Glioma Grading: The Role of Combined Perfusion MR Imaging and Single-Voxel MR Spectroscopy Compared to Conventional MR Imaging
2011
Abstract Body: Purpose To assess the contribution of combined perfusion MR imaging (MRI) and single-voxel MR spectroscopy (MRS) in grading primary gliomas compared with conventional MRI. Materials & Methods Thirty-two patients with primary cerebral glioma underwent conventional MRI, dynamic contrast-enhanced T2*-weighted perfusion MRI and single-voxel proton MRS. Gliomas were graded as low or high based on conventional MRI. The rCBV measurements were obtained from regions of maximum perfusion normalized between tumor and healthy tissue. Metabolite ratios ( [Cho]/[Cr], [Cho]/[NAA], [NAA]/[Cr]) were measured with TE: 34 ms. Tumor grade determined with the three methods then was compared with …
Nessuna speranza senza collaborazione per i condannati all’ergastolo ostativo? Un primo commento a Viola c. Italia (n. 2)
2019
The paper deals with a recent judgment delivered by the European Court of Human Rights dealing with the compatibility of the Italian "ergastolo ostativo" (life imprisonment without parole) with Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
A New Technique for Implementing ECtHR Judgments: Will It Work? The Corte Costituzionale “Urges” the Houses to Reform the Ergastolo Ostativo
2021
In this much-awaited ruling (Order No. 97 of 15 April 2021), the Corte Costituzionale had to decide on the constitutionality of the existing prohibition on release on parole for life prisoners convicted for Mafia-related crimes, in the absence of any cooperation with justice (ergastolo ostativo). This form of life imprisonment without prospect of release had already been deemed in contrast with Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights (echr) in the judgment rendered by the Strasbourg Court in Viola v. Italy (No. 2): on that occasion, the ECtHR invoked a legislative reform of the ergastolo ostativo. In the order at hand, the Corte Costituzionale, instead of formally declaring the…
Blue biotechnology: oil bioremediation using hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria immobilized on biodegradable membranes
2017
A novel bioremediation system to clean up oil contaminated water was developed combining hydrocarbon (HC) degrading bacteria immobilized and polylactic acid (PLA) or polycaprolactone (PCL) membranes prepared by electrospinning. The bioremediation efficiency was tested on crude oil using highly performant HC degrading bacterial strains isolated from marine and soil environments. The membrane morphology, the microbial adhesion and proliferation were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM analysis highlighted that the fibers of the electrospun mats were in nanoscale with a similar diameter size distribution. The electrospun membranes exhibited high oil absorption capacity …

2021
Abstract Objective To provide national guidelines for the management of women with severe pre-eclampsia. Design A consensus committee of 26 experts was formed. A formal conflict-of-interest (COI) policy was developed at the onset of the process and enforced throughout. The entire guidelines process was conducted independently of any industrial funding. The authors were advised to follow the principles of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE(r)) system to guide assessment of quality of evidence. The potential drawbacks of making strong recommendations in the presence of low-quality evidence were emphasised. Methods The last SFAR and CNGOF guidelines on…
Endoscopic and surgical resection of T1a/T1b esophageal neoplasms: A systematic review
2013
AIM: To investigate potential therapeutic recommendations for endoscopic and surgical resection of T1a/T1b esophageal neoplasms. METHODS: A thorough search of electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, Pubmed and Cochrane Library, from 1997 up to January 2011 was performed. An analysis was carried out, pooling the effects of outcomes of 4241 patients enrolled in 80 retrospective studies. For comparisons across studies, each reporting on only one endoscopic method, we used a random effects meta-regression of the log-odds of the outcome of treatment in each study. “Neural networks” as a data mining technique was employed in order to establish a prediction model of lymph node status in superficial …
A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing surgical and oncological outcomes of upper rectal, rectosigmoid and sigmoid tumours.
2021
Abstract Aim Management paradigms for tumours from the sigmoid colon to the lower rectum vary significantly. The upper rectum (UR) represents the transition point both anatomically and in treatment protocols. Above the UR is clearly defined and managed as colon cancer and below is managed as rectal cancer. This study compares outcomes between sigmoid, rectosigmoid and UR tumours to establish if differences exist in operative and oncological outcomes. Methods Electronic databases were searched for published studies with comparative data on peri-operative and oncological outcome for upper rectal and sigmoid/rectosigmoid (SRS) tumours treated without neoadjuvant radiation. The search adhered t…
Non-invasive diagnosis and grading of postsurgical endoscopic recurrence in Crohn's disease
2010
Abstract Non-invasive techniques aim to be an alternative to endoscopy in the assessment of postsurgical recurrence of Crohn's disease (CD). The object of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography (AUS) and 99m Tc-hexamethylpropylene amineoxime ( 99m Tc-HMPAO)-labelled leucocyte scintigraphy (LLS) compared with endoscopy in the diagnosis and grading of postsurgical recurrence of CD. Between January 2006 and May 2007, all patients with CD and resection with ileocolic anastomosis were included prospectively. Within three days they underwent an ileocolonoscopy, AUS with evaluation of bowel wall thickness and the presence of Doppler flow, and LLS. Forty patients who m…
Prognostic Parameters in Renal Cell Carcinoma - a New Approach(1)
1989
The prognostic potential of the parameters TNM staging, Robson staging, grading, cell type, growth pattern, and patient age was investigated for 431 patients with operated renal cell carcinoma (RCC). In the individual analyses, staging and grading attained the best results, whereby Robson staging proved to be superior to TNM staging by comparison. Morphological parameters had a more modest effect on the prognosis, but this should not be underestimated. A scale of points based on a comparative biometric evaluation of the various parameters was devised. From this scale, three significantly distinct prognostic groups evolved with a correct prognosis of over 80% on the average for an individual…
Use of opioid analgesics in the treatment of cancer pain: evidence-based recommendations from the EAPC
2012
Here we provide the updated version of the guidelines of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) on the use of opioids for the treatment of cancer pain. The update was undertaken by the European Palliative Care Research Collaborative. Previous EAPC guidelines were reviewed and compared with other currently available guidelines, and consensus recommendations were created by formal international expert panel. The content of the guidelines was defined according to several topics, each of which was assigned to collaborators who developed systematic literature reviews with a common methodology. The recommendations were developed by a writing committee that combined the evidence deriv…
