Mentalizing eye contact with a face on a video : Gaze direction does not influence autonomic arousal

2018

Recent research has revealed enhanced autonomic and subjective responses to eye contact only when perceiving another live person. However, these enhanced responses to eye contact are abolished if the viewer believes that the other person is not able to look back at the viewer. We purported to investigate whether this "genuine" eye contact effect can be reproduced with pre-recorded videos of stimulus persons. Autonomic responses, gaze behavior, and subjective self-assessments were measured while participants viewed pre-recorded video persons with direct or averted gaze, imagined that the video person was real, and mentalized that the person could see them or not. Pre-recorded videos did not …

Temporal Structure of Human Gaze Dynamics Is Invariant During Free Viewing.

2015

We investigate the dynamic structure of human gaze and present an experimental study of the frequency components of the change in gaze position over time during free viewing of computer-generated fractal images. We show that changes in gaze position are scale-invariant in time with statistical properties that are characteristic of a random walk process. We quantify and track changes in the temporal structure using a well-defined scaling parameter called the Hurst exponent, H. We find H is robust regardless of the spatial complexity generated by the fractal images. In addition, we find the Hurst exponent is invariant across all participants, including those with distinct changes to higher or…

Unconventional Aeronautical Investigatory Methods: The Case of Alitalia Flight AZ 112

2021

Based on unconventional air investigation techniques, this book highlights the mysterious crash of Alitalia flight AZ 112 on 5 May 1972, which killed 115 people, and was blamed solely on pilot negligence. Its findings show the cause of the disaster was not actually related to any pilot negligence, but, rather, it was the result of a criminal act. It argues that this attack was a symptom of the geopolitical tensions in Italy and Europe in that decade. Based on unconventional air investigation techniques, this book highlights the mysterious crash of Alitalia flight AZ 112 on 5 May 1972

Tourist Gaze Reconsidered

2021

The term tourist gaze was coined initially to represent those superficial expectations that tourists have on destination communities; tourists impute their ideas of authentic experience upon destination residents and their social structure and see what they have predetermined to see. This is made more real when local communities consciously act out the desired roles for financial reasons. Thus, gaze leads to surreally authentic experiences. However, does this always happen? Say, in community-centered tourism where empowered destination communities choose tourists, tourists do not have the privilege to gaze. These communities might even be able to apply their own versions of gaze upon the to…

Encapsulation of hydrophilic and lipophilized catechin into nanoparticles through emulsion electrospraying

2017

In this work, we investigated the potential of emulsion electrospraying that contained bacterial cellulose and proteins for the encapsulation of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Specifically, two different catechins, hydrophilic (H-EGCG) or lipophilized (L-EGCG), were encapsulated either on the aqueous or the oily phase of the emulsions in order to compare the antioxidants’ stability. Emulsion properties in terms of stability, droplet size, bulk and interfacial viscosity were studied combined with the evaluation of the properties of the produced particles, namely the morphology and size of the particles, the encapsulation efficiency (EE) of catechin and the stability of the EGCG within the …
