Association between osteoarthritis and social isolation: data from the EPOSA study

2019

Objective: To determine whether there is an association between osteoarthritis (OA) and incident social isolation using data from the European Project on OSteoArthritis (EPOSA) study.Design: Prospective, observational study with 12 to 18 months of follow-up.Setting: Community dwelling.Participants: Older people living in six European countries.Measurements: Social isolation was assessed using the Lubben Social Network Scale and the Maastricht Social Participation Profile. Clinical OA of the hip, knee, and hand was assessed according to American College of Rheumatology criteria. Demographic characteristics, including age, sex, multijoint pain, and medical comorbidities, were assessed. Results…

Association between alcoholism and symptom expression, patient symptom goals, and clinical response in advanced cancer patients

2019

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of alcoholism on symptom expression, personalized symptom goal (PSG) and patient goal response (PGR), and patient global impression (PGI) in advanced cancer patients. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of an international multicenter study. Advanced cancer patients who had a history of alcohol dependence positive, according to CAGE (cut down, annoy, guilt, eye-opener), were selected. Thirty patients (3.45%) were CAGE-positive. This sample was matched with 30 patients with similar characteristics who were CAGE-negative. Patients rated symptom intensity by using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Score (ESAS) at admission (T0) and the…

Association between Obesity History and Hand Grip Strength in Older Adults-Exploring the Roles of Inflammation and Insulin Resistance as Mediating Fa…

2011

Background: To examine the association between obesity history and hand grip strength, and whether the association is partly explained by subclinical inflammation and insulin resistance. Methods:Data are from 2,021 men and women aged 55 years and older participating in the representative population-based Health 2000 Survey in Finland. Body mass and body height, maximal hand grip strength, C-reactive protein, and insulin resistance based on homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) were measured in a health examination. Recalled weight at 20, 30, 40, and 50 years of age were recorded to obtain a hierarchical classification of obesity history. Obesity was defined as body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2. R…

Global age-sex-specific fertility, mortality, healthy life expectancy (HALE), and population estimates in 204 countries and territories, 1950–2019: a…

2020

Background Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Methods 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Spatiotemporal Gaussian…

Genetic and Environmental Influences Underlying Externalizing Behaviors, Cigarette Smoking and Illicit Drug Use Across Adolescence

2012

We investigated genetic and environmental influences common to adolescent externalizing behavior (at age 12), smoking (at age 14) and initiation of drug use (at age 17) using the FinnTwin12 cohort data. Multivariate Cholesky models were fit to data from 737 monozygotic and 722 dizygotic twin pairs. Heritability of externalizing behavior was 56%, that of smoking initiation/amount 20/32%, and initiation of drug use 27%. In the best-fitting model common environmental influences explained most of the covariance between externalizing behavior and smoking initiation (69%) and amount (77%). Covariance between smoking initiation/amount and drug use was due to additive genetic (42/22%) and common en…

A stalactite record of four relative sea-level highstands during the Middle Pleistocene Transition

2017

International audience; Ice-sheet and sea-level fluctuations during the Early and Middle Pleistocene are as yet poorly understood. A stalactite from a karst cave in North West Sicily (Italy) provides the first evidence of four marine inundations that correspond to relative sea-level highstands at the time of the Middle Pleistocene Transition. The speleothem is located ∼97 m above mean sea level as result of Quaternary uplift. Its section reveals three marine hiatuses and a coral overgrowth that fixes the age of final marine ingression at 1.124 ± 0.2, thus making this speleothem the oldest stalactite with marine hiatuses ever studied to date. Scleractinian coral species witness light-limited…

The impact of digitalization on marketing communications measurement process : case of global B2B industrial companies

2011

The stature of marketing communications function is under a threat within the firms. As the board of management tends to demand the profitability of all business activities, marketing practitioners have for a long time been unable to credibly show the link between marketing communications actions and financial value. Fortunately, the digitalization has offered new insights and opportunities to make the marketing communications actions more measureable. “Everything can be tracked” is an often heard slogan when speaking of monitoring web users’ online behavior facilitated by web analytics software. However, it is questionable how well this slogan fits the marketing communications of Business-…

Assessment of age-related skin changes using hyperspectral polarization imaging

2019

Abstract We report a development of hyperspectral polarization imaging approach for assessment of age-related skin changes. The degree of residual polarization is used as a quantitative marker of the age-related pathological malformations. The developed approach in frame of express analysis of the degree of residual polarization in each pixel of the image are shown.

Combined multi-wavelength laser speckle contrast imaging and diffuse reflectance imaging for skin perfusion assessment

2019

Abstract Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) is a powerful low-cost method for visualization of flow, microcirculation and blood perfusion. Due to the fact that diseased and healthy tissues has different blood perfusion, LSCI can be a perspective tool for cancer diagnostics and discrimination between different types of tissues. Previously, multispectral diffuse reflectance imaging method for melanoma diagnostics has been introduced. In this work, multi-wavelength (532-, 655- and 850- nm) LSCI technique combined with hyperspectral camera and diffuse reflectance imaging method will be used for assessment of tissues with different skin perfusion properties. An in vivo experiment with occlusi…
