Heating glaciers from below

2013

Climate change is affecting the cryosphere from above. Geothermal heat flux from below is also contributing to conditions at the base of Greenland's ice sheet, which sits atop a lithosphere of variable thickness.

The Genetic History of Northern Europe

2017

Recent ancient DNA studies have revealed that the genetic history of modern Europeans was shaped by a series of migration and admixture events between deeply diverged groups. While these events are well described in Central and Southern Europe, genetic evidence from Northern Europe surrounding the Baltic Sea is still sparse. Here we report genome-wide DNA data from 24 ancient North Europeans ranging from ~7,500 to 200 calBCE spanning the transition from a hunter-gatherer to an agricultural lifestyle, as well as the adoption of bronze metallurgy. We show that Scandinavia was settled after the retreat of the glacial ice sheets from a southern and a northern route, and that the first Scandinav…

ELF and migrant categorization at family clinics in Finland

2019

Artikkelin tavoite on selvittää, miten neuvolan terveydenhoitajat käyttävät puheessaan kieltä, erityisesti englannin kieltä, ei-suomea-puhuvien asiakkaidensa kategorisointiin. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään jäsenkategoria-analyysiä (Schegloff, Emanuel A. 2007. A tutorial on membership categorization. Journal of Pragmatics 39(3). 462–482) osoittamaan, miten englannin kielen osaaminen maahanmuuttostatuksen ja syntyperäisen englannin puhujan normin ohella näytti olevan määräävin tekijä siinä, miten terveydenhoitajat kategorisoivat siirtolaistaustaisia asiakkaitaan. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat kuinka vahvasti jäsenkategoriapohjainen luokittelu näkyy institutionaalisessa päätöksenteossa, ja ne koros…

Solving a large cutting problem in the glass manufacturing industry

2020

Abstract The glass cutting problem proposed by Saint Gobain for the 2018 ROADEF challenge includes some specific constraints that prevent the direct application of procedures developed for the standard cutting problem. On the one hand, the sheets to be cut have defects that make them unique and they must be used in a given order. On the other hand, pieces are grouped in stacks and the pieces in each stack must be cut in order. There are also some additional characteristics due to the technology being used, especially the requirement for a three-stage guillotine cutting process. Taking into account the sequencing constraints on sheets and pieces, we have developed a beam search algorithm, us…

University language policies : How does Finnish constitutional bilingualism meet the needs for internationalisation in English?

2018

In this article, we discuss the position of Finnish constitutional bilingualism in higher education in the context of internationalisation in English, by focusing on two universities: one dominantly monolingual (Finnish), one dominantly bilingual (Finnish–Swedish); in addition, both teach in English. This article investigates how discourses around language choices (language policy documents, selected staff and student interviews) construe these universities as monolingual, bilingual or trilingual, and what these discourses say about the universities as organisations themselves. Results suggest that, although lack of clarity remains regarding language choices in many practical situations, Fi…

Best performances by men and women open-water swimmers during the ‘English Channel Swim’ from 1900 to 2010

2012

Eichenberger, Evelyn | Knechtle, Beat | Knechtle, Patrizia | Ruest, Christoph Alexander | Rosemann, Thomas | Lepers, Romuald; International audience; ''Little research has examined ultra-endurance swimming performances. The 'English Channel Swim', where swimmers have to cover a distance of 32 km between England and France represents a unique long-distance, open-water, sea-swimming challenge, and each year swimmers from all over the world try to succeed in this challenge. The best times in minutes and the nationality of successful men and women swimmers were analysed from 1900 to 2010. A total of 1,533 swimmers (455 women and 1,078 men) from more than 40 countries have successfully completed…

Atlantin ylityksiä : amerikkalaisen kirjallisuuden- ja kulttuurintutkimuksen navigointia 1965-1995

2011

Teoriat muuttuvat paitsi aikaa myös paikkaa myöten. Kirjassa tutkitaan eurooppalaisen, varsinkin ranskalaisen teorian Atlantin ylityksiä. Millaisiksi eräät keskeiset teoriaotteet muotoutuivat yhdysvaltalaisessa yliopistomaailmassa ja kohdatessaan uudet poliittiset ja kulttuuriset haasteet? Tämän muotoutumisen vaikutukset näkyvät vuorostaan muualla. Ajanjakso on 1965–1995. "Korkean teorian" nousu liittyi kielelliseen käänteeseen ja perustojen horjumiseen, ja sen erilaisten muotojen ja myös vastustamisen tarkastelu ulottuu kielen merkityksiä hajottavasta retorisuudesta valtarakenteiden marxilaiseen analyysiin, afrikkalaisamerikkalaiseen feminismiin ja "orientalismin" symboliseen tuottamiseen …

Demogenomic modeling of the timing and the processes of early European farmers differentiation

2020

AbstractThe precise genetic origins of the first Neolithic farming populations, as well as the processes and the timing of their differentiation, remain largely unknown. Based on demogenomic modeling of high-quality ancient genomes, we show that the early farmers of Anatolia and Europe emerged from a multiphase mixing of a Near Eastern population with a strongly bottlenecked Western hunter-gatherer population after the Last Glacial Maximum. Moreover, the population branch leading to the first farmers of Europe and Anatolia is characterized by a 2,500-year period of extreme genetic drift during its westward range expansion. Based on these findings, we derive a spatially explicit model of the…

State-dependent foraging: lactating voles adjust their foraging behavior according to the presence of a potential nest predator and season

2015

Parental care often produces a trade-off between meeting nutritional demands of offspring and the duties of offspring protection, especially in altricial species. Parents have to leave their young unattended for foraging trips, during which nestlings are exposed to predators. We investigated how rodent mothers of altricial young respond to risk of nest predation in their foraging decisions. We studied foraging behavior of lactating bank voles (Myodes glareolus) exposed to a nest predator, the common shrew (Sorex araneus). We conducted the experiment in summer (high resource provisioning for both species) and autumn (less food available) in 12 replicates with fully crossed factors “shrew pre…
