Il ladino e i suoi idiomi

2020

Old English byrððīnenu: the Anglo-Saxon midwife

2018

Midwives were clearly viewed as professionalized figures in the Mediterranean world of antiquity and late antiquity and they were responsible for women’s healthcare, such as gynecological and obstetrical needs. They were referred to in Roman law, admonished in Christian edicts and memorialized in statues and inscriptions. Their status is attested to by medical texts specifically intended for midwives’ use dating from at least the third century B.C. to the sixth century A.D. According to Green, professional midwives disappeared along with the slow disintegration of the urban environments that supported medical specialization and reemerged as a specialized profession only in the thirteenth ce…

The ‘Unglossed’ Words of the Lindisfarne Glosses

2016

The Old English glosses to the Gospels in London, British Library, MS Cotton Nero D.iv represent one of the largest interlinear apparatuses to a single Latin text in the vernacular. However, about one thousand words of the Latin text are left unglossed both in the Gospels and the prefatory material. The largest number of omissions concern proper names (personal names, place-names and ethnonyms), but also words such as camelus or ventilabrum were left unglossed whether always or just sometimes. This paper investigates the number and the distribution of these unglossed terms as well as their nature.

Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: Open bite evolution after tongue reduction

2018

Background Macroglossia causes functional deficits such as airway obstruction, drooling, phonation difficulties, and leads to protrusion of dentoalveolar structures resulting in an anterior open bite and a prognathic mandibular appearance. Macroglossia is present in the majority of patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and surgical treatment may be indicated. Material and Methods A retrospective review was conducted including BWS patients who underwent surgical tongue reduction between 2000 and 2015 at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid. Results Out of 16 patients with BWS, surgery was performed in 11 cases. Tongue protrusion with open bite was the main indication for surgi…

Precious stones and ‘wondrous’ minerals in Old High German glosses

2018

This essay will focus on the names of precious stones and minerals which were known and praised for their extraordinary properties in Old High German glosses and glossaries. The research aims to shed light on the circulation of stone lore in medieval Germany, and the strategies employed by the glossators when approaching this peculiar lexical field. In a number of cases, the interpretamentum takes the form of an explanatory gloss, providing a short description of the stone, which can include details on its colour, shape and physical properties. The features of the glosses under examination will hopefully yield relevant data on the knowledge of the precious stones and their physical appearan…

Aspetti della variabilità in “Fiabe novelle e racconti popolari siciliani” .

2017

Glossing the Old Frisian Psalter: Pragmatics and Competence

2014

The essay takes into examination the interlinear glosses in Old Frisian in the fragment of Psalter in ms. Groningen, Universiteitsbibliotheek 404. This is the oldest medieval Frisian fragmentary codex to survive and contains verses of Psalms XVII, XXVII, and XVIII, accompanied by glosses in the vernacular. This essay is the first lengthy study specifically devoted to the typology of the glosses themselves and their peculiarities (within the field of interlinear glosses). On close inspection, the OF glosses show a large internal coherence and individual quality. As far as the lexicon is concerned, the glosses feature a series of words belonging to the juridical lexicon, whereas other word-ch…

The Names of the ‘Pearl’ in the Old High German Glosses and Glossaries

2019

The essay will provide a scrutiny of the words merigrioz and perala occurring in the Old High German glosses to render the Latin words for ‘pearl’, i.e. unio and margarita, with the purpose of mapping the distribution and the contexts of use of the OHG words. The analysis will contribute to trace the origin of the German word for ‘pearl’, starting from the earliest stage of the language and – from a perspective of language contact – which takes into account the Latin counterparts of these OHG glosses.

Preface

2018

The essays collected in these two volumes provide evidence of Patrizia Lendinara’s wide expertise and her impact in distinct academic fields, ranging from late antiquity to the early and late Middle Ages. The papers are offered as a tribute to Patrizia’s scholarship by colleagues from Italy and abroad, some of whom were once her students. The theme of this Festschrift was chosen in view of the honouree’s keen interest in and contribution to the study of the glosses and the lexicon of Germanic languages. Accordingly, although the essays collected in these volumes vary quite widely in both style and structure, they all ultimately focus on the various facets of glossography and lexicography of…
