Amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia
2006
Drug-induced gingival hyperplasia is a serious concern both for the patient and the clinician. A 45 year-old Caucasian male patient with hypertension, who received amlodipine (10 mg/day, single dose orally) for two months, sought medical attention because of the new-onset gingival enlargement. On clinical examination a generalized and firm overgrowth of the gingival throughout the maxilla and the mandible were evident. The lack of gingival inflammation and purulent discharge were other features of the clinical scenario. Histological assessment of the biopsy specimen revealed the hyperplasia of connective tissue, epithelial acanthosis, and elongated rete ridges along with few inflammatory ce…
Effects of mechanical stimulation on cell cycle duration in rat gingival fibroblast progenitor cells
2001
The aim of this investigation was to estimate cell cycle duration in rat gingival fibroblast progenitor cells in steady-state control and during sustained mechanical stimulation. Elastics (0.15 mm thick) were inserted between maxillary M1 and M2 of 8 wk-old male rats which were labelled with H3-TdR and killed in groups of 6-7 animals together with equal-sized groups of labelled control animals at intervals between 1-168 h. Autoradiographs of consecutive mesio-distal sections were used to determine grain counts for H3-TdR-labelled cells in the connective tissue of the gingival papilla between M2 and M3. Median cell cycle times (MCC) were estimated from plots of mean and median grain counts a…
The assessment of gingivitis using remote photoplethysmography
2020
Gum disease caused by bacterial infection, systemic conditions or neurogenic inflammation remains a prevalent and important concern of public health in both, developing and developed countries, potentially causing tooth loss if left untreated. Therefore, a simple, cost-effective, and contactless diagnostic tool is needed in dentistry. The present study aims to develop and investigate the feasibility of a motion artefact-free, miniature imaging photoplethysmography system which is dedicated for assessment of gingivitis in the dental office. The device comprised of a sub-miniature monochromatic camera equipped with miniature lens, 4-LED ring illuminator, cross polarizers and bandpass optical …
Effect of hemostatic agent on marginal gaps of class V giomer restorations
2017
Background Contamination of dentin with hemostatic agents might exert a deleterious effect on adhesive procedures on dentin. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of aluminum chloride hemostatic agent on marginal gaps in Cl V giomer restorations. Material and Methods Fifty sound bovine permanent incisors were selected for the purpose of this in vitro study and Cl V cavities were prepared on their buccal surfaces; the gingival margins of the cavities were placed in dentin. The tooth samples were randomly assigned to two groups (n=25). The samples in groups 1 and 2 underwent a restorative procedure without and with the application of aluminum chloride hemostatic agent in …

Volumetric variation of peri-implant soft tissues in convergent collar implants and crowns using the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOP…
2018
Background To evaluate the changes in the peri-implant soft tissues of convergent collar implants with biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) crowns, 10 months after loading. Material and Methods A pilot study was carried out from January 2016 to October 2017 involving 14 patients with one or two implants in the posterior mandibular sector. A total of 32 convergent collar implants were placed using a non-submerged protocol. Three months later the provisional cemented crowns were fitted using the BOPT approach with the finish line 1-1.5 mm below the gingival margin, simulating coronal emergence of a natural tooth. The soft tissue changes were measured with an intraoral scanner at…
In vitro and in vivo characterization of porcine acellular dermal matrix for gingival augmentation procedures
2013
Recently, porcine acellular dermal matrix (PADM) has been proposed as a possible alternative to autogenous grafts in periodontal plastic surgery. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro responses of four different oral cell lines cultured on a novel PADM. Furthermore, tissue reaction to PADM was evaluated histologically after subcutaneous implantation in mice.Human gingival fibroblasts (HGF), human osteoblast-like cells, human umbilical vein endothelial cells and human oral keratinocytes (HOK) were cultured and transferred on to the PADM. A tissue culture polystyrene surface served as the control. The viability of all tested cell lines on PADM was measured by using the …
Porphyromonas gingivalis, Periodontal and Systemic Implications: A Systematic Review
2019
In recent scientific literature, oral infections and systemic manifestations, or correlations between oral health and systemic diseases are a topic of discussion. Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the bacteria implicated in the biofilm formation of bacterial plaque, and plays an important role in the progression of periodontal disease. In this systematic review authors have evaluated the literature of the last 10 years on P. gingivalis and all the systemic implications proven. This study therefore evaluates all the districts of the organism in which this bacterium may have implications. From the results it emerges that P. gingivalis has implications in the onset of different systemic patho…
Comparison of diode laser – Oral tissue interaction to different wavelengths. In vitro study of porcine periodontal pockets and oral mucosa
2020
[Background] The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of diode lasers at different wavelengths and power settings in handmade incisions in periodontal pockets and in oral mucosa of porcine tissue considering thermal damage, necrosis and the affected area of the soft tissue.
Immunohistochemical expression and distribution of orexin, orphanin and leptin in the major salivary glands of some mammals
2012
Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess the involvement of apoptotic factors, cytokeratins and metalloproteinase- 9 in the histogenesis of both Epithelialized Gingival Lesions (EGL) and Periapical Lesions (PAL). 55 consecutive patients, 30 with PAL and 25 with EGL, were selected for the study after clinical and radiological examinations. The PAL patients had severe periapical lesions and tooth decay with exposure of the pulp chamber. All PAL and EGL biopsies were surgically extracted, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and processed for routine light microscopy. Ten biopsies of each category were processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC). Serial paraffin sections were stained by IHC with a…
