The first global report on health and ageing published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2015 introduced a new and innovative concept, namely, the idea that healthy ageing encompasses more than just the absence of disease. The report considered healthy ageing to be a more holistic process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. There are two major components to this concept, namely, personal and environmental determinants of ageing. Vaccination in old age: Challenges and promises

Abstract Vaccination is one of the most effective medical interventions ever introduced, preventing millions of cases of infections worldwide every year. However, vaccines are commonly believed to be less effective in providing protection in older adults, due to the perceived decline seen in immunity in this population (“immunosenescence”). Accordingly, this chapter considers how to identify hallmarks of immunosenescence and approach their resolution strategically. It was reviewed potential options for therapeutic intervention to restore appropriate responses to vaccines in older adults.

The study was a replication of DeGenova’s (1992) study, aiming at identifying what elderly people would do differently if they had their life to live over. The Ss were 174 retired women (56%) and men (44%) born in 1927 or 1929, residing in urban areas. The subjects completed a questionnaire, Life Revision Index (LRI), developed by DeGenova (1992), assessing life revision in the areas of friends, family, work, education, leisure, religion, and health. The results show that education and leisure enjoyment are the areas with the greatest amount of desired change. Background and aims: A narrative review of quantitative population-based longitudinal studies was conducted to examine the association of formal voluntary work and personal well-being among older people doing the voluntary work and those being served. Methods: To be included, the study had to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, written in English and conducted in Western countries, participants were at least 60 years of age, the study employed a longitudinal or experimental design, the methodology and outcomes were explicitly described, and voluntary work quantified as visits or hours within a certain time frame. Abstract In order to characterize factors that affect sex work and their influence on risk practices, this ethnographic study carried out in a barrio in Valencia describes female sex workers who use illegal drugs, some who inject drugs and some who do not. A study conducted ten years earlier had shown that women in this setting who injected drugs had more irregular work habits, were less selective about their clientele, took more risks of HIV infection, and lowered their prices and lengthened their working hours when compared to women who did not inject drugs. Mapping Protective Performance of Social Network Types on Health and Quality of Life in Older People in European Regions.

Objectives: To identify social network profiles using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA), to study the relationships of these profiles with health markers, mental health, quality of life, and cognitive functioning, and to compare profiles across European regions. Methods: 27,272 participants from the Wave 8 of the SHARE project, aged 65 or older (M = 74.95, SD = 7.17) from Europe. Statistical analyses included LPAs followed by MANOVAs to compare the profiles and the health markers. Results: Five profiles were identified: family, friends, spouse, diverse, and others.
