A Nonlinear Primal-Dual Method for Total Variation-Based Image Restoration

1999

We present a new method for solving total variation (TV) minimization problems in image restoration. The main idea is to remove some of the singularity caused by the nondifferentiability of the quantity $|\nabla u|$ in the definition of the TV-norm before we apply a linearization technique such as Newton's method. This is accomplished by introducing an additional variable for the flux quantity appearing in the gradient of the objective function, which can be interpreted as the normal vector to the level sets of the image u. Our method can be viewed as a primal-dual method as proposed by Conn and Overton [ A Primal-Dual Interior Point Method for Minimizing a Sum of Euclidean Norms, preprint,…

Thermoelectric effects on electrically conducting particles in liquid metal

2015

International audience; The present paper deals with the thermoelectric effect on a solid electrically conducting particle immersed in a liquid metal under a temperature gradient. Superimposition of a static magnetic field induces thermoelectric magnetic (TEM) forces both in the solid and in the liquid. Considering a simple spherical particle, the electric current density and the corresponding forces can be calculated analytically. Two cases are considered according to the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the temperature gradient. The corresponding flow fields around the particle are calculated in both cases. Grain motion is analyzed in the light of in-situ experiments perf…

Method to find the Minimum 1D Linear Gradient Model for Seismic Tomography

2016

The changes in the state of a geophysical medium before a strong earthquake can be found by studying of 3D seismic velocity images constructed for consecutive time windows. A preliminary step is to see changes with time in a minimum 1D model. In this paper we develop a method that finds the parameters of the minimum linear gradient model by applying a two-dimensional Taylor series of the observed data for the seismic ray and by performing least-square minimization for all seismic rays. This allows us to obtain the mean value of the discrete observed variable, close to zero value.

Centrifugation does not alter spatial distribution of `BEP4' mRNA in paracentrotus lividus EGG

1997

AbstractParacentrotus lividus unfertilized eggs were centrifuged in a sucrose gradient, so to split each into two parts: a nucleated light fragment and an anucleated heavy fragment. Northern blot analyses utilizing a bep4 probe as animal marker and H2A histone gene and 12S-mit RNA as controls indicate that the eggs are elongated along the animal-vegetal axis during centrifugation and thereafter split into an animal and a vegetal half. Treatment of the eggs with colchicine before centrifugation abolishes the animal localization of bep4 mRNA.

Dynamic19F-MRI of pulmonary ventilation using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas

2001

A new method for dynamic imaging of pulmonary wash-in and wash-out kinetics of inhaled sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas was developed. Measurements at the fluorine-19 Larmor frequency were performed in pigs using a gradient echo pulse sequence with 0.5 ms echo time and a measurement time of 9.1 s per image. Dynamic MRI was performed during wash-in and wash-out of SF6 gas in mechanically ventilated porcine lungs. A postprocessing strategy was developed for quantitative determination of wash-out time constants in the presence of noise. Mean wash-out constants were 4.78 ± 0.48 breaths vs. 4.33 ± 0.76 breaths for left and right lung when ventilation was performed with low tidal volume, and 1.73 ± …

Highly protective alkalinization by ammonia vapor diffusion in viscosimetric DNA damage assessment.

1988

A method for the measurement of viscosities correlated to DNA alterations in alkaline homogenate suspensions is described. The alkaline pH shift to afford cell lysis, DNA unfolding, and denaturation is attained by gaseous ammonia diffusion, thus avoiding shear stress from mechanical mixing. At the same time a stabilizing density gradient is established. This solution is run through a plastic measuring tube that is wide enough to minimize the influence of uneven swelling of the lysing DNA-containing components. Flow times under a carefully controlled water head are registered, and their ratios to control solutions are evaluated. The relative viscosities show a strong and irreversible depende…

Optimal measurement setup for damage detection in piezoelectric plates

2009

[EN] An optimization of the excitation-measurement configuration is proposed for the characterization of damage in PZT-4 piezoelectric plates, from a numerical point of view. To perform such an optimization, a numerical method to determine the location and extent of defects in piezoelectric plates is developed by combining the solution of an identification inverse problem, using genetic algorithms and gradient-based methods to minimize a cost functional, and using an optimized finite element code and meshing algorithm. In addition, a semianalytical estimate of the probability of detection is developed and validated, which provides a flexible criterion to optimize the experimental design. Th…

Multiple actions of fenamates and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on GABAA receptors

2019

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) niflumic acid, a fenamate in structure, has many molecular targets, one of them being specific subtypes of the main inhibitory ligand-gated anion channel, the GABA(A) receptor. Here, we report on the effects of other fenamates and other classes of NSAIDs on brain picrotoxinin-sensitive GABA A receptors, using an autoradiographic assay with [S-35]TBPS as a ligand on mouse brain sections. We found that the other fenamates studied (flufenamic acid, meclofenamic acid, mefenamic acid and tolfenamic acid) affected the autoradiographic signal at low micromolar concentrations in a facilitatory-like allosteric fashion, i.e., without having affinity to …

A phosphorylation cycle shapes gradients of the DYRK family kinase Pom1 at the plasma membrane.

2011

http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/; International audience; Concentration gradients regulate many cell biological and developmental processes. In rod-shaped fission yeast cells, polar cortical gradients of the DYRK family kinase Pom1 couple cell length with mitotic commitment by inhibiting a mitotic inducer positioned at midcell. However, how Pom1 gradients are established is unknown. Here, we show that Tea4, which is normally deposited at cell tips by microtubules, is both necessary and, upon ectopic cortical localization, sufficient to recruit Pom1 to the cell cortex. Pom1 then moves laterally at the plasma membrane, which it binds through a basic region exhibiting direct lipid interaction. …

Imprints of latitude, host taxon, and decay stage on fungus-associated arthropod communities

2022

Interactions among fungi and insects involve hundreds of thousands of species. While insect communities on plants have formed some of the classic model systems in ecology, fungus-based communities and the forces structuring them remain poorly studied by comparison. We characterize the arthropod communities associated with fruiting bodies of eight mycorrhizal basidiomycete fungus species from three different orders along a 1200-km latitudinal gradient in northern Europe. We hypothesized that, matching the pattern seen for most insect taxa on plants, we would observe a general decrease in fungal-associated species with latitude. Against this backdrop, we expected local communities to be struc…
