Sporotrichoid Cases of Mycobacterium Marinum Skin Infection.

2010

Mycobacterium marinum belongs to the slow growth photochromogenous mycobacteria group. It is pathogenic for fish and human beings in which it can cause cutaneous nodular and ulcerative lesions, sometimes with sporotrichoid arrangement. We report three cases of sporotrichoid Mycobacterium marinum infections successfully treated with prolonged antibiotic therapy. Tropical fish aquaria and, more in general, the water environment were identified as the source of infection.

Cinnamon products as a possible etiologic factor in orofacial granulomatosis

2007

Objectives: It has been reported that clinical changes due to hypersensitivity reactions to various foods, preservatives, and oral hygiene products may be consistent with the characteristic signs of orofacial granulomatosis (OFG). The objective of this study was to examine 37 well-documented cases of cinnamon-induced contact stomatitis for clinical and histological features consistent with a diagnosis of OFG. Study design: We reviewed the records of the 37 cases to screen them for the clinical and histopathologic features of OFG. Results: Twelve patients showed clinical characteristics of OFG. The most commonly affected site was the gingiva. Focal non-caseating, epitheloid granulomas were o…

Racial disparity and prognosis in patients with mouth and oropharynx cancer in Brazil.

2022

Oral and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Populations in situations of social vulnerability tend to have higher incidences of cancer, a higher proportion of late diagnosis, greater difficulties in accessing health services, and, consequently, worse prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between race/skin color and OPC prognosis in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study using OPC data from the National Cancer Institute between the years 2000 and 2019. The selected variables were: gender, race/skin color, age, education, smoking and alcohol consumption, stage of the disease and disease status at …

Recurrent central giant cell granuloma in the mandible: surgical treatment and dental implant restoration.

2007

Central giant cell granuloma is an uncommon benign intraosseus lesion of jaws. Traditional treatment has been local curettage, although aggressive sub-types have a high tendency to recur. This patient report describes a recurrent central giant cell granuloma involving the body of the mandible in a 48-year-old-woman. Initial treatment of lesion consisted of curettage and peripheral ostectomy. When recurrence was detected one year later, an en bloc resection and defect regeneration with a composite bone graft of autogenous bone, xenograft, and autologous platelet-rich plasma was carried out. Adequate new bone formation was observed during follow-up of 24 months. Two dental implants were place…

Histopathologic analysis of gingival lesions : a 20-year retrospective study at one academic dental center

2018

Background The gingiva is part of the periodontium supporting structures surrounding the teeth and commonly involved in gingival and periodontal conditions. Assessing the distribution of gingival lesions is important for evaluating the prevalence of periodontal disease in the population to optimize the oral health care services. The purpose of this study is to report the frequency and distribution of gingival lesions biopsied from 1996-2016. Material and methods This cross-sectional retrospective study retrieved data from all gingival lesions biopsied from 1996-2016 and sent to the King Abdulaziz University Dental Hospital oral pathology laboratory. Histologic sections were reviewed in a bl…

Enhanced Permeability and Retention-like Extravasation of Nanoparticles from the Vasculature into Tuberculosis Granulomas in Zebrafish and Mouse Mode…

2018

The enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect is the only described mechanism enabling nanoparticles (NPs) flowing in blood to reach tumors by a passive targeting mechanism. Here, using the transparent zebrafish model infected with Mycobacterium marinum we show that an EPR-like process also occurs allowing different types of NPs to extravasate from the vasculature to reach granulomas that assemble during tuberculosis (TB) infection. PEGylated liposomes and other NP types cross endothelial barriers near infection sites within minutes after injection and accumulate close to granulomas. Although similar to 100 and 190 nm NPs concentrated most in granulomas, even similar to 700 nm liposo…

Reparative giant cell granuloma in a pediatric patient

2007

Reparative giant cell granulomas are benign, infrequent tumors, of non-odontogenic origin, that develop at central or peripheral level. Peripherally located lesions are frequently denominated ‘giant cell epulis’, and never correspond to true neoplasia, but rather to inflammatory reactions secondary to another lesion (hemorrhage, etc.). It should be taken into account, that in general, head and neck tumors of infancy usually demonstrate an atypical biological behaviour. Furthermore, the anatomicopathologic diagnosis is often compromised in this type of lesion. We present the case of a 6-year-old boy, who, three weeks after suffering a slight facial trauma, developed a painless, exophytic swe…

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma. Differential diagnosis, treatment and systemic involvement. Case report

2014

Abstract Case report A 48-year-old male was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of eyelid edema with bilateral yellowish ulcerated nodules. Suspecting a xanthogranulomatosis, imaging tests and biopsy were performed with diagnosis of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma. IgG monoclonal gammapathy was diagnosed in a systemic study. Systemic corticosteroids and cyclosporine were initiated unsuccessfully; therefore, intra-lesional injections of triamcinolone were started, which controlled the orbital disease. Discussion Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma is a rare condition that usually affects the eyelids and anterior orbit. Its diagnosis is important as it is associated with malignant lymphoproli…
