Age-dependent decline of steady state dopamine storage capacity of human brain: an FDOPA PET study.

Conventional indices of the utilization of FDOPA in living human brain have not consistently revealed important declines in dopamine function with normal aging. However, most methods of kinetic analysis have assumed irreversible trapping of decarboxylated FDOPA metabolites in brain, an assumption that is violated even in PET recordings of short duration. Therefore, we have developed methods for the calculation of steady-state storage of FDOPA together with its decarboxylated metabolites (V(d), mlg(-1)), based upon improved kinetic analysis of 120-min emission recordings. Lower limb muscle weakness predicts use of a multiple- versus single-step strategy to recover from forward loss of balance in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Older adults compared with young adults have reduced strength and balance recovery ability. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether age, sex, and/or lower limb strength predicted the stepping strategy used to recover from a forward loss of balance. METHODS: Ninety-five, community-dwelling, older adults, aged 65-90 years, participated in the study. Loss of balance was induced by releasing participants from a static forward lean. Standing up from a chair as a dynamic equilibrium task: a comparison between young and elderly subjects.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the features of center of mass (CoM) control along anterior/posterior axis in young and elderly subjects during sit-to-stand (STS). From a sitting position, seven healthy young subjects and seven healthy elderly subjects were asked to stand up from a chair under different experimental conditions (visual conditions: normal and blindfolded; speed: normal and as fast as possible). Abstract Background To analyse the clinical, epidemiological, microbiological and prognostic differences of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) in older (≥ 65 years of age) versus younger patients (< 65 years). Methods Multicentre, retrospective cohort study in all patients with PLA admitted to two Spanish hospitals from January 2000 to January 2014. Assessment of the interest of the geriatric oncology consultation among French general practitioners

International audience; OBJECTIVE: We assessed the interest of the geriatric oncology (GO) consultation (GOC) among general practitioners (GPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a survey among GPs whose patients had had a GOC in 2012. A questionnaire was sent to GPs. The 1st part collected GPs' characteristics including medical education in geriatrics and GO, and knowledge of GOC. The following parts concerned the GOC and included the cancer type, GOC report and care plan. RESULTS: One-hundred twenty-six questionnaires corresponding to 94 GPs were collected. How many parkinsonian patients are suitable candidates for deep brain stimulation of subthalamic nucleus? Results of a questionnaire.

We used a CAPSIT-based questionnaire to estimate the percentage of parkinsonian patients suitable for subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) in a movement disorders clinic. We found that out of 641 consecutive PD patients only 1.6% fulfilled strict STN-DBS criteria. When we applied more flexible criteria, the percentage of eligibility increased to 4.5%. Most patients (60%) were ineligible because they did not satisfy multiple questionnaire items. Items related to disease severity were responsible for the largest number of exclusions. This knowledge will help make decisions on resource allocation in centres wishing to start DBS surgery.
