Determination of terpene alcohols in Sicilian Muscat wines by HS-SPME-GC-MS.
2013
Muscat is a grape family used to obtain several sweet, aromatic white dessert wines common in the Mediterranean area. Currently, three Sicilian cultivars (all classified DOC) are known: 'Moscato di Siracusa' the oldest and very rare today; 'Moscato di Noto', a modern derivative of the first and finally 'Moscato di Pantelleria', now the most common. This study concerns the volatile profile of 15 different Sicilian Muscat wines produced in different years using HS-SPME-GC-MS. In particular, four fundamental terpene alcohols (linalool, geraniol, nerol and citronellol) were considered. The principal aim was to study the evolution of aromatic compounds in wine during aging, and the information o…
Behaviour-modifying compounds for management of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineusOliver)
2015
BACKGROUND Populations of red palm weevil (RPW), a severe pest of palms in Mediterranean countries, might be limited by semiochemical-based behaviour-disrupting methods. We evaluated the effects of electroantennogram (EAG)-active plant volatiles on the behaviour of RPWs from Italy and Israel. In field experiments, α-pinene, citronellol, geraniol, citral and 1-octen-3-ol were tested for their ability to disrupt attraction to pheromone–kairomone and molasses baited traps. Those that were found to be disruptive in the field were evaluated in a laboratory choice bioassay in individual cages for their effect on RPW female feeding and oviposition. RESULTS Field experiments showed reduced captures…
Geranylgeraniol - a new potential therapeutic approach to bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw.
2010
Bisphosphonate associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (BP-ONJ) is one of the main side effects of bisphosphonate therapy (BPT). To date, there is no effective therapy of the BP-ONJ. Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs) are particularly able to inhibit pyrophosphate synthase (FPPS) in the mevalonate pathway (MVP). Consequent of decreased synthesis of the metabolite Geranylgeraniol (GGOH) is believed to largely account for the development of BP-ONJ. Negative effect of N-BPs could be shown, resulting in decreased viability and migration capacity of different cell types of hard and soft tissues such as osteoblasts, fibroblast und endothelial cells. Aim of our in vitro study was to demonstra…
Analysis of Essential Oils from Scutellaria orientalis ssp. alpina and S. utriculata by GC and GC-MS
2011
The chemical composition of the essential oils obtained from aerial parts of Scutellaria orientalis L. ssp. alpina (Boiss.) O. Schwarz and S. utriculata Labill. growing wild in Lebanon, were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. In S. orientalis ssp. alpina, strongly characterized by sesquiterpenes (41.2%) and particularly sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (31.7%), hexahydrofarnesylacetone (11.7%) was recognized as the main constituent, together with hexadecanoic acid (7.6%), caryophyllene (7.4%), caryophyllene oxide (6.8%), 4-vinylguaiacol (5.4%) and germacrene D (5.4%). S. utriculata oil was instead constituted above all by monoterpenes (42.2%), particularly oxygen containing monoterpenes (39.9%), and in t…

Fractionation of glycoside aroma precursors in neutral grapes. Hydrolysis and conversion by Saccharomyces cerevisiae
2004
Abstract Glycoconjugated aroma precursors from neutral grape varieties were fractionated on 5 g C18 RP cartridge. Each of the seven fractions collected was divided in three parts: first part was hydrolysed with Pectinol in order to determine total aromatic heterosides, while the second part was treated with an active strain of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae UCLM 325 and the third part with acetonic powder of the same yeast strain. The studied strain proved effective in the hydrolysis of the heterosides of nerol and geraniol, cis-8-hydroxy-linalool, 8-hydroxy-dihydro-linalool, some benzenoids and some norisoprenoids derivatives such as vomifoliol and 3-oxo-α-ionol. Only whole cells are a…
Syntaxonomical survey of Geranio-Cardaminetalia hirsutae: Semi-natural therophytic vegetation of the Mediterranean region
2007
A syntaxonomical scheme, including geographical range and synonymies of all the associations ascribed to Geranio-Cardaminetalia hirsutae, is presented. This order, framed into the class Stellarietea mediae, groups sciaphilo-subnitrophilous annual vegetation of natural and semi-natural habitats, commonly occurring on substrata rich in organic matter, accumulating on stone-walls, shaded rocks and initial soils, often under the canopy of shrubs and trees. Twelve new associations from Sardinia, Sicily, Egean islands and Israel are here described for the first time.
De novo production of six key grape aroma monoterpenes by a geraniol synthase-engineered S. cerevisiae wine strain
2015
[Background] Monoterpenes are important contributors to grape and wine aroma. Moreover, certain monoterpenes have been shown to display health benefits with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer or hypotensive properties amongst others. The aim of this study was to construct self-aromatizing wine yeasts to overproduce de novo these plant metabolites in wines.
Influence of different dehydration levels on volatile profiles, phenolic contents and skin hardness of alkaline pre-treated grapes cv Muscat of Alexa…
2020
A dehydration experiment was carried out on Vitis vinifera L. cv Muscat of Alexandria (synonym Zibibbo) following the process for the production of renowned special dessert wines produced on Pantelleria island (Sicily, Italy). Harvested berries were pre-treated in a sodium hydroxide dipping solution (45 g/L, dipped for 185 s, 25 °
