Orientation dependence of high-order harmonic generation in molecules

2003

We present two- and three-dimensional model calculations of high-order harmonic generation in ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}^{+}.$ The harmonic spectra exhibit clear signatures of intramolecular interference. An interference minimum appears at a harmonic order that depends on the molecular orientation. Harmonic generation in three-center molecules is studied on the basis of two-dimensional calculations for a ${\mathrm{H}}_{3}^{2+}$ model system. From analytical considerations, the orientation dependence of the harmonic intensities in three-center molecules exhibits a double minimum due to intramolecular interference. In the numerical results, the double minimum is broadened into a single wide minimum. T…

Publisher Correction: Stabilizing spin spirals and isolated skyrmions at low magnetic field exploiting vanishing magnetic anisotropy

2018

Skyrmions are topologically protected non-collinear magnetic structures. Their stability is ideally suited to carry information in, e.g., racetrack memories. The success of such a memory critically depends on the ability to stabilize and manipulate skyrmions at low magnetic fields. The non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction originating from spin-orbit coupling drives skyrmion formation. It competes with Heisenberg exchange and magnetic anisotropy favoring collinear states. Isolated skyrmions in ultra-thin films so far required magnetic fields as high as several Tesla. Here, we show that isolated skyrmions in a monolayer of Co/Ru(0001) can be stabilized down to vanishing fields. Eve…

Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics

2019

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, pmiss, up to 220MeV/c, and Q2=0.65 (GeV/c)2. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. We find in this kinematic region that the measured polarization-transfer components Px and Pz and their ratio agree with the theoretical calculations, which use free-proton form factor…

Search for a Fermiophobic and Standard Model Higgs Boson in Diphoton Final States

2011

Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T01:13:49Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2011-10-05 National Science Foundation We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson and a fermiophobic Higgs boson in the diphoton final states based on 8.2fb-1 of pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96TeV collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. No excess of data above background predictions is observed and upper limits at the 95% C.L. on the cross section multiplied by the branching fraction are set which are the most restrictive to date. A fermiophobic Higgs boson with a mass below 112.9 GeV is excluded at the 95% C.L. © 2011 American Physical Society. Universidad de Bu…

Role of excitons in double Raman resonances in GaAs quantum wells

1996

Raman scattering by longitudinal-optical phonons has been measured in GaAs-AlAs multiple quantum wells at high magnetic fields. Doubly resonant scattering processes are observed at photon energies corresponding to magneto-excitons with different principal quantum numbers for the incoming and outgoing channels. The existence of these initially forbidden scattering processes, their resonance energies, and their relative intensities are correctly reproduced by our theoretical description. The model takes into account the excitonic nature of the intermediate states, as well as scattering processes involving a nonzero in-plane phonon wave vector, which is required to allow inter-Landau level sca…

Truncated thermalization of incoherent optical waves through supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers

2013

We revisit the process of optical wave thermalization through supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers. We report theoretically and numerically a phenomenon of `truncated thermalization': The incoherent optical wave exhibits an irreversible evolution toward a Rayleigh-Jeans thermodynamic equilibrium state characterized by a compactly supported spectral shape. The theory then reveals the existence of a frequency cut-off which regularizes the ultraviolet catastrophe inherent to ensembles of classical nonlinear waves. This phenomenon sheds new light on the mechanisms underlying the formation of bounded supercontinuum spectra in photonic crystal fibers.

Unified kinetic formulation of incoherent waves propagating in nonlinear media with noninstantaneous response

2010

This article presents a unified kinetic formulation of partially coherent nonlinear optical waves propagating in a noninstantaneous response Kerr medium. We derive a kinetic equation that combines the weak Langmuir turbulence kinetic equation and a Vlasov-like equation within a general framework: It describes the evolution of the spectrum of a random field that exhibits a quasistationary statistics in the presence of a noninstantaneous nonlinear response. The kinetic equation sheds new light on the dynamics of partially coherent nonlinear waves and allows for a qualitative interpretation of the interplay between the noninstantaneous nonlinearity and the nonstationary statistics of the incoh…

Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run

2013

This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Triggerrate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpaired, i.e. non-colliding, proton bunches is used to obtain background-enriched data samples. These are used to identify characteristic features of beam-induced backgrounds, which then are …
