Characterization and chromosomal localization of the chicken avidin gene family

Chicken avidin is a biotin-binding protein expressed under inflammation in several chicken tissues and in the oviduct after progesterone induction. The gene encoding avidin belongs to a family that has been shown to include multiple genes homologous to each other. The screening and chromosomal localization studies performed to reveal the structure and organization of the complete avidin gene family is described. The avidin gene family is arranged in a single cluster within a 27-kb genomic region. The cluster is located on the sex chromosome Z on band q21. The organization of the genes was determined and two novel avidin-related genes, AVR6 and AVR7, were cloned and sequenced.

Malic Enzyme and Malolactic Enzyme Pathways Are Functionally Linked but Independently Regulated in Lactobacillus casei BL23

ABSTRACT Lactobacillus casei is the only lactic acid bacterium in which two pathways for l -malate degradation have been described: the malolactic enzyme (MLE) and the malic enzyme (ME) pathways. Whereas the ME pathway enables L. casei to grow on l -malate, MLE does not support growth. The mle gene cluster consists of three genes encoding MLE ( mleS ), the putative l -malate transporter MleT, and the putative regulator MleR. Trans-Reactivation: A New Epigenetic Phenomenon Underlying Transcriptional Reactivation of Silenced Genes

In order to study the role played by cellular RNA pools produced by homologous genomic loci in defining the transcriptional state of a silenced gene, we tested the effect of non-functional alleles of the white gene in the presence of a functional copy of white, silenced by heterochromatin. We found that non-functional alleles of white, unable to produce a coding transcript, could reactivate in trans the expression of a wild type copy of the same gene silenced by heterochromatin. Frequent genomic imbalances suggest commonly altered tumour genes in human hepatocarcinogenesis

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most frequent-occurring malignant tumours worldwide, but molecular changes of tumour DNA, with the exception of viral integrations and p53 mutations, are poorly understood. In order to search for common macro-imbalances of genomic tumour DNA, 21 HCCs and 3 HCC-cell lines were characterized by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), subsequent database analyses and in selected cases by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Evolution of sex chromosomes: dosage compensation of the Lcp1-4 gene cluster on the evolving neo-X chromosome in Drosophila miranda.

In Drosophila miranda the small multigene family of the larval cuticle protein (Lcp1-4) genes resides on the evolving neo-X and neo-Y sex chromosome pair while in the sibling species Drosophila pseudoobscura and Drosophila persimilis the gene cluster is inherited autosomally. The neo-Y chromosomal Lcp1, Lcp2 and Lcp4 genes are, as previously shown by us, not expressed and only Lcp3 is expressed at a strongly reduced level. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacterium that replicates in neutrophil granulocytes. It is transmitted by ticks and causes tick-borne fever in domestic ruminants such as sheep, cattle and goats. However, in contrast to sheep and cattle little is known about the clinical course of infection in goats. We report here on three cases of symptomatic infection with A. phagocytophilum in two goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) and one water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). A large variety of physiological and taxonomic groups have the ability to use nitrogen oxides as alternative electron acceptors. Brucella spp. is an alpha-proteobacteriaceae that induces a persistent disease in some mammals. Recent work has revealed that a denitrifying gene cluster is important in the interaction of Brucella neotomoae with its host.

Comparative Genomics Analysis of Keratin-Degrading Chryseobacterium Species Reveals Their Keratinolytic Potential for Secondary Metabolite Production

A promising keratin-degrading strain from the genus Chryseobacterium (Chryseobacterium sp. KMC2) was investigated using comparative genomic tools against three publicly available reference genomes to reveal the keratinolytic potential for biosynthesis of valuable secondary metabolites. Genomic features and metabolic potential of four species were compared, showing genomic differences but similar functional categories.
