This chapter contributes to the ongoing discussion about rural belonging by considering the role of historical consciousness (Rüsen, 2004) in the process of belonging in a place. The chapter suggests that young people’s temporal orientation in relation to local culture and history plays a significant role in their commitment to rural communities. This chapter focuses on how the target group of the 1990s girl power phenomenon made meaning of girl power in the Finnish context. The chapter takes a retrospective look at the phenomenon through the lens of girl energy, a concept used for girl power in Finland. Through memory work, Aino Tormulainen, Heta Mulari and Myry Voipio analyze a sample of adult women’s experiences of being adolescents during the most intensive years of Finnish girl energy. The chapter focuses on three key themes through which the informants remembered the phenomenon: femininity, gender equality, and friendship.

Parental relationship and adolescents’ conceptions of their interaction with significant others

Three problems were investigated with a sample of 329 Estonian and 504 Finnish adolescents (aged 14 to 18 years) and their parents. In Estonia, the responses of parents were received from 85% of the families, and in Finland from 55%. Progress through the Early Stages of Assimilation in Play Therapy with a Traumatized Six-Year-Old Girl

We applied the assimilation of problematic experiences sequence (APES) to a six-year-old girl’s processing of traumatic experiences involving violence and death in play therapy. We analyzed the post-session notes from the first 34 sessions of a much longer treatment, during which the girl repeatedly enacted a drama we called the cottage play, involving characters assumed by the child and characters assigned to the therapist. Transient chylomicronemia preceding the onset of insulin-dependent diabetes in a young girl with no humoral markers of islet autoimmunity

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the possible causes of diabetes in a young child who presented with hyperglycemia associated with severe hypertriglyceridemia (>166 mmol/l), hypercholesterolemia (>38 mmol/l) and fasting chilomicrons. RESULTS: The patient did not have any of the HLA and autoantibody markers typically associated with type 1 diabetes. A glucose clamp failed to demonstrate insulin resistance (peripheral glucose utilization rate (M)=4.3 mg/kg per min) and there was no family history of type 2 diabetes or maturity onset diabetes in youth.
