Blue autofluorescence in protein aggregates “lighted on” by UV induced oxidation

2019

Oxidation of amino acid side chains in protein structure can be induced by UV irradiation leading to critical changes in molecular structure possibly modifying protein stability and bioactivity. Here we show, by using a combination of multiple spectroscopic techniques and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging, that UV-light exposure induces irreversible oxidation processes in Ubiquitin structure. In particular, the growth of a new autofluorescence peak in the blue region is detected, that we attribute to tyrosine oxidation products. Blue autofluorescence intensity is found to progressively increase also during aggregation processes leading to the formation of aggregates of non-amyloid nature. Signi…

Competenza territoriale e indagini collegate in materia di associazioni di tipo mafioso

2013

An Innovative dosimeter based on a floating Gate sensor

2019

This work describes the development of a new method for recording radiation exposure by using a passive dosimeter based on a Floating Gate CMOS sensor. The floating Gate sensors based on the MOS structure discharge allow the construction of compact and cost-efficient dosimeters, realized in VLSI CMOS technology, for use in integration mode in various applications, in particular in radiotherapy.

A real-time non-intrusive FPGA-based drowsiness detection system

2011

Automotive has gained several benefits from the Ambient Intelligent researches involving the deployment of sensors and hardware devices into an intelligent environment surrounding people, meeting users’ requirements and anticipating their needs. One of the main topics in automotive is to anticipate driver needs and safety, in terms of preventing critical and dangerous events. Considering the high number of caused accidents, one of the most relevant dangerous events affecting driver and passengers safety is driver’s drowsiness and hypovigilance. This paper presents a low-intrusive, real-time driver’s drowsiness detection system for common vehicles. The proposed system exploits the ‘‘bright p…

Coupling of the antiviral agent zidovudine to polyaspartamide and in vitro drug release studies.

1998

A macromolecular prodrug of the known antiretroviral agent zidovudine and alpha, beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-DL-aspartamide (PHEA) was synthesized. A succinic spacer was present between the polymer and the drug, and 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole was used as the coupling agent. In vitro drug release studies at pH 1.1, 5.5 and 7.4 indicated that limited amounts of intact drug were released from the conjugate. At pH 1.1 and 7.4 succinylzidovudine was released, and this was hydrolysed to give free zidovudine. In the presence of alpha-chymotrypsin, zidovudine was released preferentially in comparison with the succinyl derivative. The amounts of released zidovudine and succinylzidovudine were greater …

Polymer-doxycycline conjugates as fibril disrupters: an approach towards the treatment of a rare amyloidotic disease.

2014

The term amyloidosis describes neurological diseases where an abnormal protein is misfolded and accumulated as deposits in organs and tissues, known as amyloid, disrupting their normal function. In the most common familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP), transthyretin (TTR) displays this role primarily affecting the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Advanced stages of this inherited rare amyloidosis, present as fibril deposits that are responsible for disease progression. In order to stop disease progression, herein we designed an efficient family of nanoconjugates as fibril disrupters. These polymer conjugates are based on doxycycline (doxy), already in phase II trials for Alzheimer's disease…

Cationic Supramolecular Vesicular Aggregates for Pulmonary Tissue Selective Delivery in Anticancer Therapy

2016

The biopharmaceutical properties of supramolecular vesicular aggregates (SVAs) were characterized with regard to their physicochemical features and compared with cationic liposomes (CLs). Neutral and cationic SVAs were synthesized using two different copolymers of poly(aspartyl hydrazide) by thin-layer evaporation and extrusion techniques. Both copolymers were self-assembled in pre-formulated liposomes and formed neutral and cationic SVAs. Gemcitabine hydrochloride (GEM) was used as an anticancer drug and loaded by a pH gradient remote loading procedure, which significantly increased drug loading inside the SVAs. The resulting average size of the SVAs was 100 nm. The anticancer activity of …

Microstructural analysis of shearband boudin - preliminary results

2011

The internal structure of a shearband boudin resulting from an original igneous, hydrothermal or metamorphic segregation tabular rigid body is a subject of scientific interest. It allows understanding the deformation mechanisms acting on homogeneous quartz aggregate activated during simple shear progressive deformation. This communication is focused on the characterization of two main structural aspects: (i) the existence of different internal domains in shearband boudins; (ii) the development of internal structures related with its genesis and evolution, namely, secondary shear planes c’ type-I and c’ type-II, parameter B-t (mass accumulation sector on blunt tip of shearband boudin) and S-…

A novel methodology for accelerating bitstream relocation in partially reconfigurable systems

2012

International audience; Xilinx Virtex FPGAs offer the possibility of Partial Reconfiguration (PR). Arbitrary tasks can be allocated and de-allocated onto FPGA without system interruption. However, mapping a task to any available PR region requires a unique partial bitstream for each partition, hence reducing memory storage requirements. In recent years, an interest on overcoming this problem has lead to the concept of Partial Bitstream Relocation (PBR). The principle is to perform bitstream modification to map it to different regions. However, PBR consumes scarce resources in hardware implementations, and introduces a prohibitive time overhead when done in software. In order to find the bes…

A flexible and tunable route discovery mechanism for on-demand protocols

2004

Mobile ad-hoc networks are characterized by multihop wireless links and absence of cellular infrastructure. For the last years, routing has been the area under most intensive research. In particular, on-demand routing protocols proposed are extremely attractive due to their low-overhead and efficiency. Currently, wireless ad-hoc networks lack multipath routing protocols. Multipath routing enables increased QoS support, load balancing and enhanced route stability. In this paper we present a new route discovery solution that increases the number of routes found, while reducing the routing overhead when compared to previous proposals. Simulation results show that the additional routing overhea…
