the second half of the last century: persistence of public expenditure and a lower bound on new interventions will push government size upward, and preferences of the electorate put a halt to this growth at some point. In this view, the fiscal policy variable is seen to consist of only a part of the total expenditure, the rest being predetermined by its past level.
