THE RELIGIOUS FEAST OF ST. AGATHA. A MODERN INITIATION RITE IN CATANIA<br>VERSKI PRAZNIK SV. AGATE. SODOBNI INICIACIJSKI RITUAL V CATANIJI</…

2007

This religious feast is one of the most important in the Mediterranean area. It attracts a very large number of the faithful, especially young people, who live out this commemorative moment like an casual appointment with the patron saint of Catania, a town in the Sicilian region of southern Italy. This analysis shows how the event represents not only a religious feast, consecrating the annual encounter between the saint and her local community, but also a kind of modern youth initiation rite. Verski praznik sv. Agate je eden najpomembnejsih na sredozemskem obmocju. Privabi stevilne vernike, posebej mlade, ki doživijo ta komemorativni dogodek kot priložnostno srecanje z zavetnikom Catanije,…

Views from the boundaries: Music streaming revisited

2021

This article explores how Norwegian record label managers understand their current positions and future possibilities in a market that is increasingly driven by on-demand subscription-based streaming. It adds to a growing body of research by adopting a qualitative approach, seeking to describe issues at a personal or company level, and provide nuance and dynamics in a discourse that is often described in dichotomies and on aggregate levels. The article argues that stakeholders have more varied attitudes than simply being for or against the innovation, the new economic models and their eff ects on their own business, and the market in general. It also demonstrates that perceptions change as …

Traditional knowledge and practice of the Triassic variegated clay from Silesia (Krasiejów), Poland, in human medicine.

2021

AbstractBackgroundKrasiejów clay (in German: Krascheow) became famous following the discovery of numerous fossilised bones of Upper Triassic amphibians and reptiles, which have been extracted from clay deposits since the 1980s. These organic remnants remained in Krasiejów clay due to the large amount of slime deposits and the optimal concentration of basal mineral salts. The main aims of the paper are to determine the historical evolution of the use of clay in Silesia for therapeutic purposes and to provide a summary of the historical uses of Krasiejów clay as a medical treatment, based on the knowledge of the local population.MethodsThe mode of utilisation of Triassic variegated claystone t…

Automatic Counting of Intra-Cellular Ribonucleo-Protein Aggregates in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Using a Textural Approach.

2019

AbstractIn the context of microbiology, recent studies show the importance of ribonucleo-protein aggregates (RNPs) for the understanding of mechanisms involved in cell responses to specific environmental conditions. The assembly and disassembly of aggregates is a dynamic process, the characterization of the stage of their evolution can be performed by the evaluation of their number. The aim of this study is to propose a method to automatically determine the count of RNPs. We show that the determination of a precise count is an issue by itself and hence, we propose three textural approaches: a classical point of view using Haralick features, a frequency point of view with generalized Fourier…

Complete Genome Sequence of “Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum” BT-QVLC, an Obligate Symbiont That Supplies Amino Acids and Carotenoids to Bemisia ta…

2012

ABSTRACT The genome of “ Candidatus Portiera aleyrodidarum,” the primary endosymbiont of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Mediterranean species), is reported. It presents a reduced genome (357 kb) encoding the capability to synthetize, or participate in the synthesis of, several amino acids and carotenoids, being the first insect endosymbiont capable of supplying carotenoids.

Selective, Highly Sensitive, and Rapid Detection of Genomic DNA by Using Gated Materials:MycoplasmaDetection

2013

The coupling of gated-indicator delivery with highly specific biochemical recognition is an innovative strategy for the detection of DNA sequences, able to compete with classical methods which need PCR amplification, in important areas such as point-of-care diagnostics or detection of specific biological contaminations with pathogens. Such comparatively simple and cheap yet highly selective and sensitive assays hold promise for use in less-developed areas of the world.

Molecular Systematics of Aphids and Their Primary Endosymbionts

2001

Abstract Aphids constitute a monophyletic group within the order Homoptera (i.e., superfamily Aphidoidea). The Aphidoidea originated in the Jurassic about 150 my ago from some aphidiform ancestor whose origin can be traced back to about 250 my ago. They exhibit a mutualistic association with intracellular bacteria ( Buchnera sp.) related to Escherichia coli. Buchnera is usually considered the aphids' primary endosymbiont. The association is obligate for both partners. The 16S rDNA-based phylogeny of Buchnera from four aphid families showed complete concordance with the morphology-based phylogeny of their aphid hosts, which pointed to a single original infection in a common ancestor of aphid…

Novel σ1 antagonists designed for tumor therapy: Structure – activity relationships of aminoethyl substituted cyclohexanes

2021

Abstract Depending on the substitution pattern and stereochemistry, 1,3-dioxanes 1 with an aminoethyl moiety in 4-position represent potent σ1 receptor antagonists. In order to increase the stability, a cyclohexane ring first replaced the acetalic 1, 3-dioxane ring of 1. A large set of aminoethyl substituted cyclohexane derivatives was prepared in a six-step synthesis. All enantiomers and diastereomers were separated by chiral HPLC at the stage of the primary alcohol 7, and their absolute configuration was determined by CD spectroscopy. Neither the relative nor the absolute configuration had a large impact on the σ1 affinity. The highest σ1 affinity was found for cis-configured benzylamines…
