A topological obstruction to the geodesibility of a foliation of odd dimension

1981

Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n, and let ℱ be a smooth foliation on M. A topological obstruction is obtained, similar to results of R. Bott and J. Pasternack, to the existence of a metric on M for which ℱ is totally geodesic. In this case, necessarily that portion of the Pontryagin algebra of the subbundle ℱ must vanish in degree n if ℱ is odd-dimensional. Using the same methods simple proofs of the theorems of Bott and Pasternack are given.

ON THE FUNDAMENTAL THEOREM OF CALCULUS FOR FRACTAL SETS

2015

The aim of this paper is to formulate the best version of the Fundamental theorem of Calculus for real functions on a fractal subset of the real line. In order to do that an integral of Henstock–Kurzweil type is introduced.

Common Fixed points for multivalued generalized contractions on partial metric spaces

2013

We establish some common fixed point results for multivalued mappings satisfying generalized contractive conditions on a complete partial metric space. The presented theorems extend some known results to partial metric spaces. We motivate our results by some given examples and an application for finding the solution of a functional equation arising in dynamic programming.

Some integral type fixed point theorems in Non-Archimedean Menger PM-Spaces with common property (E.A) and application of functional equations in dyn…

2013

In this paper, we prove some integral type common fixed point theorems for weakly compatible mappings in Non-Archimedean Menger PM-spaces employing common property (E.A). Some examples are furnished which demonstrate the validity of our results. We extend our main result to four finite families of self-mappings employing the notion of pairwise commuting. Moreover, we give an application which supports the usability of our main theorem.

Some fixed point theorems for generalized contractive mappings in complete metric spaces

2015

We introduce new concepts of generalized contractive and generalized alpha-Suzuki type contractive mappings. Then, we obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of a fixed point of these classes of mappings on complete metric spaces and b-complete b-metric spaces. Our results extend the theorems of Ciric, Chatterjea, Kannan and Reich.

Exact, efficient, and complete arrangement computation for cubic curves

2006

AbstractThe Bentley–Ottmann sweep-line method can compute the arrangement of planar curves, provided a number of geometric primitives operating on the curves are available. We discuss the reduction of the primitives to the analysis of curves and curve pairs, and describe efficient realizations of these analyses for planar algebraic curves of degree three or less. We obtain a complete, exact, and efficient algorithm for computing arrangements of cubic curves. Special cases of cubic curves are conics as well as implicitized cubic splines and Bézier curves. The algorithm is complete in that it handles all possible degeneracies such as tangential intersections and singularities. It is exact in t…

A bijection between words and multisets of necklaces

2012

Two of the present authors have given in 1993 a bijection Phi between words on a totally ordered alphabet and multisets of primitive necklaces. At the same time and independently, Burrows and Wheeler gave a data compression algorithm which turns out to be a particular case of the inverse of Phi. In the present article, we show that if one replaces in Phi the standard permutation of a word by the co-standard one (reading the word from right to left), then the inverse bijection is computed using the alternate lexicographic order (which is the order of real numbers given by continued fractions) on necklaces, instead of the lexicographic order as for Phi(-1). The image of the new bijection, ins…

On point-irreducible projective lattice geometries

1994

Within the conceptual frame of projective lattice geometry (as introduced in [5]) we are considering the class of all point-irreducible geometries. In the algebraic context these geometries are closely connected with unitary modules over local rings. Besides several synthetic investigations we obtain a lattice-geometric characterization of free left modules over right chain rings which allows a purely lattice-theoretic version in the Artinian case.

Precise bounds for the sequential order of products of some Fréchet topologies

1998

Abstract The sequential order of a topological space is the least ordinal for which the corresponding iteration of the sequential closure is idempotent. Lower estimates for the sequential order of the product of two regular Frechet topologies and upper estimates for the sequential order of the product of two subtransverse topologies are given in terms of their fascicularity and sagittality. It is shown that for every countable ordinal α, there exists a Lasnev topology such that the sequential order of its square is equal to α.
