Abstract Objective Use of autologous veins as peripheral bypass graft may become critical in the presence of significant varicose degeneration of the harvested vein. Xenotransplantation of parathyroids in rats using barium-alginate and polyacrylic acid multilayer microcapsules

The integrity and function of encapsulated parathyroid tissue following xenotransplantation is limited by oxygen and nutrition supply and capsule fibrosis. Since some of these factors depend on stability and biocompatibility of the coating material, multilayer microcapsules have been developed. Parathyroid tissue pieces and digested single cells from pigs were encapsulated in barium-alginate and in polyacrylic acid (PAA) multilayer capsules. Investigating the use of primary adult subventricular zone neural precursor cells for neuronal replacement therapies

With the relatively recent discovery that neurogenesis persists throughout life in restricted regions of the adult mammalian brain, including those of human beings, there has been great interest in the use of adult-derived neural stem cells for neuronal replacement. There are many great hurdles that must be overcome in order for such replacement strategies to succeed. In this review, we outline some of these hurdles and discuss recent experiments that investigate the potential of using neural precursor cells found in the subventricular zone of the adult brain for brain repair.

Background We evaluated an intensified chemotherapy strategy in children with Wilms tumor who relapsed with high-risk features. Procedures From January 2001 to June 2006, we treated 20 consecutive children with reinduction chemotherapy (using ifosfamide/carboplatin/etoposide in 15/20 cases), with (n = 15) or without (n = 5) subsequent high-dose chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell support, surgery where feasible, and radiation therapy.
