Sentience and the Origins of Consciousness: From Cartesian Duality to Markovian Monism
2020
This essay addresses Cartesian duality and how its implicit dialectic might be repaired using physics and information theory. Our agenda is to describe a key distinction in the physical sciences that may provide a foundation for the distinction between mind and matter, and between sentient and intentional systems. From this perspective, it becomes tenable to talk about the physics of sentience and &lsquo
Equilibrium and structural studies of complexes with a hexadentate ligand containing amide, amine and pyridyl nitrogen donors. Crystal structures of …
2002
A novel potentially hexadentate ligand, 1,8-bis(2-pyridylcarbamoyl)-3,6-diazaoctane (pyctrien) has been synthesised as its tetrahydrochloride salt; its protonation constants and the stability constants of the copper(II) and nickel(II) chelates have been determined by potentiometry. Amide group deprotonation permits the formation of [MLH−1]+ and [MLH−2] species in all cases, whereas the detection of the neutral or the protonated species depends on the nature of the metal ions. The solid complexes of copper, nickel and cobalt with the neutral and the deprotonated ligand have been synthesised and characterised by IR and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The amidic groups are coordinated through the oxygen …
Bis[S-hexyl 3-(thiophen-2-ylmethylidene)dithiocarbazato-κ2N3,S]palladium(II)
2016
In the title complex, [Pd(C12H17N2S3)2], the PdIIatom exhibits a square-planar coordination geometry with theN,S-chelating ligands arranged in atransconfiguration. Intramolecular C—H...S hydrogen bonds are observed. In the crystal, molecules are linked by weak C—H...N hydrogen-bond interactions, forming chains parallel to thebaxis.
Prediction of properties of chiral compounds by molecular topology
1998
Abstract A common assumption in chemistry is that chiral behavior is associated with 3-D geometry. However, chiral information is related to symmetry, which allows the topological handling of chiral atoms by weighted graphs and the calculation of new descriptors that give a weight to the corresponding entry in the main diagonal of the topological matrix. In this study, it is demonstrated that, operating in this way, chiral topological indices are obtained that can differentiate the pharmacological activity between pairs of enantiomers. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of the D2 dopamine receptor and the σ receptor for a group of 3-hydroxy phenyl piperidines are specifically pr…
Unique continuation results for certain generalized ray transforms of symmetric tensor fields
2022
Let $I_{m}$ denote the Euclidean ray transform acting on compactly supported symmetric $m$-tensor field distributions $f$, and $I_{m}^{*}$ be its formal $L^2$ adjoint. We study a unique continuation result for the normal operator $N_{m}=I_{m}^{*}I_{m}$. More precisely, we show that if $N_{m}$ vanishes to infinite order at a point $x_0$ and if the Saint-Venant operator $W$ acting on $f$ vanishes on an open set containing $x_0$, then $f$ is a potential tensor field. This generalizes two recent works of Ilmavirta and M\"onkk\"onen who proved such unique continuation results for the ray transform of functions and vector fields/1-forms. One of the main contributions of this work is identifying t…

Iterative geometric modelling and new world of shapes
2010
Introducing Golden Section in the Mathematics Class to Develop Critical Thinking from the STEAM Perspective
2021
The Golden Section is a mathematical concept that is one of the most famous examples of connections between mathematics and the arts. Despite its widespread references in various areas of nature, art, architecture, literature, music, or aesthetics, discussions of the golden ratio often turn out to be false or misleading. Most of the incorrect statements are based on approximations or stem from the lack of checking the facts, making scientific mistakes in verifying the original scientific, historical, cultural context, or performing arbitrary operations in the measurements. This article offers geometric data and measurements, which allow the students to explore the golden ratio in various co…
Is There Any Hope for Developing Automated Translation Technology for Sign Languages?
2021
This article discusses the prerequisites for the machine translation of sign languages. The topic is complex, including questions relating to technology, interaction design, linguistics and culture. At the moment, despite the affordances provided by the technology, automated translation between signed and spoken languages – or between sign languages – is not possible. The very need of such translation and its associated technology can also be questioned. Yet, we believe that contributing to the improvement of sign language detection, processing and even sign language translation to spoken languages in the future is a matter that should not be abandoned. However, we argue that this work shou…
Long-Time Behaviour for the Brownian Heat Kernel on a Compact Riemannian Manifold and Bismut’s Integration-by-Parts Formula
2007
We give a probabilistic proof of the classical long-time behaviour of the heat kernel on a compact manifold by using Bismut’s integration-by-parts formula.
