Edge-stress -induced spontaneous twisting of graphene nanoribbons
2012
We present a continuum model for spontaneous twisting of graphene nanoribbons driven by compressive edge stresses. Based on a geometrically nonlinear theory of plates, we identify scaling laws for the dependence of twist angles on ribbon width. Strikingly, we find the existence of a critical width below which a ribbon will not undergo spontaneous twisting, preferring an in-plane stretching mode instead. The model predictions are shown to be in excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with density-functional tight-binding simulations. More generally, our model provides a unifying picture of twisting in graphene nanoribbons with different edge orientations and chemical functionalizati…
Non-linear interactions of femtosecond laser pulses with graphene : photo-oxidation, imaging and photodynamics
2017
This thesis presents a study focused on interactions of femtosecond laser pulses with graphene, a one atom thick carbon membrane. Graphene, which exhibits exceptional electronic and optoelectronic properties, could provide considerable advantage over current silicon-based electronics. Graphene alone, being semi-metal, is not sufficient for electronic applications, but requires modification. For this, a set of methods for modifying and measuring the properties of graphene was developed. With the perspective of making graphene a suitable component for electronics, optoelectronics or photonics, ultrashort laser pulses were used for drawing patterns on graphene. The procedure modifies graphene …
Electrical measurements of femtosecond laser treated graphene
2017
Topological properties of mono- and multilayer graphene, flat bands and surface superconductivity
2015
Tutustun Pro Gradu -työssäni topologisiin materiaaleihin ja perehdyn grafeenin sekä romboedrisen grafiitin ominaisuuksiin tästä näkökulmasta. Erityisesti tutkin grafeenin alihilasymmetrian rikkoutumisen vaikutuksia grafiitissa lisäämällä heilahtelevan potentiaalin α grafeenin tight-binding -malliin.
Graphene films for gas sensing applications
2013
Gas detection at small concentrations is usually done using transition metal oxides. These semiconductors are, however, strongly dependent on parameters and conditions of growth and processing. Graphene attracts a big interest in science and technology due to its exceptional electric properties, and this truly 2-dimensional material has a great promise to be used as highly sensitive gas sensor. In this thesis, CVD and epitaxial graphene samples have been investigated in order to improve their sensitivity in gas sensing applications. The response of the sensor to different concentrations of detected gas was observed as a relative change of resistance of the sample. The aim of this study was …
Diversity at the nanoscale : laser-oxidation of single-layer graphene affects Fmoc-phenylalanine surface-mediated self-assembly
2023
We report the effects of a laser-oxidized single layer graphene (SLG) surface on the self-assembly of amphiphilic gelator N-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl-L-phenylalanine (Fmoc-Phe) towards an gel–SLG interface. Laser oxidation modulates the levels of hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity on the SLG surface. Atomic force, scanning electron, helium ion and scattering scanning nearfield optical microscopies (AFM, SEM, HIM, s-SNOM) were employed to assess the effects of surface properties on the secondary and tertiary organization of the formed Fmoc-Phe fibres at the SLG–gel interface. S-SNOM shows sheet-like secondary structures on both hydrophobic/hydrophilic areas of SLG and helical or disordered structu…
Suspended graphene device fabrication
2016
Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman aiheena oli tutkia itsekantavien grafeeninäytteiden valmistusta. Grafeeni syntetisoitiin kaasufaasikasvatuksella ilmakehän paineessa kupariohutkalvoille. Kupariohutkalvot valmistattiin käyttämällä elektronisuihkuhöyrystystä. Projektin aikana synteesiprosessia parannettiin optimoimalla synteesiparametreja.
Reduction-oxidation dynamics of oxidized graphene: Functional group composition dependent path to reduction
2018
Micrometer-sized oxidation patterns containing varying composition of functional groups including epoxy, ether, hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl, were created in chemical vapor deposition grown graphene through scanning probe lithography and pulsed laser two-photon oxidation. The oxidized graphene films were then reduced by a focused x-ray beam. Through in-situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement, we found that the path to complete reduction depends critically on the total oxygen coverage and concentration of epoxy and ether groups. Over the threshold concentrations, a complex reduction-oxidation process involving conversion of functional groups of lower binding energy to higher bindin…
Revealing lattice disorder, oxygen incorporation and pore formation in laser induced two-photon oxidized graphene
2019
Abstract Laser induced two-photon oxidation has proven to be a reliable method to pattern and control the level of oxidation of single layer graphene, which in turn allows the development of graphene-based electronic and optoelectronic devices with an all-optical method. Here we provide a full structural and chemical description of modifications of air-suspended graphene during the oxidation process. By using different laser irradiation doses, we were able to show via transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, electron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy how graphene develops from its pristine form up to a completely oxidized, porous and amorphous carbon layer. Furt…
