Law of the Land: Shades of Nordic Noir in an Arctic Western
2020
Armoton maa (Law of the Land, Jussi Hiltunen, 2017) is a contemporary western set on a peripheral border region in western Lapland, Finland. Combining crime story and family drama, it is a complex case of genre hybridity. This chapter asks how Law of the Land adapts elements from Nordic noir and modifies the Lapland film, a mixture of films set in Lapland. The melancholy mood and the dark aesthetic links the film to Nordic noir, which has traveled to remote regions recently. However, Lapland can also be seen as a Finnish version of the Wild West. Law of the Land exemplifies both the mutation and vitality of Nordic noir as a style, demonstrating that it can be adapted by other genres, even b…
Music we move to : Spotify audio features and reasons for listening
2022
Previous literature has shown that music preferences (and thus preferred musical features) differ depending on the listening context and reasons for listening (RL). Yet, to our knowledge no research has investigated how features of music that people dance or move to relate to particular RL. Consequently, in two online surveys, participants (N = 173) were asked to name songs they move to (“dance music”). Additionally, participants (N = 105) from Survey 1 provided RL for their selected songs. To investigate relationships between the two, we first extracted audio features from dance music using the Spotify API and compared those features with a baseline dataset that is considered to represent …

Remote but Connected : Lapland as a Scene of Transnational Crime in Ivalo
2021
Set in a small town in the north of Finland, the crime TV series Ivalo (Arctic Circle, Finland, 2018) exemplifies the fascination of Nordic Noir with ‘remote’ locations as scenes of transnational crime. The plot seems to forebode the corona pandemic, portraying the spread of a life-threatening ‘Yemenite virus’ developed as a biological weapon from the Balkans to Lapland. In this article, I analyze how the virus narrative allows the series to bring new perspectives on Nordic Noir. The narrative emphasizes international connections while creating representations of places that can be characterized as both translocal (Greiner and Sakdapolrak 2013) and glocal (Robertson 2012). Because of its fa…
Ympäristöuhkia ja tunnistamatonta vierautta
2022
Teatral'nost' v tvorčestve O. I. Senkovskogo
2001
The present study is dedicated to O. I. Senkovsky, (1800-1858) who was a professor of St. Petersburg University, an outstanding scientist, editor-in-chief of a popular magazine “Reading Library”, an influential literary critic, and a writer. This study provides a novel perspective on Senkovsky’s legacy, an attempt to comprehend his works through theatrical methods.Senkovsky’s literary masks express theatricality in his works. The name of his most famous pseudonym Baron Brambeus borrows deliberately from the Russian “lubok” literature in order to attract the attention of a general reader. It is Senkovsky’s bent for exotics, parody and paradox as the methods for his work that has defined the …
The value of academics’ research-related online writing

Research productivity indicators tend to ignore online and social media writing of academics, nevertheless, many academics for instance tweet and blog. It thus seems that there is additional value for writing in these genres. Drawing on in-depth research interviews with 29 academics with various L1s from three different disciplines, the study focuses on the participants’ perceptions of tweeting and blogging, and how they value writing in these genres in relation to core research-writing genres in their fields. Besides some differences in the evaluations betwee…
Revisiting the role of embedding in Systemic Functional Linguistics : Construing depth in “big texts”
2021
This paper is concerned with exploring the role of embedded genres in expanding the meaning potential of long texts, focusing especially on complex tertiary assignments. A significant body of work has evolved in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on modelling “big texts” as macrogenres since Martin (1994: 29) posed the question how texts “get bigger than a page”. However, based on detailed genre analyses of high-scoring undergraduate business country reports, this paper illustrates that not all big texts are macrogenres made up of elemental genre complexes. Analogising from clause grammar, it will show that these texts unfold through multiple layers of embedded genres in their generic st…
